  • The ROK TRANSCOM is trying to establish a concrete wartime sealift operation plan. But there are many problems to be solved for setting up the plan. The most serious problem is to procure war materiel to be shipped in U.S.A and next one is to determine the number of sealift assets and to allocate them. The process of sealift operation can be described as follows. Before the order of vessel mobilization, all vessels appointed for activation would be scattered in worldwide in the state of Beaded or unloaded. After the order of vessel mobilization, vessels would go to SPGE(seaport of embarkation) to load war materiel. Some loaded ships should offload the commercial cargo to the near port as soon as they are activated, before they would go to SPOE. All vessels would load procured materiel in SPOE and then go to SPOD(seaport of debarkation). They would offload war materiel in SPOD and then go back to SPOE to load war materiel again. We will simulate this process using ARENA(1), evaluate the sealift capability of ROK and find omit problems of the sealift plan. This model ultimately evaluates the sealift capability and provides planners with critical information far establishing and correcting the plan. This study can also provide military planners with a flexible and accessible decision support tool to provide advance planning under a variety of conditions on the sealift capability. The military planner is expected to make use of this model as a standard for establishing effective and concrete sealift operation in the near future. We can conclude how procurement capability significantly affects the result of sealift operation through this model. We could decide the appropriate levee of sealift asset such as the number of vessels and the number of available berth. So we could allocate effectively the resources for completing the sealift operation within the TGT(Target) time.

  • The warfare caused a dramatic change when new technology was introduced to the battlefield or when the technology was matured to change the concept of operation. Thus, the rapid development of science since the 19th century is also rapidly changing the aspect and speed of war, and the recent speed of change is making it more difficult to predict future warfare than in the past In particular, in the past, it was difficult to predict the future warfare based on the latest science and technology, because it was difficult to spread and seize advanced science and technology. But global human exchange, technology hijacking by internet, and developing of asymmetric skills and methods caused more complex to technology based warfare prediction. In other words, the nature and principles of war, together with the development of science and technology, should be considered togther to predict future warfare. Therefore this study is based on the thory and principles of war and the latest science and technology to predict the future warfare situation that the military will face.

  • Objectives : This pilot study examined the physical and psychological sequela of Korean War victims. Methods : Of 255 elderly who completed the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), we selected 16 subjects who suffered severe traumatic experiences during the Korean War and met more than 2 specified symptoms of PTSD in DSM-IV-TR and 16 controls. Demographic characteristics, medical history including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia and brain infarction, Geriatric Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, suicide scale in MINI, and a scale for the assessment of somatic symptoms were compared between subjects with trauma experience and controls. Results : Subjects with trauma experience were more likely to have brain infarction and diabetes mellitus compared to control group. Depressive symptoms and suicidal risk were significantly higher in subjects with trauma experience than controls. Subjects with trauma experience showed significantly higher scores in Trait Anxiety scale and more complained of pain than controls. Conclusion : This study suggests that traumatic experience probably induce physical and psychological problem even 60 years later. Further studies are needed to confirm the results of this pilot study.

  • This research is aimed at contriving to expand to its base on the research work Military medicine in East Asia by introducing GunjungUihak(means Military medicine) and adding translations and commentaries to it and propagating to academic circles. GunjungUihak is the only technical book on GunjungUihak which was written for the purpose of treating soldiers in time of war. One of the characteristics shown in its prescription is convenience in medical treatment; the writer of GunjungUihak Wangmyeonghak(王鳴學) edited pills and a powdered medicine to be prescribed in large proportions so that they could be used urgently in the situation of battles at a viewpoint of a general while collecting knowledge of medicine. In addition, this book is compiled with a very short edition with one volume and 18 units. Including only a little amount in the book means that it was compiled by extracting only the contents needed in preparation for the wartime emergency, and such a measure was taken for military surgeons to carry it with facility during the time of war. In addition, much weight of this book was given to the diseases caused by environment with which soldiers came in contact in time of combat, not the wounds by the weapons of war as specified from the beginning of the book, which suggests that the environmental factor of the friendly forces was much more threatening than the arms of enemy troops in the situation of a combat. Like this, GunjungUihak is a material of great value in that it is showing a model of the aspects of Military medicine in East Asia at that time even in its fragmentary writings and it has been preserved by Korea.

