  • This study was to assess the effect of consolidation for intension measures of stone cultural heritage using artificially weathered stones. We have prepared four kinds of stones (Gyeongju Namsan Granite, Iksan Granite, Yeongyang Sandstone, Jeongseon Marble), and manufactured fresh, weathered and highly weathered stone samples by thermal shock for each rock type. The samples were treated with three consolidants (Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300, 1T1G) by three methods {immersion, capillary rise (partial immersion), spray}, and tested for weight, porosity, ultrasonic velocity, Equotip hardness and color before and after treatment. As a result, the effect of consolidation was widely influenced by porosity and treatment methods. Wacker OH 100 was shown the highest consolidation effect in almost every stone sample.

  • We studied to select the best consolidant and water-repellentsynthesis resins on the weathering caused by many factors(temperature variation, ultraviolet light, moisture, salt etc.) for using internal or external of stone cultural properties. The specimen〔granite(Pochon-suk), granite(Hwangdung-suk), tuff(in Kyong-ju)〕was treated by Wacker OH, Wacker OH 100, Wacker 290L, D.W.R, SS-101and tested in the five kinds of test and analyzed. After all test, D.W.R is the excellent results on the measuring of the property of matter. Especially, water-repellent efficiency is the best.

  • Stone cultural heritages are mostly situated in field, so they are damaged from mechanical, chemical and biological weathering, and their degree of strength is also weaken. Therefore, the scientific conservation of the stone cultural heritages are necessary in order to the long-term maintenance and safety conservation. In this study, we attempt to estimate on the field application of consolidants which are Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300 and 1T1G according to the quality of the rocks. Based on the ultrasonic velocity, conditions of weathering damage before treatment are mainly ranked completely weathering condition (CW) or partly highly weathering condition (HW). After the first treatment, weathering damage conditions are changed by the high weathering condition (HW). These results shows that the internal pores of stone are filled with consolidant materials, so average ultrasonic velocities increases after treatment. And Remmers KSE 300 which is consolidant material is highest rate of increase of average ultrasonic velocities.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the efficiency of ethylsilicate consolidants on sandstone according to its weathering state for an appropriate application to stone cultural heritage in Yeongyang area. Yeongyang area had sandstone and conglomeratic sandstone cultural heritages which needed conservation intervention due to granular disintegration and scaling on their surface. Hyeonri Three-storied Pagoda having typical stone materials in this area was investigated for the analyses of the material and deterioration. And both in-situ and laboratory applications of consolidants were conducted to the outcrop which had the same characteristics of rock type and weathering grade. As a result of the application, it was concluded that Wacker OH 100 and Remmers 300 showed the most appropriate consolidating effect, and Remmers 300 was the most effective to strengthen the loosen and granular-disintegrated surface of the sandstone.

  • Stereo-Microscope observation, ultrasonic velocity, shore hardness and standard color measurement performed for studies of physical characterization of Namsan granite after treated with consolidants. The consolidants used in experiment are 35wt% Silicate Nonparticle/100%1T1G (Nonparticle), 3%POSS-SO1455/97%1T1G(3%POSS1455), POSS-SO1458/97%1T1G (3%POSS1458), 3%7nm/97%1T1G(3%7nm), 3%16nm/97%1T1G(3%16nm), 3% 40nm/97%1T1G(3%40nm) develop with Sejong university, and Wacker Silres BS OH-100, Unil Sandsteinfestiger OH-100. The color of rock surface is darker than original one but similar to original samples with time, and ultrasonic velocity and shore hardness increased with after consolidant treatment.

  • This study was experimented on accelerated weathering test using salt and freeze-thaw to prove effects of consolidants and consolidation for stone cultural heritage. The samples used four kinds of stones (Gyeongju Namsan Granite, Iksan Granite, Yeongyang Sandstone and Jeongseon Marble) which to distributed by three type of weathering grade (Fresh, Weathered Stone and Highly Weathered Stone) added for thermal treatment. The samples were treated with three consolidants (Wacker OH 100, Remmers KSE 300 and 1T1G), and tested by 500 cycles with freezing-thawing and 50 cycles of salt weathering test. As a results of freezing-thawing test, the crack and destruction occurred from some samples. And total immersed samples maintained effect of consolidation to 200 cycles. Also, The rock particle was fall off and gradually destructed by salts weathering test. The consolidated sample relatively had fewer changes by the weathering than not treated sample. The sprayed sample had not continuous effect on weathering.
