  • Researches to determine the infectious status on the pancreatic fluke, Eurytrema pancreaticum(Janson 1889) Looss, 1907, were made into several slaughter hauses at four different districts through seven years from 1963 to 1969. The infection rate showed 2962 positive of 5974 heads (49.6%) of cattle at the Seoul first slaughter hause in Seoul, 881 positive of 1021 heads (86.3%) in Cheju, and six(6) positive of 56 heads (11.1%) at Suwon, 58 positive of 306 heads(19.0%)at Joenju. The infection rate 53.1%, (2907 positive heads of total 7357 heads exammed) is the representative infection rate at the cattle eurytremiasis in Korea. It showed little variation through a year and was increased as compared with those of the past period, from 1915 to 1945. Fecal examinations in order to find out the local distribution of the pancreatic fluke were conducted on cattle, sheep, and goats raised in four districts, showing two(2) of 269 heads (0.7%) in Kyonggi-do, 41 of 212 heads (19.3%) in Cheju-do, and negative in both Chungnam-do and Joenbuk-do. When an artificial infection wss performed on rabbits and goats with metacercaria of the pancreatic fluke, Parenchyma of their pancreas were degenerated and the ducts were dilated. When cattle and sheep were infected naturally, the pancreatic ducts were also dilated, the wall was thickened, and adenomatous and epithelial hyperplasia was appeared. The conclusion, putting the foregoing pathological changes, has been arrived at chronic hyperplastic pancreatitis in the eurytremiasis of cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits.

  • In this paper, we consider a joint optimization of transmitter and receiver in additive cyclostationary noise with zero forcing criterion. We assume that the period of the cyclostationary noise is the same as the inverse of the symbol transmission rate and that the noise has a positive-definite autocorrelation function. The data sequence is modeled as a wide-sense stationary colored random process and the channel is modeled as a linear time-invariant system with a frequency selective impulse response. Under these assumptions and a constraint on the average power of the transmitted signal, we derive the optimum transmitter and receiver waveforms that jointly minimizes the mean square error with no intersymbol interference. The simulation results show that the proposed system has a better BER performance than the systems with receiver only optimization and the systems with no transmitter and receiver optimization.

  • In this study, we designed a method to manufacture elevated fermented green tea by using Monascus pilosus, which is known as a functional microbe, and observe its antioxidant abilities and quality characteristics. The water-soluble substance (WSS) content of the fermented tea by M. pilosus (FTM) was lower than that of the non-fermented tea (NFT), although the alcohol-insoluble substance (AIS) content of the FTM was higher than that of NTM. On the other hand, the fractionated distilled water-soluble polysaccharide (DWSP), CDTA-soluble polysaccharides (CDSP), sodium carbonate-soluble polysaccharide (SCSP) and KOH soluble hemicellulose (HC) obtained from the AIS of the FTM was markedly higher than that of NFT. In the antioxidant parameters, the electron donating ability of all fractions, except HC, extracted from FTM was higher than that of NFT, and iron chelating ability of all fractions, except CDSP, extracted from FTM was higher than that of NFT. Whereas the DWSP and SCSP obtained from the FTM were higher than that of NFT, the activity of the HC fraction from both NFT and the FTM could not be detected. In addition, the xanthin oxidase (XO) inhibitory activities of the DWSP, CDSP and the SCSP obtained from the NFT were significantly higher than that of FTM, the aldehyde oxidase (AO) inhibitory activities of the DWSP and SCSP extracted from the FTM were markedly higher than that of the NFT. Meanwhile, the acceptance of NFT and FTM had no significant difference, while the quality of aroma, taste and mouthfeel of the FTM was higher than that of NFT. These results suggest that the post-fermented tea by Monascus microorganisms may be responsible for functional components as well as contribute to the improvement of the tea quality.

  • Impaired glucose tolerance(IGT) & Impaired fasting glucose(IFG) were standardized in 1979 by the National Diabetes Data Group and the World Health Organization as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. The main clinical significance of IGT & IFG shows some risk factors on type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and component of the metabolic syndrome. In 1997, the American Diabetes Association(ADA) proposed the new classification and diagnostic criteria for diabetes, which wss striction on the diagnostic baseline of Diabetes from 140 mg/dl to 126 mg/dl. This is because that the early diagnosis and treatments can prevent chronic complications. In the oriental medicine, Gamiyookmigihwang-tang has been using for the treatments of Diabetes including IGT & IFG; however, there have not been enough studies about the effect of the glycemic control objectively. So clinical studies have been performed on a mild DM(Diabetes Mellitus) patient with IGT and IFG in order to investigate whether there is hypoglycemic effect of Gamiyookmigihwang-tang. Prior to the study, for two weeks fasting blood sugar(FBS) and postprandial 2hrs(PP2hrs) glucose were checked. in addition ECG, T-cholesterol, TG, HbA1c levels were measured; then, Gamiyookmigihwang-tang has administrated for 4 weeks. and FBS, PP2hrs, T-cholesterol, TG, HbA1c were measured again after the herb medicine treatment. FBS, PP2hrs glucose levels and other measuring levels (T-cholesterol, TG, HbA1c) were decreased by the administration of Gamiyookmigihwang-tang. Gamiyookmigihwang-tang has hypoglycemic effects on a mild DM patient with IGT and IFG.

