About the Location of Base Stations for a UMTS System: Analytical Study and Simulations

  • One of the first decisions that a radio network designer must take is the location of base stations and the distance between them in order to give the best coverage to a region and, possibly, to reduce deployment costs. In this paper, the authors give an insight to this matter by presenting a possible solution to a real problem: Planning the base stations layout for a universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) in the city of Barcelona. At the basis of this problem, there is the interdependence between coverage and capacity in a wideband-code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system, which is a new element in the planning of BS layout for mobile communications. This aspect has been first treated with an analytical study of the cell coverage range for a specific environment and service. The achieved results have been checked with the help of snapshot simulations together with a geographical information system (GIS) tool incorporated in the simulator that allows to perform analysis and to visualize results in a useful way. By using the simulator, it is also possible to study a more complex environment, that of a set of base stations providing multiple services to a large number of users.

USN기반의 차량용 스마트 안전장치의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of Smart Car Safety Device Based on USN)

  • 유비쿼터스 사회(Ubiquitous Society)로의 진입에 발맞추어 USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) 기반의 인간 중심적 편의 시스템에 관한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그 중 대형 시장을 갖는 차량 편의시설에 관한 연구는 지능형 차량 시스템(Intelligent Car System)을 중심으로 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 지능형 차량 시스템의 주요 연구는 자동 항법 장치, 사고 예방 장치, 자가 진단 시스템 등 탑승자의 편의성과 안전성을 중심으로 진행되었다. 그러나 탑승자의 사고 발생 시 응급 상황 처리를 위한 지원 시스템은 미미하다. 탑승자 부상으로 사고 신고를 하지 못할 경우, 사고지점 확인, 탑승자의 위급(현재) 상황, 부상 정보와 같은 정보를 얻을 수 없어 응급 상황 대처에 신속하지 못할 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 다양한 센서를 이용하여 차량의 정보를 수집하고, 사고 판단 시 차량 위치 정보, 탑승자 상황 정보를 응급 기관에 전달할 수 있는 차량용 스마트 안전장치를 설계 및 구현하였다. 테스트를 위해 Intel PXA255 MCU와 AM-3AXIS(3축 가속 센서), MDSM-1000A(지자기 센서), RX-M800S CDMA, GPS520, Alpha cam, Flex Sensor로 시스템을 제작하였으며 모의 도로 모형에서 테스트 하였다.

  • The objectives of this research have been focussed on 1) developing prediction techniques for the flash flood and landslide based on rainfall prediction data in agricultural area and 2) developing an integrated forecasting system for the abrupt disasters using USN based real-time disaster sensing techniques. This study contains following steps to achieve the objective; 1) selecting rainfall prediction data, 2) constructing prediction techniques for flash flood and landslide, 3) developing USN and communication network protocol for detecting the abrupt disaster suitable for rural area, & 4) developing mobile application and SMS based early warning service system for local resident and tourist. Local prediction model (LDAPS, UM1.5km) supported by Korean meteorological administration was used for the rainfall prediction by considering spatial and temporal resolution. NRCS TR-20 and infinite slope stability analysis model were used to predict flash flood and landslide. There are limitations in terms of communication distance and cost using Zigbee and CDMA which have been used for existing disaster sensors. Rural suitable sensor-network module for water level and tilting gauge and gateway based on proprietary RF network were developed by consideration of low-cost, low-power, and long-distance for communication suitable for rural condition. SMS & mobile application forecasting & alarming system for local resident and tourist was set up for minimizing damage on the critical regions for abrupt disaster. The developed H/W & S/W for integrated abrupt disaster forecasting & alarming system was verified by field application.
