In this study, various countermeasures used to mitigate tunnel deformations due to nearby multi-propped basement excavation in soft clay are explored by three-dimensional numerical analyses. Field measurements are used to calibrate the numerical model and model parameters. Since concrete slabs can constrain soil and retaining wall movements, tunnel movements reach the maximum value when soils are excavated to the formation level of basement. Deformation shapes of an existing tunnel due to adjacent basement excavation are greatly affected by relative position between tunnel and basement. When the tunnel is located above or far below the formation level of basement, it elongates downward-toward or upward-toward the basement, respectively. It is found that tunnel movements concentrate in a triangular zone with a width of 2 He (i.e., final excavation depth) and a depth of 1 D (i.e., tunnel diameter) above or 1 D below the formation level of basement. By increasing retaining wall thickness from 0.4 m to 0.9 m, tunnel movements decrease by up to 56.7%. Moreover, tunnel movements are reduced by up to 80.7% and 61.3%, respectively, when the entire depth and width of soil within basement are reinforced. Installation of isolation wall can greatly reduce tunnel movements due to adjacent basement excavation, especially for tunnel with a shallow burial depth. The effectiveness of isolation wall to reduce tunnel movement is negligible unless the wall reaches the level of tunnel invert.
In this paper, incompressible and compressible flow characteristics around the butterfly valve have been investigated. In order to simplify the problem, a flat disk valve with various valve disk angles and pressure ratios is considered in the present calculations. It was found that as the disk angle increases, the stagnation point on the front surface of the disk moves to the center of the surface and the inflow velocity decreases. The maximum flow velocity occurs at the downstream of throat because of the formation of vents contracta. As the pressure ratio decreases, compressibility effects increase and the jet formed between the throttle body wall and the disk edge becomes supersonic. This flow also builds up as a shock cell structure. The increase of disk angle and pressure ratio makes the mass flow at the inlet decrease, while the increase of disk angle and the decrease of pressure ratio make the pressure loss coefficient increase.

A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.

Experimental study on characteristics of direct contact condensation of steam discharged into a sub-cooled water pool has been performed using five different sizes of horizontal nozzle over a wide range of steam mass fluxes and pool temperatures. Steam condensation phenomena have been observed visually and by taking pictures of steam jets using a high speed video camera. Two different steam jet shapes such as ellipsoidal shape and conical shape were typically observed for a stable steam jet, depending on the steam mass flux and pool temperature. The steam jet expansion ratio and the steam jet length as well as the condensation heat transfer coefficients were determined. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter on these parameters were also discussed. Empirical correlations for the steam jet lengths and the condensation heat transfer coefficients as a function of steam mass flux and condensation driving potential were established. The axial and radial temperature distributions in steam jet and in surrounding water were measured. The effect of steam mass flux, pool temperature, and nozzle diameter were also discussed. The condensation regime map, which consists of six regimes such as chugging, transient chugging, condensation oscillation, stable condensation, bubble condensation oscillation, and intermittent oscillation condensation, were established. In addition, the dynamic pressures at the pool wall were measured. The close relation of dynamic pressure and steam condensation mode, which is also dependent on steam mass flux and pool temperature, was found.

The local heat/mass transfer coefficients for arrays of impinging circular air jets on a plane surface are determined by means of the naphthalene sublimation method. Fluid from the spent jets is constrained to flow out of the system in one direction. Therefore, the spent fluid makes a crossflow in the confined space. The present study investigates effects of jet-orifice-plate to impingement-surface spacing and jet Reynolds number. The spanwise- and overall-averaged heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained by numerical integrating the local heat transfer coefficients. The local maximum heat/mass transfer coefficients move further in the downstream direction due to the increase of crossflow velocity. At the mid-way between adjacent jets, the heat/mass transfer coefficients have a small peak owing to the collision of the adjacent wall jets and are affected strongly by the crossflow. The effect of the crossflow occurs strongly at the small orifice-to-impingement surface distance.
Even though a relatively complete knowledge base has been established for diesel sprays, much of the knowledge cannot be directly translated to correlate the characteristics of gasoline spray. The macroscopic characteristics of gasoline impingement spray was investigated with photographic and image processing technique by Particle Motion Analysis System. The injector with single hole nozzle diameter of 0.28 mm was used in this experiment and the injection duration was selected as 10 msec. The injection pressure with 0.3, 0.35, and 0.4 MPa, impingement distance or 70, 100 and 130m, impingement angle or 0.15, 30 and $45^{\circ}$ were employed for the variables to affect the spray characteristics of impinging spray. It is clear that there is the analogy on the spray tip penetration between the gasoline impinging jet and diesel free jet. The spray tip penetration of impinging gasoline spray is proportional to the quarter power of the time after start of injection. The maximum height of impinging gasoline spray is also proportional to the quarter power of the time regardless of impingement distance, impingement angle and injection pressure. In addition, the effect of impingement angle on the spray tip penetration is significant according to the time after start of injection, even though there is minor effect in the initial stage of time after start of injection. Moreover, there is no remarkable effect of injection pressure on the spray tip Penetration under the experimental condition used in this study.

Measured shock wave effects were investigated by changing shock strength and position with particular emphasis on the stability limits of hydrogen-air jet flames. For this purpose, a supersonic nonpremixed, jet-like flame was stabilized along the axis of a Mach 2.5 wind tunnel, and wedges were mounted on the sidewall in order to interact oblique shock waves with the flame. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Schilieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and flame stability limits were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock-flame interaction. Substantial improvements in the flame stability limits were achieved by properly interacting the shock waves with the flameholding recirculation zone. The reason for the significant improvement in flame stability limits is believed to be the adverse pressure gradient caused by the shock, which can elongate the recirculation zone.

An experimental study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of shock waves on the supersonic hydrogen-air jet flames stabilized in the Mach 2.5 model scramjet combustor. This experiment was the first reacting flow experiment interacting with shock waves. Two identical $10^{\cire}$ wedges were mounted on the diverging sidewalls of the combustor in order to produce oblique shock waves that interacted with the flame. Schlieren visualization pictures, wall static pressures, and combustion efficiency at two different air stagnation temperatures were measured and compared to corresponding flames without shock wave-flame interaction. It was observed that shock waves significantly altered the shape of supersonic jet flames, but had different effects on combustion efficiency depending on air temperatures. At the higher air stagnation temperature and higher fuel flow rates, combustion of efficiency showed a better result.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of fluidic thrust vector control using the co-flow injection. In previous research, both numerical and experimental approaches for steady state were conducted to investigate operation-parameters and detail flow structure of the fluidic thrust vector control system. Based upon the previous results, numerical unsteady calculation was conducted to analyze the dynamic characteristics of jet up- and down-ward vectoring so that the transition time and the pressure distribution along the wall, and so on were investigated.
The characteristics of turbulent flow and mixing in a small can type combustor are investigated by means of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Attention is paid for a combustor having a baffle plate with oxidant injection and fuel injection holes and study is made for three cases of different baffle plate configurations. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by interaction between the jets during their developing process and large vortical flows generated in the vicinity of the combustor wall or fuel jet front. This particular flow feature is effective to accelerate the slow mixing between fuel and oxidant suffering from low Reynolds number condition in such a small combustor. In particular, the vortical flow region ahead of fuel jet plays an important role for rapid mixing. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged turbulent flow and scalar quantities which show peculiar characteristics corresponding to different vortical flow structures for each baffle plate shapes.
