The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hemispheric damage in body composition of male adults with stroke experiences. The Fourth and Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES) with body composition results obtained from the DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) assessments were used for this study. Survey data of 18 post-stroke men and 28 healthy controls were obtained. Both the lean and fat masses of the upper and lower limbs were utilized to compare for the compositions between the limbs in post-stroke subjects. In addition, the effect of exercise habit was also observed for the influence of physical activity in body composition. Mixed results in left and right limb compositions were shown between the groups. When the subjects were further divided based on walking days per week, sedentary (walk ${\leq}2d/wk$) post-stroke group showed significantly greater fat mass and less lean mass than the physically active people (walk ${\geq}3d/wk$). In comparison to the healthy sedentary and physically active controls, two post-stroke groups showed greater variations. The results indicate that physical activity maintains or improve the quality of both the upper and lower limb composition in patients with post-stroke men.
The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of acute exercise on blood vaspin, glucose level, and inflammatory cytokines in middle-aged women with pre-diabetes. Nineteen middle-aged women (normal women, n = 11) and women with pre-diabetes(n = 8), who were apparently healthy and not taking any medications affecting their blood pressure or blood glucose, participated. Body fatness parameters including body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist circumference were measured using a bio-impedance analyzer. Resting blood pressure was measured in duplicate, and mean values were used for the data analysis. Regardless of group assignments, all subjects participated in a 3-day consecutive walking exercise at an intensity of 65% VO2max targeting an energy expenditure of 1200 kcal (400 kcal per day). The major outcome variables included total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, glucose, vaspin, interleukin-6, and adiponectin levels. Unlike normal women, women with pre-diabetes had a significant improvement in the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (p < 0.025) with no significant group difference in response to acute exercise. The findings suggest that acute exercise results in a significant improvement in insulin sensitivity without any change in serum vaspin levels in women with pre-diabetes.
The audible pedestrian signal (APS) is an add-on device which connects to the pedestrian signaling device and informs the contents and changes of the signaling by sound. It provides walking direction information of the pedestrian crossing so that the blind people can safely cross the pedestrian crossing. In an intersection where a plurality of audible pedestrian signal (APS) are installed at an intersection crosswalk, existing audible pedestrian signal (APS) operate simultaneously in the communication radius of a wireless remote controller, which may cause confusion for the blind people and the public may complain about the noise. In this paper, we developed a BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)-based audible pedestrian signal (APS) system capable of supporting two-way communications with a smart-phone that can cross the intersection safely and improve the walking comfort and traffic safety for the blind people. The proposed method is a method in which the BLE beacon communication based audible pedestrian signal (APS) presents active service to the blind people, and the existing audible pedestrian signal (APS) is a way of requesting the passive service by the blind people with the wireless remote control by the unidirectional communication based on 358Mhz. The developed system is installed in the crossroad of Doma-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon, and it is tested and operated by the blind people. The satisfaction evaluation and analysis of the audible pedestrian signal (APS) for the blind people have good results and are planned to be expanded in the future.
Background: Advances in surgical techniques, implant technology, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy have increased the recovery chances of patients with bone sarcomas. Accordingly, patients' expectations on life quality have also increased, highlighting the importance of objective evaluation of the functional results of reconstruction. Methods: Thirteen patients with distal femoral endoprosthesis, who had been followed for an average of 2.9 years were evaluated. Postural stability, daily energy expenditure, muscle power, and range of motion were the four parameters analyzed in this study. The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) score and Toronto Extremity Salvage Score (TESS) were used to assess postoperative function and examine correlations with other parameters. Results: Patients had sedentary activities in 84% of their daily lives. They exhibited a slower speed in the walk across test and a higher sway velocity in the sit-to-stand test (p = 0.005). MSTS scores were significantly correlated with the daily energy expenditure and walking speed. Conclusions: Objective functional results acquired from various clinics will provide significant data to compare reconstruction techniques, rehabilitation protocols, and surgical techniques. In this way, it will be possible to satisfy the expectations of patients that increase in relation to enhanced recovery.
It is a challenging task to make the paraplegic to walk with out the assist of the caregiver. So, we have developed various type of gait orthosis for paraplegic during the five years lately. The purpose of this study ultimately is energy consumption test of serveral type gait orthosis for developing the high efficiency gait orthosis. From the experimental results, the oxygen consumption rate were 6.9$\pm$3.3ml/kg in RGO gait, 5.3$\pm$1.3ml/kg in PGO, and 6.2$\pm$3ml/kg in HGO gait. The maximum hip flexion angle were 16$^{\circ}$ in RGO , 15$^{\circ}$ in PGO, and 47.5$^{\circ}$. in HGO. As a result It was found that. Hybrid Gait Orthosis need high energy consumption more than PGO for walking, but it is small weight and strengthened muscle.
A variety of studies on imitating the skeletal structure and the gait of legged animals have been done in order to develop walking robots which have an ability to adapt to atypical environments. In this paper, we analyzed the gait of a Bearded dragon lizard using the motion capture system, proposed a calibration scheme of the motion data and generated the trotting gait of a lizard based on the calibrated data. Also, we constructed the dynamic model based on the biometric data of a Bearded dragon lizard and applied the trotting gait of the lizard to the dynamic model. We verified the validity of the gait with the commercial dynamic simulation software.
