  • Experimental and numerical studies on the unsteady wake field behind a square cylinder near a wall were conducted to find out how the vortex shedding mechanism is correlated with gap flow. The computations were performed by solving unsteady 2-D Incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a newly developed ${\epsilon}-SST$ turbulence model for more accurate prediction of large separated flows. Through spectral analysis and the smoke wire flow visualization, it was discovered that velocity profiles in a gap region have strong influences on the formation of vortex shedding behind a square cylinder near a wall. From these results, Strouhal number distributions could be found, where the transition region of the Strouhal number was at $G/D=0.5{\sim}0.7$ above the critical gap height. The primary and minor shedding frequencies measured in this region were affected by the interaction between the upper and the lower separated shear layer, and minor shedding frequency was due to the separation bubble on the wall. It was also observed that the position (y/G) and the magnitude of maximum average velocity $(u/u_{\infty})$ in the gap region affect the regular vortex shedding as the gap height increases.

  • In this study, lumped-vortex element method and thin airfoil theory were used to analyze aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils with relative motion that had camber lines of NACA $44{\times}{\times}$ airfoil in 2-dimensional unsteady incompressible potential flow. Velocity disturbance due to airfoil was calculated by lumped-vortex element model and force distribution on airfoil by unsteady Bernoulli's equation. Variables in relative motion were considered the period p, the amplitude of flapping $A_f$ and pitching $A_p$, and the phase difference between flapping and pitching ${\phi}_p$ and the angle of attack ${\alpha}$. Due to movement of an airfoil, dag was induced in 2-dimensional unsteady incompressible potential flow. The numerical results show that the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil with flapping and pitching at the same time are illustrated. Especially the mean lift coefficient became smaller, but drag coefficient became larger.

  • In order to provide a complementary perspective to the effects of the maneuvering motions on the unsteady propeller performance, the numerical simulation of the flow field of the hull-rudder- propeller system is performed by Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Naiver-Stokes (URANS) method. Firstly, the flow fields around the submarine model without the presence of propeller in straight ahead motion and the steady diving maneuvers with submergence rudder deflections of 4°, 8° and 12° are predicted numerically. The non-uniformity characteristic of the nominal wake field is exacerbated with the increase submergence rudder angle. Then the flow field around the SUBOFF-G submarine fitted with the 4381 propeller is simulated. The axial, transverse and vertical unsteady propeller forces in different maneuvering conditions are compared. In general, as the submarine maneuvers more violently, the harmonic amplitudes of the unsteady force at the 2BPF and 3BPF increased more significantly than that at BPF.

  • It is difficult to avoid measurement errors caused by the shading effect of the meteorological tower, which is used for wind resource assessment according to the IEC Standard. This paper presents a validation of the computational flow analysis results by comparing the results with the wind tunnel experiment conducted for Reynolds numbers in the $10^4$ to $10^5$ range, for the preparation of a database for use in an automatic method of correcting met-tower shading errors. A three-dimensional simulation employing the MP (Modified Production) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model predicted a wind speed deficit in the wake region according to minimum wind speed ratio, within an MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 2.4%.

  • Since it is important to understand the bio-climatic change in Seoul for ecological city planning in the future, this paper gives an overview on bio-climate analysis of urban environments at Seoul. We analyzed its characteristics in recent years using the observations of 24 of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). In urbanization, Seoul metropolitan area is densely populated and is concentrated with high buildings. This urban activity changes land covering, which modifies the local circulation of radiation, heat and moisture, precipitation and creating a specific climate. Urban climate is evidently manifested in the phenomena of the increase of the air temperature, called urban heat Island and in addition urban sqall line of heavy rain. Since a city has its different land cover and street structure, these form their own climate character such as climate comfort zone. The thermal fold in urban area such as the heat island is produced by the change of land use and the air pollution that provide the bio-climate change of urban eco-system. The urban wind flow is the most important climate element on dispersion of air pollution, thermal effects and heavy shower. Numerical modeling indicates that the bio-climatic transition of wind wake in urban area and the dispersion of the air pollution by the simulations of the wind variation depend on the urban land cover change. The winds are separately simulated on small and micro-scale at Seoul with two kinds of kinetic model, Witrak and MUKLIMO.

