In recent years, many wearable devices and mobile apps related to life care have been developed, and a service for measuring the movement during walking and showing the amount of exercise has been provided. However, they do not measure walking in detail, so there may be errors in the total calorie consumption. If the user's behavior is measured by a multi-axis sensor and learned by a machine learning algorithm to recognize the kind of behavior, the detailed operation of walking can be autonomously distinguished and the total calorie consumption can be calculated more than the conventional method. In order to verify this, we measured activities and created a model using a machine learning algorithm. As a result of the comparison experiment, it was confirmed that the average accuracy was 12.5% or more higher than that of the conventional method. Also, in the measurement of the momentum, the calorie consumption accuracy is more than 49.53% than that of the conventional method. If the activity recognition is performed using the wearable device and the machine learning algorithm, the accuracy can be improved and the energy consumption calculation accuracy can be improved.
A walking navigation system (usually known as a locomotion interface) is an interactive platform which gives simulated walking sensation to users using sensed bipedal motion signals. This enables us to perform navigation tasks using only bipedal movement. Especially, it is useful for the certain VR task which emphasizes on physical human movement, or accompanies understanding of the size and complexity of building structures. In this work, we described system components of VR walking system and investigated several types of walking platform by literature survey. We adopted a MS Kinect depth sensor for the motion recognition and a treadmill which includes directional turning mechanism for the walking platform. Through the integration of these components with a VR navigation scenario, we developed a simple VR walking navigation system. Finally several technical issues were found during development process, and further research directions were suggested for the system improvement.
We propose laser scanner sensor system based walking pattern and tracking method of multiple human. This system uses laser scanners sensors and is applicable to wide and crowded area such as hospital and medical care center. The primary objective of this research is to promote the development of robust, repeatable and transferable software for security system that can automatically detect, track and follow people in public area. We developed the method of human identification for this system. Our method is following: 1. Best-walking pattern data are obtained by the help of human position and direction data obtained by laser scanners. 2. Human identification is conducted by calculating the correlation between the step length of walking human. It becomes possible to conduct human identification even in crowded scenes by estimating the movements of waling human' feet are periodic. In the experiment in the station, some effectiveness of this method became clear.
There is an increasing interest in health and research on methods for measuring human body information. The importance of continuously observing information such as the step change and the walking speed is increasing. At a person's gait, information about the disease and the currently weakened area can be known. In this paper, gait is measured using wearable walking module built in shoes. We want to make continuous measurement possible by simplifying gait measurement method. This module is designed to receive information of gyro sensor and acceleration sensor. The designed module is capable of WiFi communication and the collected walking information is stored in the server. The information stored in the server is corrected by integrating the acceleration sensor and the gyro sensor value. A band-pass filter was used to reduce the error. This data is categorized by the Gait Finder into walking and waiting states. When walking, each step is divided and stored separately for analysis.
This paper presents a sensor-based cane mechanism for walking aid of the visually impaired person. We also describe an approach to decide properly the length of the specified cane mechanism. The cane mechanism has some sensors to identify the possibility of a collision between the cane user and an object and/or a person, and a signal processing unit that enables the user to recognize such a collision is attached in the mechanism. Thus, the walker using this cane can recognize in advance the possibility of such a collision in his walking process. Consequently, it is helpful for the visually impaired person to walk on a pedestrian road safely. The feature of the proposed cane mechanism and its availability have been shown through experimental works in a typical walking environment.
