  • The weight of soundproof panels is an important consideration in the design of both panels and supporting structures. The soundproof panels in noise barriers have to carry their net weight in wet condition respectively the reduced weight and also the weight of the above installed panels in wet condition without showing any failing. In this study, a compression test and a flexural test were performed to determine the maximum vertical load which a wood plastic composites (WPC) panel can bear. In addition, the maximum loading number and height of WPC panels in a noise barrier were calculated for full, simple, and continuous support conditions.

  • Wood composite, could generally be made from very fine wood powder(<150 mesh) because more large size of wood particle had much less plasticity compared of polymer. To make more high plasticity of relatively large size of wood particle, wood particles were chemically modified with some reagent for acetylation and esterification, etc. WPC(wood plastic composite) was prepared with chemically modified wood particles and the mechanical properties of WPC were evaluated. WPC of esterified wood with maleic anhydride shows the highest level in tensile strength and breaking elongation.

  • Developed in this paper is a feature based modeling system for the design of welded plat construction(WPC) which is composed of flat or bended plates represented as reference plane with a constant thickness. First, the necessity and the characteristics of the modeing system for WPC as compared with the assembly of mechanical parts are investigated. Secondly, feature library for the assembly of WPC is shown which contains several types of features like joint feature, groove feature, material feature, and precision feature. Thirdly, the assembly procedures are presented which mainly consist of both the assembly transformation and the correct assembly checking. Fourthly, weld lines of the assembled WPC are defined so that those can be used in the process planning or the manufacturing stage. Finally, a prototype by a geometric modeling software Pro/Engineer, a graphic software GL(Graphic Library), and C language on a CAD workstation IRIS.

  • Wood-plastic composite (WPC) is a promising and sustainable material, and refers to a combination of wood and plastic along with some binding (adhesive) materials. In comparison to pure wood material, WPCs are in general have advantages of being cost effective, high durability, moisture resistance, and microbial resistance. The properties of WPCs come directly from the concentration of different components in composite; such as wood flour concentration directly affect mechanical and physical properties of WPCs. In this study, wood powder concentration in WPC was determined by Fourier transform near-infrared (FT-NIR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The reflectance spectra from WPC in both powdered and tableted form with five different concentrations of wood powder were collected and preprocessed to remove noise caused by several factors. To correlate the collected spectra with wood powder concentration, multivariate calibration method of partial least squares (PLS) was applied. During validation with an independent set of samples, good correlations with reference values were demonstrated for both FT-NIR and FT-IR data sets. In addition, high coefficient of determination (${R^2}_p$) and lower standard error of prediction (SEP) was yielded for tableted WPC than powdered WPC. The combination of FT-NIR and FT-IR spectral region was also studied. The results presented here showed that the use of both zones improved the determination accuracy for powdered WPC; however, no improvement in prediction result was achieved for tableted WPCs. The results obtained suggest that these spectroscopic techniques are a useful tool for fast and nondestructive determination of wood concentration in WPCs and have potential to replace conventional methods.

  • Polypropylene as a matrix has been used for wood polymer composites(WPC). In preparing WPC, the coupling agent, Polypropylene grafted Maleic Anhydride(PP-G-MA) was used in order to obtain a good interfacial bonding force between matrix and fillers and dispersion of wood powders. In this study, the effects of wood powder contents and water absorption on the mechanical properties were experimentally investigated. The tensile strength and flexural strength of composites reached its peak value when the wood powder content was around 60 wt%. However, the peak value of the impact was observed about 30 wt% of wood powder content. The tensile strength and flexural strength increase with increasing the wood power contents. But the impact strength decrease with increasing the wood powder contents. The slight change was observed with the water absorption in the WPC. The optimal condition of the compositions such as Anti-oxidant and UV stabilizers for the outdoor application was suggested in this research.

  • Wood plastic composite (WPC) is a green composite made of wood flour and thermoplastics to provide better performance by removing the defects of both wood and plastics. However, relatively low thermal stability and poor fire resistance of wood and plastics included in WPC have been still issues in using WPC as a building material for interior applications. This study investigated the effect of environmentally-friendly flame retardants (EFFRs) on the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and water absorption properties of wood flour (WF)/talc/polypropylene (PP) composites in comparison with neat PP. The whole EFFRs-filled WF/talc/PP composites showed higher values in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength compared to neat PP. In thermal properties, aluminum hydroxide (AH)-filled composite showed a $36^{\circ}C$ reduction in maximum thermal decomposition temperature ($T_{max}$) compared to neat PP, but magnesium hydroxide (MH) played an important role in improving thermal stability of filled composite by showing the highest $T_{max}$. From this research, it can be said that MH has potentials in reinforcing PP-based WPCs with improvement of thermal stability.

  • To improve the bile salt and acid tolerance of probiotics against gastrointestinal stresses, we investigated the effects of soybean lecithin and whey protein concentrate (WPC) 80 on the bile salt tolerance of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei L9 using a single-factor methodology, which was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The survival rate of L. paracasei L9 treated with 0.3% (w/v) bile salt for 2.5 h, and combined with soybean lecithin or WPC 80, was lower than 1%. After optimization, the survival rate of L. paracasei L9 incubated in 0.3% bile salt for 2.5 h reached 52.5% at a ratio of 0.74% soybean lecithin and 2.54% WPC 80. Moreover, this optimized method improved the survival rate of L. paracasei L9 in low pH condition and can be applied to other lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains. Conclusively, the combination of soybean lecithin and WPC 80 significantly improved the bile salt and acid tolerance of LAB. Our study provides a novel approach for enhancing the gastrointestinal tolerance of LAB by combining food-derived components that have different properties.

  • Microbial exopolysaccharide (EPS) is a biothickener that can be added to a wide variety of food products, where it serves as a viscosifying, stabilizing, emulsifying, and gelling agent. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimum conditions of pH, incubation temperature, and whey protein concentration (WPC) for EPS production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595. We found that maximal EPS production was achieved at a pH of 5.5 and temperature of $37^{\circ}C$. At the same fermentation conditions, EPS production was affected by the addition of L. rhamnosus GG (a weak-EPS producer). After growth for 24 hr, total EPS production was $583{\pm}15.4mg/L$ in the single culture system, and $865{\pm}22.6\;mg/L$ in the co-culture system with L. rhamnosus GG. Based on the presence of WPC, EPS production dramatically increased from $583{\pm}15.4$ (under no WPC supplementation) to $1,011{\pm}14.7\;mg/L$ (under supplementation with 1.0% WPC). These results suggest that WPC supplementation and the co-culture systems coupled with small portions of weak-EPS producing strain can play an important role in the enhancement of EPS production.