  • De-NOx facility using Selective Catalytic Reduction method is the most widely applied one that removes NOx from flue gas emitted from combustion facility such as boiler for power generation engine incinerator etc. Reductant $NH_3\;or\;NH_4OH$ is sprayed into flue gas to convert NOx into $H_2O$ and $N_2.$ Good mixing between flue gas and $NH_3$ is the most important factor to increase reduction in catalytic layer and to reduce unreacted NH3 slip. Therefore the development of mixer device for mixing effect is one of the important part for SCR facility. Objectives of this study are to investigate the relation between flow and concentration field by observation at the wake of delta-wing type mixer. At the first stage qualitative measurement of flow field is conducted by flow visualization using laser light sheet in lab. scale wind tunnel. Also we have conducted the quantitative analysis by comparing flow field measurement using LDV with numerical simulation. On the basis of qualitative and quantitative analysis we investigate the dis-tribution of flow and concentration in flow model facility. The results of an experimental and compu-tational examination of the vortex structures shed from delta wing type vortex generator having $40^{\circ}$ angle of attack are presented, The effects of vortex structure on the gas mixing is discussed, too.

  • The aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of discharge grille of outdoor unit of air-conditioner was investigated in this study. Discharge grille is one of outdoor unit's important parts to affect the flow rate and Overall Sound Pressure Level(OSPL). New type of discharge grille was suggested based on the results of numerical simulation. To simulate the flow pattern near the propeller fan, commercial flow solver FLUENT was used. Sliding mesh method was used for rotating propeller fan and initial condition for unsteady model was calculated by Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) method. To minimize the interaction noise between fan blade wake and discharge grille, new discharge grille has radial rib which is aligned with trailing edge of fan blade. And inclined radial rib was adopted for reducing flow rate drop in discharge grille. The optimization of inclined angle of radial grille was performed experimentally.

  • An Eulerian-Lagrangin approach is used to compute particle dispersion from a power plant chimney. For air flow, three-dimensional incompressible filtered Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a subgrid-scale model by integrating the Newton's equation, while the dispersed phase is solved in a Lagrangian framework. The velocity ratios between crossflow and a jet of 0.455 and 0.727 are considered. Flow fields and particle distribution of both cases are evaluated and compared. When the velocity ratio is 0.455, it demonstrates a Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex structure above the chimney caused by the interaction between crossflow and a jet, whereas the other case shows flow structures at the top of the chimney collapsed by fast crossflow. Also, complex wake structures cause different particle distributions behind the chimney. The case with the velocity ratio of 0.727 demonstrates strong particle concentration at the vortical region, whereas the case with the velocity ratio of 0.455 shows more dispersive particle distribution. The simulation result shows similar tendency to the experimental result.

  • This paper introduces a BEM/RANS interactive scheme to predict the contra-rotating propeller (CRP) performance. In this scheme, the forward propeller and the aft propeller are handled by two separate BEM models while the interactions between them are achieved by coupling them with a RANS solver. By using the body force field and mass source field to represent the propeller in the RANS model, the number of RANS cells and the number of required RANS iterations reduce significantly. The method provides an efficient way to predict the effective wake, the steady/unsteady propeller forces, etc. The BEM/RANS interactive scheme is first applied to a CRP in both an axisymmetric manner and a non-axisymmetric manner. Results are shown in good agreement with the experimental data in moderate to high advance ratios. It is proved that the difference between the axisymmetric scheme and the non-axisymmetric scheme mainly comes from the non-axisymmetric bodies. It is also found that the error is larger at lower advance ratios. Possible explanations are given. Finally, some additional cases are tested which justifies that the non-axisymmetric BEM/RANS scheme is able to handle a podded CRP working at given inclination angles.
