  • This paper aims at investigating the material and dimensions of a wall barrier such as installation depth, thickness, and distance from vibration source by means of finite element method (FEM). In this study, various materials such as concrete, EPS, and steel were adopted. The results showed that the efficiency of a wall barrier appears to be more dependent on installation depth than thickness. In addition, a concrete wall barrier is less efficient than any other wall barrier. In contrast, EPS wall barriers seem to be much sensitive to the wall thickness than the depth.

  • Experimental investigations were carried out to examine the explosion characteristics by different sizes in the wall surface shape of a water gel barrier in an explosion chamber, 1,600 mm in length with a square cross-section of $100{\times}100\;mm^2$. The sizes in the wall surface shape were varied by using water gel barriers with a cross-section of $100{\times}200\;mm^2$ and its were varied in the bottom of the chamber away 300, 700 and 1,100 mm, respectively from the closed end of the chamber. The flame propagation images were photographed with a high speed camera and the pressure was recorded using a pressure transducer and a data acquisition system. It was found that as the size of the wall surface shape increased, the flame propagation process and the time taken to reach the maximum pressure were found to be faster. As a result, both the flame speed and the explosion overpressure increased as the size of the wall surface shape increased.

  • We investigate the field-dependence of energy barrier for various cell diameters and two type of geometry through the NEB method. We find that the energy barrier can depend strongly on the cell size when the switching is governed by the domain wall motion. Moreover we also examine the cell size dependence of energy barrier for two type of cell geometry. In the presentation, we will discuss the effect of domain wall formation and more various cell size on the energy barrier in detail.

  • In general, environment-induced vibration propagates from the center of source to the destination through ground. In fact, the mechanism of wave propagation is highly dependent on the ground conditions, and various methods to protect structures from such a ground vibration have been proposed. The method of wall barrier has been frequently used to cut off ground vibration effectively. However, the capability of wall barrier may be affected by various factors like constituent material of it. Therefore, it is important to figure out appropriate material for the wall barrier. This study is focused on the effect of EPS on the vibration protection. Centrifuge model tests were performed. Two types of models such as a cylindrical and a rectangular wall were used. For the cylindrical type of wall, installation depth was changed, while the length of the wall varied fur the rectangular type to figure out the capability of vibration protection.

  • The purpose of this study was to prevent spreading of contaminants from movement of underground water by creating a barrier using artificial freezing method on a soil contaminated by oils and various DNAPLs. Specimens with 80% and 90% degrees of saturation were prepared to form freezing barrier using artificial freezing method. As the results of freezing specimen within soil bin with artificial ground freezing system, artificial contaminated soil cut off wall formed the thinnest wall after 12 hours. It is judged that this cut off wall will control the second soil pollution by intercepting expansion and movement of pollutants and DNAPLs within artificial contaminated soil cut off wall by underground water, intercepting inflow or outflow of underground water. Cut off walls formed by artificial ground freezing system had each other freezing speed according to degree of saturation.

  • Permeable reactive barrier (PRB) is a prominent in-situ remedial option for cleanup of contaminated groundwater and has been gaining increasing popularity in recent years. Funnel-and-gate systems, comprised of two side wings of impermeable walls and a central gate wall, are frequently implemented in many sites, but often suffers from bypassing of groundwater due to the progressive clogging of the gate wall over extended period of time. This study investigated technical feasibility of a hybrid funnel-and-gate system designed to address the flow deterioration in the gate wall. The key attribute of the proposed hybrid system is the operation of drainage units at the barrier walls and rear end of the gate wall. A conceptual modeling with MODFLOW indicated the groundwater inside the barrier was maintained at appropriate level to be guided toward the gate wall, yielding constant discharging of groundwater from the gate.

  • The use of steel sheet pile walls as barrier walls have the temporary for coffer dam, retaining wall in excavation, etc., but also permanent of semi-permanent for harbor construction, containment systems, vertical barrier systems for waste disposal (landfill) or subway in excavarion. In all these applicaions the resistance of the structure to seepage plays an important role. Also the stability and longevity of the construction, the possibility of permanent control and survey make the steel sheet pile wall a nearly perfect vertical barrier from a technical and economical point of view.

  • In general, open trenches or in-filled trenches have been used to isolate transmitting of vibration. Recently alternative methods, in which various materials are used for wall barriers have been proposed and performed in several sites. Although the effects of these methods are verified, resonable and qualitative evaluation methods have not yet been conducted. It may be because many factors, such as the characteristics of vibration sources, ground condition, and parameters of wall barrier are coupled complicatedly. In this study, a series of centrifugal modelings were conducted in order to examine the evaluation method of a vibration wall barrier when point load transmits to the surface. The experiments were performed with different stiffness of wall barriers and different depths of installations. Using the results obtained from tests, effects of those variables on the efficiency of vibration barrier were analyzed. Through this investigation we observed vibration transmission of under ground, and verified the applicability of ball dropping system which was developed in this study.

  • A nuclear energy facility is one of the most critical facilities to be safely protected during and after operation because the physical destruction of its barriers by an external attack could release radioactivity into the environment and can cause harmful effects. The barrier walls of nuclear energy facilities should be sufficiently robust to protect essential facilities from external attack or sabotage. Physical protection system (PPS) vulnerability assessment of a typical small nuclear research reactor was carried out by simulating an external attack with a tri-nitro toluene (TNT) shaped charge and results are presented. The reinforced concrete (RC) barrier wall of the research reactor located at a distance of 50 m from a TNT-shaped charge was the target of external attack. For the purpose of the impact assessment of the RC barrier wall, a finite element method (FEM) is utilized to simulate the destruction condition. The study results showed that a hole-size of diameter 342 mm at the front side and 364 mm at the back side was created on the RC barrier wall as a result of a 143.35 kg TNT-shaped charge. This aperture would be large enough to let at least one person can pass through at a time. For the purpose of the PPS vulnerability assessment, an Estimate of Adversary Sequence Interruption (EASI) model was used, which enabled the determination of most vulnerable path to the target with a probability of interruption equal to 0.43. The study showed that the RC barrier wall is vulnerable to a TNT-shaped charge impact, which could in turn reduce the effectiveness of the PPS.

  • Thermal bridge on a building envelope causes additional heat loss which increases the heating energy consumption. As the higher building insulation performance is required, heat loss through thermal bridge becomes higher proportion among total building heating energy consumption. For the exterior insulation and finish system, thermal bridge between window frame and concrete wall should be constidered as one of main reasons of heat loss. In this study, the thermal bridge barrier between window frame and concrete wall(STAR) was proposed as the best practice for reducing thermal bridge. The STAR was confirmed that the use of thermal bridge barrier imporved the annual heat energy capacity by 35% or more and the innitial construction cost by 7.4% or less because of additional interior insulation against condensation. Finally the life cycle cost during 20 year by heating energy of a building reduced by 25% or more compared with the exist technology. This STAR thermal bridge barrier will be used as the main technology to improve the energy efficiency of building.