  • Sodium arsenite (As) aqueous solution containing 4 ppm wss given to male rats for 15 days as drinking water. Electrophoretic pattern of liver cytosol from As-fed rats appeared to be significantly different from that of the control rats. Although the normal protein content of the cytosol fraction of As-fed rat liver was decreased, 8 stress proteins were increased. In liver cytosol fractions of As-treated rat, one kind of arsenic-binding substance (AsBS) was observed. Molecular weight of AsBS was identified to be 500 D and composition of amino acid was glycine, glutamic acid and cysteine. Glutathione (GSH) appeared to bind to arsenic and GSH-As complex showed the same mobility as AsBS on gel filtration chromatography. GSH conjugated As prevented As from inhibiting respiration, conformational change and swelling-contration of mitochondria. According to the above results. it is concluded that in vfuo treated arsenic stimulated synthesis of stress protein, and arsenic-binding substance might be glutathione and have a protective role against arsenic toxicity.

  • Objective: The objective of the present experiment was to construct self-draining beds to keep surface bedding materials clean and dry for beef cattle comfort in a temperate climate. Methods: In Experiment 1, a self-draining bed was covered with sand at depths of 10 cm (S-10a), 15 cm (S-15), and 20 cm (S-20) respectively. In Experiment 2, self-draining beds of different sizes were covered with 10 cm of sand (S-10b) and wood shavings (WS) at depths of 15 cm and 20 cm (WS-15 and WS-20). Fifteen cattle were engaged to evaluate the comfort of self-draining beds covered with different bedding materials. Results: No cattle lay in the feed alley and cattle spent more time lying on S-10a than S-15 or S-20 in Experiment 1 (p<0.01). No difference in lying time was detected between S-15 and S-20 (p>0.05). In Experiment 2, no cattle selected the feed alley as the lying area. Cattle preferred WS-15 as the lying area and time spent lying on WS-20 was slightly higher than on S-10b (p<0.05). Feces weight was higher in the feed alley than in the different bedding areas in both Experiments 1 and 2 (p<0.01). Conclusion: Sand-bedding depth at 10 cm and WSs at 15 cm above the self-draining bed can provide for the lying comfort of beef cattle. Design of a special feed alley to hold most of the feces to keep bedding materials clean and dry is desirable for organic beef cattle in a loose barn.

  • Since arterial disease in the upper extremity is less common than that in the lower extremity, experimental and numerical investigations related to upper extremity have been rarely performed. We created a three-dimensional model of the arteries, larger than approximately 1 mm, in a Korean adult's left hand (from brachial to digital arteries), from 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. For the first time, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic method was employed to investigate blood flow velocity, blood pressure variation, and wall shear stress (WSS) on this complicated artery system. Investigations were done on physiological blood flows near the branches of radial and deep palmar arch arteries, and ulnar and superficial palmar arch arteries. The flow is assumed to be laminar and the fluid is assumed to be Newtonian, with density and viscosity properties of plasma.

  • In this study, blood flow in a carotid artery supplying blood to the human's brain has been numerically simulated to find out how the blood flow affects the genesis and the growth of atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. Velocity Profiles and hemodynamic parameters have been investigated for the carotid arteries with three different stenoses under physiological flow condition. Blood has been treated as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. To model the shear thinning properties of blood for non-Newtonian fluid, the Carreau-Yasuda model has been employed. The result shows that the wall shear stress(WSS) increases with the development of stenosis and that the wall shear stress in Newtonian fluid is highly evaluated compared with that in non-Newtonian Fluid. Oscillatory shear index has been employed to identify the time-averaged reattachment point and this point is located farther from the stenosis for Newtonian fluid than for non-Newtonian fluid The wall shear stress gradient(WSSG) along the wall has been estimated to be very high around the stenosis region when stenosis is developed much and the WSSG peak value of Newtonian fluid is higher than that of non-Newtonian fluid.

  • 25 local districts in Seoul have been running Waste Transfer Stations(WTSs) to secure regional collection bases, to connect between collection systems and waste treatment systems, and to commit various pre-screening of mixed wastes. There were, however, few previous researches to define how much WTSs are beneficial to waste collection system at least in Korea. So this study analyzed costs of waste collection systems with varied haul distances from waste sources(WSs) to WTS or building types of WTSs. Major results showed that the closer WTS is to WS or the cheaper the construction cost of WTS is, the lower the cost of waste collection system is. There was an additional result that WTS system with more than 15 km of total haul distance might be useful in Seoul and encapsulation of WTS in building or underground will make effective total haul distances longer up to 35km.