  • Maxillofacial war injures is specific representative of severe hard and soft tissue defect. This type of injuries were different from the trauma because it may be fatal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the injury type base on the retrograde medical record in the 104 patients from Feb. 1991 to Aug. 1992 in Korea Veterans Hospital. The obtained results were as follows. 1. Among 104 cases, 51 cases(49.0%) were classified as mandibular defects only, and 53 cases (51.0%) were classified as maxillary with mandibular defect (combined). 2. The etiologic factors of injury were gunshot, artillery and grenade or shell: 33 cases, 14cases, and 10 cases respectively in Korea War, 19 cases, 5 cases, and 8 cases respectively in Vietnam War. 3. In 57 cases of mandibular partial defect, the angle area showed the highest frequencies, 18 cases(31.6%). 4. In 42 cases of mandibular segmental defect, the area between the 1st molar and the ascending ramus showed the highest frequencies. 17 cases(40.4%), and almost all cases were unilateral defect (40 cases, 95.0%) 5. Reconstruction method performed for segmental mandibular defect were wire or plate(15 cases, 35.7%) and soft tissue closure only(12 cases, 28.7%), respectively.

  • The end of cold war and the trend of the detente brought about many changes in the military security policy and in the munitions industry of the West-Europe : reduction of the defence budget, diminution of the military power force and armaments, decrease of the exportation and the domestic demand of ordnance, and augmentation of discharged laborers. This mutation caused the munitions industry and the war industrials regions to a crisis. The munition industrials enterprises which was confronted a crisis searched for diverse strategies like an reconversion to the civil products, an internal diversification and an external growth. And the European Union, the national government, and local or regional self-government implemented policies for diversification of regional economic with an reconversion in order to minimize the effect of the regional economic and society from the crisis of the munition industry.

  • This study has the purpose of geopolitical analysis on the role, function and problem of (trans) frontier park in Southern Africa. Frontier parks in Southern Africa had been used as a buffer zone between colonial empires and British colonial administration during the colonial period and as an interdiction zone of communism and black liberation movement during the apartheid regime, the cold war and the civil war. The ecological transfrontier peace parks in Southern Africa which is integrating the adjacent Frontier parks is utilized as a means of a conflict resolution and peace building after the end of cold war, civil war and apartheid regime, The ecological transfrontier peace parks in Southern Africa is very highly regarded as an effective means for a conflict resolution and peace building. But it is also being criticized for a reproduction of South Africa's politico-economic domination and of a socio-spatial division between racial groups.

  • In this study, prepared synthesis waterborne acrylic resin and water soluble milk casein resin. And than extent of casein contents in acrylic resin. We measured property of these samples by Lamb leather which is coated by acrylic-casein resins. According to measure data for solvent resistance, WAR resin and Hybrid resins had good property. Among this result knew that increase of casein constant did not influence to big change of hybrid resin property. As test of tensile strength, WAR had lowest strength($1.399kg_f/mm^2$) and WAC-3 had highest strength($1.426kg_f/mm^2$). Also we knew that best property of abrasion was WAC-3(69.774 mg.loss). In elongation case, WAR had best property(820%) in this experiment.

  • The outbreak of the First and the Second World Wars cast great shadow across the Europe including mathematical society. The IMU led by French mathematicians after the First World War ceased to exist because it was used politically. As Europe ran into the Second World War, all the international mathematical activities were ceased. Prominent mathematicians were put into camp by Nazi or moved to the United States of America. After the war, European mathematicians did not have capacity to represent the international mathematical society anymore. This led Stone and other American mathematicians to form the new IMU, which was independent of political ideology. This paper studies the birth process of the new IMU after the War and some major events that happened to ICM in 1950s.

  • Two isolation methods using the open plate and air sampler were applied to examine microbial distribution as an environmental factor for conservation of cultural properties in the War Memorial in Korea. The numbers of fungi were the abundant in the air of entrance and inside of the exhibition room where visitors were crowded, compared with inside of repository rooms. Fungal and bacterial distributions in the exhibition room during exhibition period were higher than during nonexhibition period, These results are due to the inflow of air current carrying microoganisms to the exibition rooms from outside with visitors. Fungi isolated from the War Memorial were identified as 19 species and one thermophilic fungus, Neurospora crassa. The majority of the isolated fungi are seemed to cause damage to cellulose materials in the Memorial.
