Experiments have been conducted to obtain local and average heat transfer coefficients associated with impingement of a row of circular, free surface-water jets on a constant heat flux surface. Nozzle arrays are a row of 3 jets (nozzle dia.=4.6 mm) and a row of 5 jets (nozzle dia.=3.6 mm), and the nozzle configuration is Reverse cone type revealed good performance in heat transfer. Nozzle-to-plate spacings ranging from 16 mm to 80 mm were investigated for two jet center to center spacings 25 mm and 37.5 mm in the jet velocity of 3 m/s (R $e_{D}$=27000) to 8 m/s (R $e_{D}$=70000). For a row of 3 jets and a row of 5 jets, the stagnation heat transfer of the central jet is lower than that of adjacent jets. In the wall jet region between jets, for small nozzle-to-plate spacing and large jet velocity, the local maximum in the Nusselt number was observed, however, for small jet velocity or large nozzle-to-plate spacing, the local maximum was not observed. Except for the condition of $V_{O}$=8 m/s and H/D=10, the average Nusselt number reveals the following ranking: a row of 5 jets, a row of 3 jets, single jet. For a row of 3 jet, the maximum average Nusselt number occurs at H/D=8 ~ 10, and for a row of 5 jets, it occurs at H/D=2 ~ 4. Compared with the single jet, enhancement of average heat transfer for a row of 3 jets is approximately 1.52 ~ 2.28 times, and 1.69 ~ 3.75 times for a row of 5 jets.ets.s.

Convective heat transfer coefficient was measured around a circular secondary jet ejected into the supersonic flow field. The wall temperature measurement around a injection nozzle was conducted using infra-red camera. The constant heat flux is applied to the wall around a secondary nozzle. According to jet to freestream momentum ratio, the injection flow penetrates into the supersonic flow field. The measured temperature is used to calculate the convective heat transfer coefficient.

Linear stability analysis of 2-dimensional wall jet is conducted by using parabolized stability equation (PSE). Wall jet is found to be modelled well by boundary layer approximation except for the neighborhood of the nozzle exit, and the introduction of local similarity variable makes the streamwise basic flow Reynolds number independent. Stability characteristics of the wall jet obtained

An experimental investigation has been conducted with the objective of studying the mixing mechanism near the nozzle exit in a tone-excited jet diffusion flame. The fuel jet was pulsed by means of a loudspeaker-driven cavity. The excitation frequencies were chosen for the two cases of the non-resonant and resonant frequency identified as a fuel tube resonance due to acoustic excitation. The effect of tone-excitations on mixing pattern near the nozzle exit and flame was visualized using various techniques, including schlieren photograph and laser light scattering photograph from $TiO_2$ seed particles. In order to clarify the details of the flame feature observed by visualization methods, hotwire measurements have been made. Excitation at the resonant frequency makes strong mixing near the nozzle. In this case, the fuel jet flow in the vicinity of nozzle exit breaks up into disturbed fuel parcels. This phenomena affects greatly the combustion characteristics of the tone excited jet and presumably occurs by flow separation from the wall inside the fuel nozzle. As a result, in the resonant frequency the flame length reduces greatly.
An experimental study was conducted to compare the heat transfer characteristics of an impinging slot jet and three kinds of impinging circular jets. Thermochromic liquid crystal with an image processing system was employed to measure the temperature of impinging wall where constant heat flux condition was applied. The distribution of convective heat transfer coefficients were then evaluated for eight nozzle-to-surface distance settings for each jet cases. The cooling effect was linearly proportional to the number of nozzles for circular jet cases at the same nozzle exit speed. However, the heat transfer under constant volume flow rate was the most at single circular jet. It was concluded that the overall convective heat transfer was better at the circular jets than the slot jet.

An experimental study of jet impingement on the surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent characteristics and the heat transfer rates measured when this jet impinges normally to a flat plate. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 30,000 to 90,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~$4.2^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance(H/D) is from 6 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter(H/D) is 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance(H/D). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity.

Single-phase convection and partial nucleate boiling in free-surface and submerged jet impingements of subcooled water ejected through a 2-mm-diameter circular pipe nozzle were investigated by local measurements. Effects of jet velocity and nozzle-to-imping-ing surface distance as well as heat flux on distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficients were considered. Incipience of boiling began from far downstream in contrast with the cases of the planar water jets of high Reynolds numbers. Heat flux increase and velocity decrease reduced the temperature difference between stagnation and far downstream regions with the increasing influence of boiling in partial boiling regime. The chance in nozzle-to-impinging surface distance from H/d=1 to 12 had a significant effect on heat transfer around the stagnation point of the submerged jet, but not for the free-surface jet. The submerged jet provided the lower cooling performance than the free-surface jet due to the entrainment of the pool fluid of which temperature increased.

In the course of missile system design, jet plume impingement is encountered in designing airframe as well as launchers, requiring careful investigation of its effect on the system. In the present paper, recent works on such topic are presented to demonstrate usefulness of CFD results in helping design the hardware. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. The main parameters are the ratio of the jet pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle and the wall. In the current application, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, but the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. The same methodology is then applied to a complex vertical launcher system (VLS), capturing its flow structure and major design parameter. These applications involving jets are thus hoped to demonstrate the usefulness and value of CFD in designing a complex structure in the real engineering environment.

A turbulent wake generated by a cylinder in nozzle contraction affects to the jet flow characteristics. In this study, a computational work to investigate the effect of the turbulent wake on two-dimensional subsonic jet was carried out with three different kinds of nozzle. Computations are applied to the two-dimensional unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations. Several kinds of turbulent models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. It was known that the wake flow enhanced the spread of the jet flow, compared with no wake flow condition. It was also found that the jet core is shortened by the wake flow developed from a control cylinder.
A multi-dimensioanl model is being increasingly used to predict the thermo-flow field in the gas turbine combustor. This article addresses an integrated survey of modeling of the liquid spray formation and fuel distribution in gas turbine with high-shear nozzle/swirler assembly. The processes of concern include breakup of a liquid jet injected through a hole type orifice into air stream, spray-wall interaction and spray-film interaction, breakup of liquid sheet into ligaments and droplet,5, and secondary droplet breakup. Atomization of liquid through hole nozzle is described using a liquid blobs model and hybrid model of Kelvin-Helmholtz wave and Rayleigh-Taylor wave. The high-speed viscous liquid sheet atomization on the pre-filmer is modeled by a linear stability analysis. Spray-wall interaction model and liquid film model over the wall surface are also considered.
