  • In general, the vertical vibration problems for strength of members and serviceability of building structures are not considered in structural design process, but the prediction of the vertical vibration is very important and essential to structural design process. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of vertical vibration in terms of the transfer of horizontal directions on the rahmen building structures and the shear wall building structures. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration, the modal test and the heel-drop excitation experiments were conducted several times on the two type building structures. The results from the experiments are analyzed and compared with the results. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vortical vibration transfer in horizontal way are effected from the fundamental frequency of the slabs and excitation forces and are effected the shear wall on the path of the vibration transfer.

  • Direct numerical simulations are peformed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow suddenly subjected to spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces in the near-wall region. The Reynolds number based on the inlet momentum thickness and free-stream velocity is $Re_\theta=300$. A fully-implicit fractional step method is employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses are obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin-friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electro-magnetic forces. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques are used to observe the response of streamwise vortices to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are clearly affected by spanwise oscillating electro-magnetic forces.

  • Turbulent flows in a intake part of vacuum cleaner are studied by RANS simulations. The governing equations are solved by the SIMPLE algorithm based on the finite volume method of the unstructured grid system. The predicted results show that the suction performance is closely related to the variation of flow structure in the intake part. In order to investigate for the cleaning of bedclothes and carpet without sticking, several design changes are applied. The introduction of a solid cylinder in the intake part changes vortical structures significantly. Based on this result, a new design with spiral brushes is proposed. The design shows a good behavior for the suction performance and the flow control.

  • It is known that an oscillating airfoil can Produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed $K\'{a}rm\'{a}n$ vortex street, and this can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. The wake formation behind the heaving airfoil was visualized and was measured using PIV systems We have been examined various conditions such as frequency number, amplitude in NACA 0010. As Strouhal number is greater than 0.08. wake profile with velocity deficit can be transformed into the wake with velocity excess After evaluating vortex center flow patterns in the wake investigated using tracking trajectories in temporal evaluation of the shedding vortices. We also Presented the experimental results on the unsteady vortices structure of the heaving airfoil at various parameters.

  • The latitude-independent Pc5 pulsations with a spectral peak at -3 mHz were observed with IMAGE and SAMNET magnetometer away, ranging from -47$^{\circ}$ to -77$^{\circ}$geomagnetic latitudes, in the morning sector (0700-1000 local time) during an interval of 30 minutes on April 29, 2001. The spectral amplitude had a local peak at -67$^{\circ}$, where a sudden phase change of -180$^{\circ}$ is found. A vortical equivalent ionospheric current structure centered at latitude between 67$^{\circ}$ and 71$^{\circ}$ was observed during the Pc5 pulsations and the rotational sense of the current vortex was reversed for one cycle of the pulsation. • The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex and flame-vortex interaction in a $CH_4/Air$ diffusion flame with addition of $CO_2$ were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow. A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. Through comparison of results by effect of $CO_2$ added either on the fuel or oxidizer side, it was found that the growth of single vortex and entrainment of surrounding fluid by $CO_2$addition on the fuel side are larger than those by $CO_2$ addition on oxidizer side. Also, when $CO_2$ is added on fuel side, flame-vortex interaction becomes more significant than on air side.

  • We present an immersed boundary (IB) method for 3D simulation of flappingflags in a uniform flow. The proposed formulation is manipulated on the basis of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A direct numerical method is developed to calculate the flag motion, with the elastic force treated implicitly. The fluid motion defined on an Eulerian grid and the flag motion defined on a Lagrangian grid are independently solved and the mass of flag is handled in a natural way. An additional momentum forcing is formulated from the flag motion equation in a way similar with the direct-forcing IB formulation and acts as the interaction force between the flag and ambient fluid. A series of numerical tests are performed and the present results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with previous studies. The instantaneous flag motion is analyzed under different conditions and surrounding vortical structures are identified. The effects of physical parameters on the flapping frequency are studied.

  • Spandex yarn requires a twisting process during winding and unwinding processes at the textile industry. The air-twist nozzle is widely used as part of the winding and unwinding. This paper describes computational approach to design the geometry of the air-twist nozzle. The nozzle has circular yarn-channel and the air-inlet which is perpendicularly connected to the yarn-channel with yarn-loading slit. The air-inlet of the nozzle is designed while measurements of the yarn-channel are fixed. The airflow inside the air-twist nozzle is simulated by using Computational Fluid Dynamic model. The Ansys CFX was used to perform steady simulations of the airflow for the air-twisting process. The vortical structure and the airflow pattern such as velocity streamline, vorticity, velocity of the air-twist nozzle are discussed. Computational results are compared with experimental results in this paper.

  • The effects of thermal stratification on the flow of a stratified fluid past a heated circular cylinder were examined in a wind tunnel. Turbulent intensities, rms values of temperature and turbulent convective heat flux distributions in the heated cylinder wake with and without thermal stratification were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. A phase averaging method was also used to estimated coherent motion in the near wake. It is found that the vertical turbulent motion in the stably stratified flow case dissipates faster than that of the neutral case, i.e., vertical growth of vortical structure is suppressed under the strongly stratified condition. The coherent motion of temperature makes a large contribution like velocity coherent motion. However, the coherent motions of temperature fluctuation become very different with the change of experimental conditions, though the velocity coherent motions are quite similar in all experimental conditions.
