  • In this work, the effects of chemical treatment of polyimide films were studied by FT-IR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angles. The adhesion characteristics of the films were also investigated in the peel strengths of polyimide/aluminum films. The increases of surface functional groups of KOH-treated polyimide films were greatly correlated with the polar component of surface free energy. The peel strength of polyimides to metal substrate was also greatly enhanced by increasing the KOH treatment time, which can be attributed to the formation of polar functional groups on the polyimide surfaces, resulting in enhancement of the work of adhesion between polymer film and metal plate.

  • Nano adhesion between SPM (scanning probe microscope) tips and $DDPO_{4}$ (dodecylphosphoric acid ester) and $ODPO_{4}$ (octadecylphosphoric acid ester) SAM (self-assembled monolayer) was experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes with the applied normal load. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM were formed on TiMe and TiOx surfaces. TiMe and TiOx were coated on the Si wafer by ion sputtering. Adhesion and friction of $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM surfaces were compared with those of OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM and DLC surfaces. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM converted the TiMe and TiOx surfaces to be hydrophobic. When the surface was hydrophobic, the adhesion and friction forces were found lower than those of bare surfaces. Work of adhesion was also discussed to explain how the surface was converted into hydrophobic. Results also showed that tribological characteristics of $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ had good properties in the adhesion, friction, wetting angle and work of adhesion. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM could be one of the candidates for the bio-MEMS elements.

  • Studies on some biodegradable polymers and other materials such as hydrogels have shown the promising potential for a variety of surgical applications. Postoperative adhesion caused by the natural consequence of surgical wound healing results in problems of the repeated surgery. Recently, scientists have developed absorbable anti-adhesion barriers that can protect a tissue from adhesion in case they are in use; however, they are dissolved when no longer needed. Although these approaches have been attempted to fulfill the criteria for adhesion prevention, none can perfectly prevent adhesions in all situations. Overall of this work, a new method to fabricate an anti-adhesion membrane using biodegradable polymer and hydrogel has been developed. The ideal barrier for preventing postoperative adhesion would have the following properties; it should be (i) resorbable (ii) non-reactive (iii) easy to apply (iv) capable of being fixed in position. In order to fulfill these properties, we adopted solid freeform fabrication method combined with surface modification which includes the hydrogel coating, therefore, inner or outer structure can be controlled and the property of anti adhesion can be improved.

  • In this work, diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are coated onto plasma nitrided AISI 4140 steel by DC-pulsed PECVD. One problem of DLC films is their very poor adhesion on steel substrates. The purpose of the nitriding was to enhance adhesion between the substrate and the DLC films. The white layer formation is avoided. Plasma nitriding increased adhesion from 8 N for DLC coating to 25 N for duplex coating. Duplex plasma nitriding/DLC coating was proven to be more effective in improving the adhesion. The purpose of the bond layer was to enhance adhesion between the substrate and the DLC films.

  • Form-work is a must for construction work. In order to secure the best condition of the form surface and to increase the number of times, the form releasing agent is applied during the process of the form-work. The base oil of the form release agent which has been used already uses the oil which directly or indirectly affects the natural environment and the concrete. In this study, the basic study on the form release agent for concrete was carried out only for the effect of adhesion. The adhesive force of the tile is measured by the mortar to determine the change of the releasing agent and the adhesive strength.

  • This work was conducted to investigate on the effect of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin viscosity on plywood adhesion. The viscosity of UF resin was controlled either by adjusting the condensation reaction during its synthesis to obtain different target viscosities (100, 200 and 300 mPa.s) at two levels of formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios (1.0 and 1.2) or by adding different amounts (10, 20 and 30%) of wheat flour into the resins for the manufacture of plywood. When the viscosity of UF resin increased by the condensation reaction, the adhesion strength of plywood bonded with UF resin of 1.2 F/U mole ratio consistently increased, while those bonded with the 1.0 F/U mole ratio resin slightly decreased, suggesting a difference in the adhesion in plywood. However, the adhesion strength of plywood decreased as the viscosity increased by adding wheat flour, regardless of F/U mole ratio. The manipulation of UF resin viscosity by adjusting the condensation reaction was much more efficient than by adding wheat flour in improving the adhesion performance of plywood. These results indicated that a way of controlling the viscosity of UF resin adhesives has a great influence to their adhesion in plywood.

  • The carbon-based films have various properties, which have been widely applied in industrial application. However, it has critical drawback for poor adhesion between films and metal substrate. In the present work, we have deposited carbon-based films on injection mold steel by plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD). In order to improve adhesion, prior to film deposition, the substrate was nitriding-treated using PACVD. And its effect on the adhesion was investigated. Due to the pre-nitriding, the amorphous carbon nitride (a-CN:H) films presented 10 times higher adhesion (34.9 N) than that of un-nitirided. In addition, a friction coefficient was decreased from 0.29 to 0.15 for the amorphous carbon (a-C:H) due to improved adhesion. The obtained results demonstrated that pre-nitriding considerably improved the adhesion, and the relationship among adhesion, hardness, and surface roughness was discussed in detail.

  • Polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) is most used in piezoelectric polymer industry. Electrode effect on the electrical properties of PVDF has been investigated. al has been used due to fair adhesion for PVDF. Work function of metal plays an important role on the electrical properties of ferroelectrics for top and /or bottom electrode. However, Al has much lower work function than Pt or Au and so leakage current of Al/PVDF/Al may be large. Pt or Au has not been used for electrode of PVDF system due to poor adhesion. PVDF irradiated by Ar+ ion beam with O2 environment takes good adhesion to inert metal. Contact angle of PVDF to triple distilled water was reduced from 75$^{\circ}$ to 31$^{\circ}$ at 1$\times$1015 Ar+/cm2. Working pressure was 2.3$\times$10-4 Torr and base pressure was 5$\times$10-6 Torr. Pt was deposited by ion beam sputtering and thickness of pt film was about 1000$\AA$. in previous study, enhancing adhesion of Pt on PVDF was shown. in this study, effect of electrode on PVDF will be represented.

  • Polymer-cement composites are known repair materials. The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of various amount of dispersion of carboxylated styrene-butadience copolymer on the selected mechanical properties of polymer-cement concrete (PCC) and on its adhesion to ordinary concrete. The compressive, flexural and tensile strengths as well as frost resistance and fracture resistance of the composites are tested. Adhesion strength of PCC to ordinary concrete, as one of most important performance of good repair material is evaluated and analyzed using three test methods. The results obtained in standard pull-off test are compared with the two other tests. The first one, which is an adaptation of WST (wedge splitting test) characterizes crack propagation in the plane of bond created during repair. In the second test the resistance to shear is a measure of adhesion strength.

  • The mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (CFRPs) are greatly dependent on the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and the epoxy matrix. Introducing nanomaterial reinforcements into the interface is an effective approach to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CFRPs. The main purpose of this work was to introduce graphitic nanofiber (GNFs) between an epoxy matrix and carbon fibers to enhance interfacial properties. The composites were reinforced with various concentrations of GNFs. For all of the fabricated composites, the optimum GNF content was found to be 0.6 wt%, which enhanced the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and fracture toughness (KIC) by 101.9% and 33.2%, respectively, compared with those of neat composites. In particular, we observed a direct linear relationship between ILSS and KIC through surface free energy. The related reinforcing mechanisms were also analyzed and the enhancements in mechanical properties are mainly attributed to the interfacial interlocking effect. Such an effort could accelerate the conversion of composites into high performance materials and provide fundamental understanding toward realizing the theoretical limits of interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties.
