  • This paper presents a novel circular fractal ring monopole antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) hardware with dual band-notched properties. The proposed antenna consists of four crescent-shaped nested rings, a tapered feeding line at the front of the dielectric material, and a semicircular ground plane on the backside. In this design, the nested rings are used both as a radiation element and a band rejection element. The proposed antenna has a bandwidth of 9.03 GHz, which works efficiently in the range of 2.63 GHz-11.66 GHz with the dual notched bands of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) at 3.15 GHz-3.66 GHz and wireless local area network (WLAN) at 4.9 GHz-5.9 GHz, respectively. The antenna has a compact size of 20 mm × 30 mm × 1 mm (0.177 × 0.265 × 0.0084 λ0) and is implemented using a flame-retardant type 4 (FR4) material. It has a maximum gain of approximately 4 dB in its operating range, and experimental results support the simulation predictions with high accuracy. The findings of this study imply that the designed antenna can be utilized in UWB applications.

  • This paper presents a high Performance LNA based on InGaP/GaAs HBT for 5.4㎓ WAM band applications. During the past days, InGaP/GaAs HBT has been being used for mainly high power amplifiers, but InCaP/GaAs is recognized as a suitable device for RF single chip. At this point, the research about a high performance LNA based on InGaP/GaAs HBT must be preceded, and in this paper, a excellent linearity and noise characteristics LNA based on InGaP/GaAs HBT is desisted and fabricated. The LNA is integrated in new of 0.9${\times}$0.9$\textrm{mm}^2$ single chip with high Q spiral inductors and MIM capacitors. The proposed LNA is biased at current point for optimum noise figure and gain characteristics, futhermore, excellent linearity is achieved. The proposed LNA shows 13㏈ gain, 2.1㏈ noise figure, and excellent linearity in terms of IIP3 of 5.5㏈m.

  • This paper describes the design and fabrication of an MMIC variable gain LNA for 5GHz wireless LAN applications, using 0.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ gate length GaAs MESFET transistors. The advantages of high gain and low noise performance of E-MESFETS and excellent linear performance of D-MESFETS are combined as a cascode topology in this design. Behavioral model equations are derived from the MESFET nonlinear current voltage characteristics by using Turlington's asymptote method in a cascode configuration. Using the behavioral model equations, a 4${\times}$50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ E-MESFET as a common source amplifier and a 2${\times}$50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ D-MESFET as a common gate amplifier are determined for the cascode amplifier. The fabricated variable gain LNA shows a noise figure of 2.4dB, variable gain range of more than 17dB, IIP3 of -4.8dBm at 4.9GHz, and power consumption of 12.8mW.

  • Recently, the radio navigation method utilizing the GPS(Global Positioning System) satellite information is widely used as the method to measure the position of objects. As GPS applications become wider and fields based on various positioning information emerge, new methods for achieving higher accuracy are required. In the case of autonomous vehicles, the INS(Inertial Navigation System) using the IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit), and the DR(Dead Reckoning) algorithm using the in-vehicle sensor, are used for the purpose of preventing degradation of accuracy of the GPS and to measure the position in the shadow area. However, these positioning methods have many elements of problems due not only to the existence of various shaded areas such as building areas that are continually enlarged, tunnels, underground parking lots and but also to the limitations of accumulation-based location estimation methods that increase in error over time. In this paper, an efficient positioning method in a large underground parking space using Fingerprint method is proposed by placing the AP(Access Points) and directional antennas in the form of four anchors using WLAN, a popular means of wireless communication, for positioning the vehicle in the GPS shadow area. The proposed method is proved to be able to produce unchanged positioning results even in an environment where parked vehicles are moved as time passes.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented ubiquitous u-Health system using RFE and ZigBee. We made a wireless protocol Kit which combines RFE Tag recognition and ZigBee data communication capability. The software is designed and developed on the TinyOS. Wireless communication technologies which hold multi-protocol stacks with RFID and result in the wireless ubiquitous world could be Bluetooth, ZigBee, 802.11x WLAN and so on. The environments that the suggested u-Health system may be used is un-manned nursing, which would be utilized in dense sensor networks such as a hospital. The the size of devices with RFID and ZigBee will be so smaller and smaller as a bracelet, a wrist watch and a ring. The combined wireless RFID-ZigBee system could be applied to applications which requires some actions corresponding to the collected (or sensed) information in WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network) and/or WPAN(Wireless Person Area Network). The proposed ubiquitous u-Health system displays some text-type alert message on LCD which is attached to the system or gives voice alert message to the adequate node users. RFE will be used as various combinations with other wireless technologies for some application-specific purposes.

  • A Micorstrip Bandpass Filter Using DBRs for WLAN ($2.3{\sim}2.4GHz$) applications is designed and an EBG structure is employed in the ground plane of the filter to suppress the stopband responses of the filter. The number of DBRs is chosen as two in consideration of low insertion loss and small size of two filter. The center frequency of the filter to be designed is 2.35GHz and its bandwidth is 140MHz. The responses of two kinds of DBR filters (one with EBG and the other without EBG) are calculated and compared with the measurements. The experimental results are in good agreement with the calculations: The bandwidth and insertion loss of the filter with EBG structure are 3.8% and 1.7dB respectively, while those of the filter without EBG structure are 7% and 1.23dB. It is shown that the insertion loss of the filter is increased and its bandwidth is deceased due to the EBG structure. Also the stopband responses of the filters with EBG structures are shown to be much improved compared with those without EBG.

  • This paper suggests an improved system-level model of RF power amplifiers(PAs) including memory effects, and validates the suggested model by analyzing the power spectral density of the output signal with a predistortion linearizer. The original three-box(Wiener-Hammerstein) model uses input and output filters to capture RF frequency response of PAs. The adjacent spectral regrowth that occurs in three-box model can be perfectly removed by Hammerstein structure predistorter. However, the predistorter based on Hammerstein structure achieves limited performance in real PA applications due to other memory effects except RF frequency response. The spectrum of the output signal can be predicted accurately using the suggested model that changes a memoryless block in a three-box model with a memory polynomial. The proposed model accurately predicts the output spectrum density of PA with Hammerstein structure predistorter with less than 2 dB errors over ${\pm}30$ MHz adjacent channel ranges for IEEE 802.11 g WLAN signal.

  • In recent years, mobile healthcare systems that transfer patient data wirelessly have been used in the medical field. However, the current messages supported to patients are difficult to satisfy the specific patients, and there is a lack of healthcare systems to help manage patients with diabetes or pregnant women on a regular basis. In this regard, this paper demonstrates that the semantic-web service to which data transfer method, application framework and networking of WPAN are applied can be implemented. In addition, it suggests common data types to integrate data from a variety of sources and provides a common framework in which information on the Web can be shared and reused in applications, businesses and communities, etc. As an example, the healthcare monitoring that can manage healthcare for pregnant women, which includes confirmation of pregnancy, periodic health management, fetal movement, prenatal care and health-related knowledge, is proposed.
