Awareness of Breast Cancer Warning Signs and Screening Methods among Female Residents of Pokhara Valley, Nepal

  • Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and by far the most frequent cancer among women. Objective: The present study was undertaken to assess the awareness of breast cancer warning signs and screening methods among the women of Pokhara valley, Nepal. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was carried out in a community setting with the female population. The questionnaire was administered in face-to-face interviews by trained research assistants. Results: Nepalese women demonstrated poor awareness of warning signs like a breast lump, lump under the armpit, bleeding or discharge from the nipple, pulling of the nipple, changes in the position of the nipple, nipple rash, redness of the breast skin, changes in the size of the breast or nipple, changes in the shape of the breast or nipple, pain in the breast or armpit, and dimpling of the breast skin. While 100% of nurses were aware about breast self-examination(BSE), mammography and warning signs of breast cancer. Levels of knowledge were significantly poorer in women with other occupations. Graduates were more aware about BSE, mammogram and warning signs of breast cancer compared to those with other educational levels. Conclusions: The findings indicated that the level of awareness of breast cancer, including knowledge of warning signs and BSE, is sub-optimal among Nepalese women.

  • VMS(Variable Message Signs)는 도로를 주행하는 불특정 다수의 운전자에게 실시간으로 교통정보를 제공하는 대표적인 수단으로써 널리 보급되어 있다. VMS를 통해 제공되는 메시지는 운전자에게 교통운영 및 교통제어의 기능을 수행하며, 경고정보 메시지는 교통사고와 직접적으로 관련된 개별차량의 속도와 운전자의 주행경로 선정에 많은 영향을 미친다. 그러나 VMS를 통한 정보제공 방안 중 교통사고 예방을 위한 경고정보 메시지 설계에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 경고정보 메시지를 효과적으로 전달 할 수 있는 메시지 설계 방안을 도출하기 위하여 특정지점에 이동하여 설치 운영할 수 있는 PVMS(Portable Variable Message Signs)를 이용한 실험 및 분석을 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 실험을 1 2차로 구분하여 실시하였다. 1차실험은 TEXT 표출방법, '픽토그램 또는 기호' 표출 방법, TEXT와 '픽토그램 또는 기호'의 조합을 통한 표출방법으로 구분하여 이용자 선호도를 조사하였다. 또한, 2차 실험은 1차 실험(이용자 선호도 조사)의 결과를 조합하여 PVMS 메시지를 설계 후 실제 주행환경에 적용하여 1차 실험 결과의 현장 적용 타당성을 평가하였다. 본 연구 결과는 정보 설계를 위한 기초자료로서 유용하게 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

급성기 뇌경색 환자의 전조증상 유무에 따른 특성 비교 (Investigation on Warning Signs of the patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke)

  • Objective : This study was aimed to investigated the warning signs and its relationship with the other characteristics in acute stroke patients. Methods : Three-hundred sixty three acute stroke patients were recuited in the oriental medical hospitals of 3 universities located in metropolitan region from October in 2005 to October in 2006. We evaluated their stroke type with brain MRI, their waring signs, and general characteristics such as age, sex, past history, risk factor, etc. Result : Of the 363 patient, 138(38%) patients were experience of warning signs. The frequency of Stress were found more in experience of warning signs than none of them. Warning signs were more common in Large Artery Atherosclerosis than in the other etiology. Conclusion : Although a concrete conclusion can hardly be drawn from this study, it reminds physicians of the importance of warning signs which their patients appeal. For the further investigation, it seems to be necessary to construct fundamental databases for stroke by increasing the number of patients and by examination into the etiology and location.

주행시뮬레이션을 이용한 고속도로 공사장 주의구간 교통안전표지 설치 방안 연구 (A Study on the Safety Countermeasures in Advanced Warning Area by Analyzing Driving Simulation in Work Zone)

  • 고속도로 공사장 교통관리구간 중 주의구간은 공사구간으로 진입하는 차량이 차로 변경을 수행해야 하는 구간으로 감속과 함께 안전한 차로변경이 가능하도록 교통안전표지가 설치되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 주행시뮬레이션 분석을 통해 주의구간 내 운전자의 반응특성으로 고려한 교통안전표지 설치의 적정성을 평가하였다. 교통안전표지 위치 변경 및 제거를 통해 시나리오를 구성하고, 시나리오 별 교통안전표지의 설치 위치 적정성을 제한속도 순응률과 차로변경 안전도를 통해 비교 평가하였다. 분석 결과 제한속도 규제표지를 주의구간 상류부에 설치하여 공사구간 진입차량의 속도를 미리 감소키시고, 차로변경 주의표지를 주의구간 하류부에 설치하여 차로 변경을 최종적으로 유도하는 것이 운전자의 인지도 및 순응도 향상에 있어서 가장 효과적인 대안인 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 고속도로 공사장에서 발생하는 교통사고 예방을 위해 교통관리기준의 개정 시 유용하게 사용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

스테레오 비전 기술을 이용한 도로 표지판의 3차원 추적 (Three Dimensional Tracking of Road Signs based on Stereo Vision Technique)

  • Road signs provide important safety information about road and traffic conditions to drivers. Road signs include not only common traffic signs but also warning information regarding unexpected obstacles and road constructions. Therefore, accurate detection and identification of road signs is one of the most important research topics related to safe driving. In this paper, we propose a 3-D vision technique to automatically detect and track road signs in a video sequence which is acquired from a stereo vision camera mounted on a vehicle. First, color information is used to initially detect the sign candidates. Second, the SVM (Support Vector Machine) is employed to determine true signs from the candidates. Once a road sign is detected in a video frame, it is continuously tracked from the next frame until it is disappeared. The 2-D position of a detected sign in the next frame is predicted by the 3-D motion of the vehicle. Here, the 3-D vehicle motion is acquired by using the 3-D pose information of the detected sign. Finally, the predicted 2-D position is corrected by template-matching of the scaled template of the detected sign within a window area around the predicted position. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect and track many types of road signs successfully. Tracking comparisons with two different methods are shown.

