An experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergence flow. In this paper, stabilization characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergence angle of duct and position of a circular cylinder. The fuel used is a commercial grade gaseous propane injected by two slit of rod. It is found that the positive pressure gradient greatly influences the eddy structure behind the rod. and that two different kinds of combustion patterns exist at the blowoff limit depending on the divergent angle of duct. They are distinguished by their wake structures: one associated with Karman vortex shedding, the other without it. Also, the blowoff velocity in the former is found to be higher than in the later.

A study on tidal turbine using CFD simulation has been an economical and reliable method. However, large flow fields with multi-turbine arrays require high computer performance. Actuator disc theory therefore is widely applied. Actuator disc is the concept that imitates actual turbine by means of an energy absorption disc which has the same dimension and characteristics. Turbines installed in array may have disturbance effects on one another. Thus, the subject of this study is to analyze the far wake of these tidal turbines and compare to single turbine case. The main objects are to analyze two turbines positioned longitudinally at different spaces.
The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model lead-lag in flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various lead-lag motion and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle(20o). To describe a motion profile of wing tip such as elliptic, line and circle, the phase difference of flapping and lead-lag motion was changed. And the effects of the motion profile on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.

Energy-saving devices for 317K VLCC have been developed from a propulsion standpoint. Two ESD candidates were designed via computational tools. The first device WAFon composes of flow-control fins adapted for the ship wake to reduce the loss of rotational energy. The other is WAFon-D, which is a WAFon with a duct to obtain additional thrust and to distribute the inflow velocity on the propeller plane uniform. After selecting the candidates from the computed results, the speed performances were validated with model-tests. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the ESDs may be found in improved hull and propulsive efficiencies through increased wake fraction.

High-rise buildings constructed adjacent to low-rise structures experience frequent damage caused by the associated strong wind. This study aimed to implement a standard evaluation of the wind environment and airflow characteristics around high-rise apartment blocks using wind tunnel tests (WTT) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The correlation coefficient between the CFD and wind tunnel results ranged between 0.6-0.8. Correlations below 0.8 were due to differences in the wake flow area range generated behind the target building according to wind direction angle and the effect of the surrounding buildings. In addition, a difference was observed between the average velocity ratio of the wake flow wind measured by the WTT and by the CFD analysis. The wind velocity values of the CFD analysis were therefore compensated, and, consequently, the correlations for most wind angles increased.
Computational methods based on the solution of the flow model are widely used for the analysis of lowspeed, inviscid, attached-flow problems. Most of such methods are based on the implementation of the internal Dirichlet boundary condition. In this paper, the time-domain panel method uses the piecewise constant source and doublet singularities. The present method utilizes the time-stepping loop to simulate the unsteady motion of the rotary wing blade. The wake geometry is calculated as part of the solution with no special treatment. To validate the results of aerodynamic characteristics, the typical blade was chosen such as, Caradonna-Tung blade and present results were compared with the experimental data and the other numerical results in the single blade condition and two blade condition. This isolated rotor blade model consisted of a two bladed rotor with untwisted, rectangular planform blade. Computed flow-field solutions were presented for various section of the blade in the hovering mode.
In this study, we investigate the effects of slots installed on the tip of a rotor blade on aerodynamic characteristics. The slots weaken the strength and spatial coherence of the tip vortex at early vortex age and accelerate the dissipation of the generated tip vortex. Accordingly, the turbulence intensity of the rotor wake is reduced at both near and far wake, which leads to a reduction in broadband noise. Tonal noise is also reduced by mitigation of tip vortices, but tonal noise reduction is limited to a narrower range of azimuths than broadband noise due to the extinction of tip vortices. In addition, slots reduce both mean thrust and thrust fluctuations. Reduction in thrust fluctuations leads to a reduction in blade loading noise, resulting in a reduction in tonal noise.
The heat generated in an induction motor is mostly dissipated through the frame. The study on the heat transfer characteristics of a newly manufactured finless TEFC(Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) induction motor showed/that it had an unsuitable structure in view of the heat transfer. The angle of the cooling air flow was very large and the ribs disturbed the air flow and partially generated the wake region on the frame. In the wake region the temperature was very high. Thus the heat transfer coefficients were lower than those of the frame with fins. Also was investigated the heat transfer characteristics of the motor frame by installing various guide vanes in the fan-side end cap. An optimum heat transfer case was found and the average heat transfer coefficient of the frame was 70% higher and the average coil temperature measured by the resistance method was 9 deg. C lower than that of the frame which had no guide vanes.
The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine the complex 3-D stall phenomena on the rotor blade and wake distribution of the wind turbine. The flow characteristics of 500kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) are compared with the calculated 3-D stall phenomena and wake distribution. We used the CFX-TASCflow to predict flow and power characteristics of the wind turbine. The CFD results are somewhat consistent with the BEM (Blade Element Momentum) results. And, the rotational speed becomes faster, the 3-D stall region becomes smaller. Moreover, the pressure distribution on the pressure side that directly gets the incoming wind grows high as it goes toward the tip of the blade. The pressure distribution on the blade's suction side tells us that the pressure becomes low in the leading edge of the airfoil as it moves from the hub to the tip. However, we are not able to precisely predict on the power coefficient of the rotor blade at the position of generating complex 3-D stall region.
An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using the constant temperature anemometer and through flow visualization. Previous report(Boo et al., 2001) shows that there are three different modes in vortex shedding behavior. This paper is focused on the identification of the physical reasons why the difference iss occured in vortex shedding. The through flow velocity crossing fins decreases as increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch mainly due to the flow resistence. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by velocity distribution around fin tube, especially by the velocity gradient. The velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Those differences in velocity gradients generate different vortex shedding mechanism.
