Compressional wave velocity (Vp), shear wave velocity (Vs), elastic and physical properties, and electrical resistivity for two core sediments obtained from Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) were measured and computed. The sediments consist of homogeneous mud (mostly silt and clay) with shells and shell fragments. As a result, the mean grain size is uniform ($7.5-8.5{\Phi}$ throughout the core sediments. However, physical properties such as wet bulk density and porosity show slightly increasing and decreasing patterns with depth, compared to the mean grain size. The compressional (about 1475 m/s in average) and shear wave (about 60 m/s in average) velocities with depth accurately reflect the pattern of wet bulk density and porosity. Electrical resistivity is more closely correlated with compressional wave velocity than physical properties. The computed Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratios are relatively higher (more than 10) and lower (approximately 0.002) than Hamilton's (1979) data, respectively, suggesting the typical characteristics of soft and fully water-saturated marine sediments. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio in soft and unconsolidated sediments is not likely sufficient to examine lithology and sediment properties. Relationships between the elastic constant and physical properties are correlated well. The elastic constants (Poisson's ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus) given in this paper can be used to characterize soft marine sediments saturated with seawater.

To analyze the prediction of geological conditions and water-bearing zones, TSP was performed in the collapse zone of the fault zone. The results of the TSP were verified by comparing them to the face mapping results of the prediction zone. The rock quality prediction result of the TSP had an error of about 3 to 10 meters compared to the face mapping result, but the overall rock quality change and ground condition were analyzed to be relatively similar. In the water-bearing zones of the face mapping results, the Vp/Vs ratio ranges from 1.79 to 2.37 and the Poisson's ratio ranges from 0.27 to 0.39. In the sections other than the water-bearing zones, the Vp/Vs ratio ranges from 1.61 to 1.89, and the Poisson's ratio ranges from 0.19 to 0.3. As a result of analyzing the Vp/Vs ratio and Poisson's ratio in the water-bearing zones, it is analyzed that the sections with a Vp/Vs ratio of 2.0 or more and a Poisson's ratio of 0.3 or more have a high possibility of being water-bearing zones.

The physicochemical properties of VOx/TiO2 catalysts with different TiO2 supports were analyzed, and SCR reactions were performed. VOx/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation using anatase TiO2, which was manufactured by Sigma Aldrich and prepared from TiOCl2 and titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor. They are denoted as VS, VC, and VP. The specific surface area of the VS was 1/10 or less of that of the VC and VP, and the dispersibility of vanadium oxide was relatively low. As a result of XPS analysis, the ratio of adsorbed oxygen was higher in VS and VP with Ti3+ than in VC. In VC and VP, vanadium mainly existed in V4+ and V3+ states in relation to the dispersibility of vanadium oxide. The amount of adsorbed oxygen contributed more to NH3-SCR activity than vanadium oxide dispersibility below 250 ℃, while vanadium oxide dispersibility contributed more to activity beyond 300 ℃. The fast SCR activity in all three samples was the highest at NO2/NOx = 0.5, followed by VS < VC < VP samples. It was determined that the dispersibility of vanadium oxide had a significant effect on fast NH3-SCR activity.
Three dimensional crustal structure and source features of earthquake hypocenters on the Korean peninsula were investigated using P and S-wave travel time tomography. The main goal of this research was to find Vp/Vs anomalies at earthquake hypocenters as well as those of crustal structure of basins and deep tectonic settings. This allowed fer the extrapolation of more detailed seismotectonic force from the Korean peninsula. The earthquake hypocenters were found to have high Vp/Vs ratio discrepancies (VRD) at the vertical sections. High V/p/Vs ratios were also found in the sedimentary basins and beneath the Chugaryong Rift Zone (CRZ), which was due to mantle plume that subsequently solidified with many fractures and faults which were saturated with connate water. The hypocenters of most earthquakes were found in the upper crust for Youngwol (YE), Kyongju (KE), Hongsung (HE), Kaesong (KSE), Daekwan (DKE), and Daehung (DHE) earthquakes, but near the subcrust or the Moho Discontinuity for Mt. Songni (SE), Sariwon (SRE) and Mt. Jiri (JE) earthquakes. Especially, we found hot springs of the Daekwan, Daehung and Unsan regions coincide with high VRD. Also, this cannot rule out the possibility that there are some partial meltings in the subcrust of this region. High VRD might indicate that many faults and fractures with connate water were dehydrated when earthquakes took place, reducing shear modulus in the hypocenter areas. This is can be explained by due to the fact that a point source which is represented by the moment tensor that may involve changes in volume, shear fracture, and rigidity. High Vp/Vs ratio discrepancies (VRD) were also found beneath Mt. Backdu beneath 40 km, indicating that magma chamber existed beneath Mt. Backdu is reducing shear modulus of S-wave velocity.
Soil and rock dynamic properties such as shear wave velocity (VS), compressional wave velocity (VP) and corresponding Poisson's ratio ( v ) are very important geotechnical parameters in predicting deformational behavior of structures as well as practicing seismic design and performance evaluation. In an effort to measure the parameter efficiently and accurately, various bore-hole seismic testing techniques have been, thus, developed and used during past several decades. In this study, cross-hole seismic testing technique which is known as the most reliable seismic method was adopted for obtaining geotechnical dynamic properties. To perform successfully the cross-hole test for rock as well as soil layers regardless of the ground water level, spring-loaded source which impact laterally a subsurface ground in vertical bore-hole was developed and applied at three study areas, which contain four sites composed of two existing port sites and two new LNG storage facility sites. The geotechnical dynamic properties such as VS, VP and v with depth were efficiently determined from the laterally impacted cross-hole seismic tests at study sites, and were provided as the fundamental parameters for the seismic performance evaluation of the existing ports and the seismic design of the LNG storage facilities.
The purpose of this study was to compare radiation dose and image quality between low-dose (LDP) and standard-dose protocol (SDP). LDP (120 kVp, 30 mAs, 2-mm thickness) and SDP (120 kVp, 180 mAs, 1.2-mm thickness) images obtained from 61 subjects were retrospectively evaluated at level of carina bifurcation, using multi-detector CT (Brilliance 16, Philips Medical Systems). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated at ascending aorta and infraspinatus muscle, from CT number and back-ground noise. Radiation dose from two protocols measured at 5-point using acrylic-phantom, and CT number and noise measured at 4-point using water-phantom. All statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 19.0 program. LDP images showed significantly more noise and a significantly lower SNR and CNR than did SDP images at ascending aorta and infraspinatus muscle. Noise, SNR and CNR were significantly correlated with body mass index (p<0.001). Radiation dose, SNR and CNR from phantom were significant differences between two protocols. LDP showed a significant reduction of radiation dose with a significant change in SNR and CNR compared with SDP. Therefore, exposure dose on LDP in clinical applications needs resetting highly more considering image quality.