AHP기반 다기준 가치함수를 이용한 교통안전 경고정보 메시지 선정기법 (Methodology for Selecting Traffic Safety Warning Messages using Analytical Hierarchical Process(AHP)-based Multi-Criteria Value Function)

  • 본 연구에서는 연속류 도로상에서 교통사고 발생가능성이 높은 교통상황 시 제공할 수 있는 경고정보 메시지를 제작하고, 다목적 의사결정방법을 통하여 최적 경고정보메시지를 선택하는 방법을 제시하였다. 최적 경고정보 메시지 선택을 위해 11가지의 시나리오를 메시지 구성요소에 따라 3가지 방식(텍스트 / 텍스트+픽토그램 / 픽토그램)을 적용하여 총 33개의 경고정보 메시지를 제작하였다. 운전자의 안전운전을 효과적으로 유도하기 위한 메시지의 평가를 위해 인지도, 선호도 및 판독시간의 세 가지 항목을 제시하였다. 평가항목을 측정하기 위해 중부내륙고속도로에 있는 시험도로에서 PVMS(Portable Variable Message Sign)를 이용하여 각 메시지에 대한 현장실험을 수행하였다. 체계적인 평가를 위해 세 가지 평가항목을 고려한 다기준 가치함수를 정립하였다. AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process)기법을 이용하여 전문가 의사를 반영한 각 항목의 가중치를 산출하고 평가항목을 결합하여 가치함수를 완성하였다. 이를 이용하여 제작된 메시지의 가치를 평가하고 우선순위를 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 방법론은 다양한 목적을 고려한 의사결정을 효과적으로 수행하는데 활용될 수 있다. 특히 교통안전 및 소통상황에 대한 실시간 교통정보 메시지 설계 시 유용한 도구가 될 것으로 기대된다.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to investigated the relationship between warning signs and stroke subtype in acute stroke patients. Methods : From Oct. in 2005 to Oct. in 2006, 409 acute stroke patients were included. Patients were hospitalized within 14 days after the onset of stroke in DongGuk University International Hospital, Kyungwon University In-cheon Oriental Medical Hospital, Department Cardiovascular and Neurologic Diseases(Stroke center) Kyung Hee University Oriental hospital. We investigated general characteristics, stroke subtype, and warning signs(facial spasm, neck stiffness). Results : Hemorrhagic stroke had more facial spasm than ischemic stroke. (odds ratio 3.60) Small vessel occlusion had more neck stiffness than others. (odds ratio 2.03) Conclusion : To acquire more concrete conclusions on warning signs, we need further and large scale of prospective researches.

A Study on Process Safety Incident Precursors to Prevent Major Process Safety Incidents in the Yeosu Chemical Complex

  • Process safety incidents and loss events can be prevented if we identify and adequately take measures on process safety incident precursors in a timely manner. If we look into and take action against the process safety hazard factors causing the incident in the refinery and petrochemical plant, major process safety incidents can be prevented through eliminating or decreasing hazardous factors. We conducted a survey for the major process safety incident precursor to look specifically into the potential process safety hazardous factors of refineries and petrochemical plants in the Yeosu chemical complex. A self-assessment checklist, which was published by Center for Chemical Process Safety "Recognizing catastrophic incident warning signs in the process industry" on major incidents warning sign, was used for the survey. Through this survey, the major process safety incident leading indicators in the process industry were found by process safety management elements, and each site and/or facility can use these leading indicators for activities for process safety incident prevention. In addition, we proposed action items required to eliminate the root cause of those process safety incident leading indicators.

  • Early detection in real-time response of slope movements ensures tremendous saving of lives and repair costs from catastrophic disaster Therefore, it is essential to constantly monitor the performance and integrity of slope-stabilizing structures such as Rock bolt, Nail and Pile during or after installation. We developed a novel monitoring system using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG)sensor. It's advantages are highly sensitivity, small dimension and electro-magnetic immunity. capability of multiplexing, system integrity, remote sensing - these serve real-time health monitoring of the structures. Real-time strain measurement by the signal processing program is shown graphically and it gives a warning sound when the monitored strain state exceeds a given threshold level so that any sign of abnormal disturbance on the spot can be easily perceived.

  • A new hit-and-miss ratio transform is introduced as a modified hit-and-miss transform to be robust to noise, which uses a quasi-matching technique based on the fitting ratio functions. And a new gray-level object segmentation algorithm is proposed, which is based on the hit-and-miss ratio transform and threshold decomposition. The proposed segmentation images, and is similarly applicable to segmentation of an object with specific shapes form natural real images.
