  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment(WEEE or E-waste) is one of the fastest growing waste stream in Korea. The proper management of such equipment has become of major concern for solid waste professionals because of the large growth of the waste stream and the presence of a myriad of toxic materials in it. In this paper, in order to evaluate the economical value of the recycling metallic materials from the E-waste, big size electrical home appliances, small size electrical home appliances, end of life hand phone and PCB(printed circuit board) were reviewed.

  • In recent years, the global GEF(Green Energy Family) activities to preserve the global environment due to energy consumption have been implemented under the Kyoto Protocol for the Prohibition of Carbon Dioxide Emissions, RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive), and WEEE(Waste Electrical and Electronice Equipment) are required to collect waste for the purpose of minimizing waste by integrating lighting and communication. In this paper, we constructed a controller that can control the illumination of RGB LED module by using fuzzy inference system and checking environmental factors(Illumination, distance to the subject, etc.) using microprocessor in real time.

  • Air pollution problem has been one of the most urgent global environmental problems since UN Framework Convention on Climate Change accepted in Rio Conference, 1992. International environmental regulations of global community to reduce the green house gases have influenced the domestic environmental policies. International trends of environmental regulation are introduced in this paper.

  • The Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment commonly referred to as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS was adopted in February 2003 by the European Union. The RoHS directive took effect on 1 July 2006, and is required to be enforced and become law in each member state. This directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. It is closely linked with the waste electrical and electronic equipment directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which sets collection, recycling and recovery targets for electrical goods and is part of a legislative initiative to solve the problem of huge amounts of toxic e-waste.

The proper management of such equipment has become of major concern for solid waste professionals because of the large growth of the waste stream and the presence of a myriad of toxic materials with in it. In this paper in order to review the recycling system and recycling industries of the E-waste in Korea, the main frame concerning recycling of "Act on the Resources Recycling of Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment(WEEE) and End-of-life vehicles", recycling system, current recycling status, estimation of the E-waste generation, material flow of the E-waste, economics of PCB and recycling industries of the E-waste were surveyed.

  • The growing environmental regulation governs the use of lead by RoHS, WEEE, and then. The electronic industry is moving to replace Pb-bearing solder with Pb-free solder. To use the Pb-free solder, microelectronic industry needs consequently the new reliability appraisal such as the packaging for high temperature process, various mechanical change caused by new solder, and the development of Pb-free sloder for long life of product. The evaluation of solder bar and mechanical properties of joint were performed compared with international standard, and new appraisal standard was established. The solderability and spread ability of Sn-0.7Cu solder material showed up to the standard. Shear test of solder joint using by the solder resulted that the shear strengths after thermal shock or after aging were not much lower than the shear strength of as-soldered and that they were also up to the standard.

  • Most world-leading companies are aware that Environment and Health and Safety Issues are critical to the product quality and sustainable growth of their company. Environment-friendly efforts are seen in almost all aspects of business operations in an advanced nation. The Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR) and EU Directive on Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment(WEEE) attempt to tackle the growing quantity of WEEE by making producers responsible for the costs of the collection and recycling of their products at the End-of-Life(EOL). To implement the RFID-based integration system for EOL household electric appliances, such as washing machines and refrigerators, we analyzed the process of collecting, recovering, and recycling the EOL products returned from the distribution points. Furthermore, we proposed a soon-to-be process using the RFID-based integration system in the metropolitan recycling center(MRC). This soon-to-be process model is composed of RFID tags, readers, ALEs, applications and several devices. Through the introduction of the RFID-based integration system, we are expecting to see increasing traceability and real-time management for EOL products from customers, and also improvements in valuable reusable materials(VRM) produced from recycling processes.

  • Concerns on environmental issues and global warming are increasing worldwide. Environmental regulations such as Tokyo Protocol, RoHS, WEEE are also getting harder and harder and used as trade barriers. Different from other manufacturing industries, information and communication industry is basically environment friendly-low emission of harmful materials and little consumption of energy. But information and communication industry can contribute to world environment by recycle articles in disuse and properly process discarded trash. Furthermore, by using more renewable energy, it can reduce the $CO_2$ emission, one of the major the green house gas.