Compressional wave velocity and shear wave velocity were measured for gassy sediments collected from Jinhae Bay, Korea. To distinguish inhomogeneities of gassy sediments, Computed Tomography (CT) was carried out for gassy sediment using CT Scanner. The cored sediments are composed of homogeneous and soft mud (greater than $8{\Phi}$ in mean grain size) containing clay content more than 50%. In depth interval of gassy sediments, compressional wave velocity is significantly decreased from 1480m/s to 1360m/s, indicating that the gas greatly affects compressional wave velocity due to a gas and/or degassing cracks. Shear wave velocity shows a slight increasing pattern from ${\sim}55\;m/s$ in the upper part of the core to ${\sim}58\;m/s$ at 320 cm depth, and then decreases to ${\sim}54\;m/s$ in the lower part of the core containing a small amount of gas. But shear wave velocity in the gassy sediments is slightly greater than that of non-gassy sediments in the upper part of the core. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio is decreased (from 30 to 25) in gas charged zone. The Vp/Vs ratio is well correlated with shear wave velocity, but no correlation with compressional wave velocity. This suggests that low concentrations of gas have little affects on shear wave velocity. By CT images, the gas in the sediments is mostly concentrated around inner edge of core liner due to a long duration after sediment collection.
In this study, we applied the teleseismic receiver function technique to determine the crustal thicknesses and ratios for 31 broadband stations of the Korean Peninsula and map out the lateral variation of Moho depth in the Peninsula. The estimated depths to Moho range from 26 to 35 km except for an island station ULL (17 km). The Moho is turned out to be deeper in the south-western part of the Peninsula and western Gyeongsang basin, and shallower in the off-shore region close to East Sea (Sea of Japan). The ratio varies from 1.69 to 1.89 with the average of 1.77, which is close to global average (1.78) in the crust.

Purpose To evaluate the feasibility of pediatric low-dose facial CT reconstructed with filtered back projection (FBP) using adequate kernels. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and imaging data of children aged < 10 years who underwent facial CT at our emergency department. The patients were divided into two groups: low-dose CT (LDCT; Group A, n = 73) with a fixed 80-kVp tube potential and automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) and standard-dose CT (SDCT; Group B, n = 40) with a fixed 120-kVp tube potential and ATCM. All images were reconstructed with FBP using bone and soft tissue kernels in Group A and only bone kernel in Group B. The groups were compared in terms of image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Two radiologists subjectively scored the overall image quality of bony and soft tissue structures. The CT dose index volume and dose-length product were recorded. Results Image noise was higher in Group A than in Group B in bone kernel images (p < 0.001). Group A using a soft tissue kernel showed the highest SNR and CNR for all soft tissue structures (all p < 0.001). In the qualitative analysis of bony structures, Group A scores were found to be similar to or higher than Group B scores on comparing bone kernel images. In the qualitative analysis of soft tissue structures, there was no significant difference between Group A using a soft tissue kernel and Group B using a bone kernel with a soft tissue window setting (p > 0.05). Group A showed a 76.9% reduction in radiation dose compared to Group B (3.2 ± 0.2 mGy vs. 13.9 ± 1.5 mGy; p < 0.001). Conclusion The addition of a soft tissue kernel image to conventional CT reconstructed with FBP enables the use of pediatric low-dose facial CT protocol while maintaining image quality.

National standard system for calibrating voltage transformer(VT) up to primary voltage of 240 kV have been established in 2005. The system consists of voltage source, regulating unit, VT testing unit, standard VT, VT under test and VT burden. To verify and validate the performance for 240 kV VT calibration system, the comparison with the National Measurement Institute of Australia(NMIA) has been performed using same VTs. The comparison results of the VTs mesured at the Korea Research Institute of Stansdards and Science(KRISS) are consistent with those measured at NMIA within 0.002 % for ratio error and 0.14 min for phase displacement in the primary voltage ranges of Vp = 3300 V - 22000 V with a secondary voltage of Vs = 110 V.
