In this paper, the behavior of underground strutted retaining structure under seismic condition in non-liquefiable dry cohesionless soil is analyzed numerically. The numerical model is validated against the published results obtained from a study on embedded cantilever retaining wall under seismic condition. The validated model is used to investigate the difference between the static and seismic response of the structure in terms of four design parameters, e.g., support member or strut force, wall moment, lateral wall deflection and ground surface displacement. It is found that among the different design parameters, the one which is mostly affected by the earthquake force is wall deflection and the least affected is the strut force. To get the best possible results under seismic condition, the embedment depth of the wall and thickness of the wall can be chosen as around 100% and 6% of the depth of final excavation level, respectively. The stiffness of the strut may also be chosen as $5{\times}105kN/m/m$ to achieve best possible performance under seismic condition.
A numerical study using linear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of basement wall subject to soil and water pressure. Currently, structural design of basement wall is based on the assumption for boundary condition of plate, which may lead to the erroneous results. In this study, parametric studies are performed to investigate the variation of moment and shear force according to column-to-wall stiffness ratios and aspect ratios. Scaled factors applicable to the design of basement wall are proposed with the illustration of desist examples.
One of the most destructive forces around greenhouses is wind. Wind loads can be obtained by multiplying velocity pressure by dimensionless wind force coefficient. Generally, wind force coefficients can be determined by wind tunnel experiments. The wind force coefficient distribution on a single - span arched greenhouse was estimated using experimental data and compared with reported values from various countries. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The coefficients obtained from this study agree with the values proposed by G. L. Nelson except about 0.5 of difference in the middle region of roof section. This discrepancy is mainly attributed to the dissimilarity of experimental conditions (or wind tunnel test such as Reynolds number, type of terrain, surface roughness of model, location of the lapping and measuring methods. 2. Considering that the wind force coefficients are varied along the height of a wall at wind direction perpendicular to wall, structural analysis using subdivided wind force coefficient distribution is more resonable for wall. 3. It is recommendable that wind force coefficient distribution on a roof should take more subdivision than the existing four equal divisions for more accurate structural design. 4. Structural design using wind forces close to real values is more advantageous in safety and expense.
A numerical study using nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of isolated reinforced concrete walls subjected to combined axial force and in-plane and out-of-plane bending moments. For a nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities was developed. Through numerical studies, the internal force distribution in the cross-section is idealized, and then a new design method, different from the existing methods based on the plane section hypothesis was developed. According to the proposed method, variations in the interaction curve of the in-plane bending moment and axial force depends on the range of the permissible axial force per unit length, that is determined by a given amount of out-of-plane bending moment. As the out-of-plane bending moment increases, the interaction curve shrinks, indicating a decrease in the ultimate strength. The proposed method is then compared with an existing method, using the plane section hypothesis. Compared with the proposed method, the existing method overestimates the ultimate strength for the walls subjected to low out-of-plane bending moments, while it underestimates the ultimate strength for walls subject to high out-of-plane bending moments. The proposed method can address the out-of-plane local behavior of the individual wall segments that may govern the ultimate strength of the entire wall.
The energy-saving block and invisible multi-ribbed frame composite wall (EBIMFCW) is a new type of load-bearing wall. The study of this paper focus on it is hysteresis rule under horizontal cyclic loading. Firstly, based on the experimental data of the twelve specimens under horizontal cyclic loading, the influence of two important parameters of axial compression ratio and shear-span ratio on the restoring force model was analyzed. Secondly, a tetra-linear restoring force model considering four feature points and the degradation law of unloading stiffness was established by combining theoretical analysis and regression analysis of experimental data, and the theoretical formula of the peak load of the EBIMFCW was derived. Finally, the hysteretic path of the restoring force model was determined by analyzing the hysteresis characteristics of the typical hysteresis loop. The results show that the curves calculated by the tetra-linear restoring force model in this paper agree well with the experimental curves, especially the calculated values of the peak load of the wall are very close to the experimental values, which can provide a reference for the elastic-plastic analysis of the EBIMFCW.
This paper presents a numerical study on multiphase flows induced by wall adhesion The CSF(Continuum Surface Force} model is used for the calculation of the surface tension force and implemented in an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). The present method(code) employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with volume capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing As an application of the present method, the effects of wall adhesion are numerically simulated with the CSF model for a shallow pool of water located at the bottom of a cylindrical tank. Two different cases are computed, one in which the water wets the wall and one in which the water does not wet the wall. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately surface tension-dominant multiphase flows induced by wall adhesion.
The standard drag force and virtual mass force, which exert to the primary flow direction, are generally considered in two-phase analysis computational codes. In this paper, the lift force, wall lubrication force, and turbulent dispersion force including turbulence models, which are essential for a computational multi-fluid dynamics model and play an important role in motion perpendicular to the primary flow direction, were introduced and verified with conceptual problems.

The use of strut preloading method is gradually increasing in braced excavations in Korea. And it is necessary to analyse the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, bending moment and strut axial force etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils were peformed in strut preloading application. As results, about 50% of design strut load was effective as a preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of structures. And at least the effective stiffness of strut should be over 25% of the ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. In order to protect excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut was rather effective way than to increase the stiffness of strut and braced wall, but the excessive axial force of strut should be checked simultaneously.

Ferroelectric properties are governed by domain structures and domain wall motions, so it is of significance to understand domain evolution processes under mechanical stress. In the present study, in situ piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) observation under compressive stress was carried out for a near-morphotropic PZT. Both $180^{\circ}$ and $non-180^{\circ}$ domain structures were observed from PFM images, and their habit planes were identified using electron backscatter diffraction in conjunction with PFM data. By externally applied mechanical stress, needle-like $non-180^{\circ}$ domain patterns were broadened via domain wall motions. This was interpreted via phenomenological approach such that the total energy minimization can be achieved by domain wall motion rather than domain nucleation mainly due to the local gradient energy. Meanwhile, no motion was observed from curvy $180^{\circ}$ domain walls under the mechanical stress, validating that $180^{\circ}$ domain walls are not directly influenced by mechanical stress.
The motion of a small, heavy rigid particle in the shear flow on a stationary wall is investigated in the context of Stokes flow. The lift force proposed by Saffman(1965) and later modified by Mclaughlin(1991) and Mei(1992) is considered in the prediction of the particle motion far away from the wall. Later, the expression of the lift force is modified to take into account the effect of wall(Cherukat and Mclaughlin, 1994). In the analysis the gravity and buoyancy effect are also taken into account. An analytical and numerical results for the terminal velocities and trajectories of the particle after the enough lapse of time are presented.
