A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the formation characteristics of a single vortex interacting with $CH_4/N_2$-Air counterflow nonpremixed flame. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector scheme for a low Mach number flow. The detailed transport properties and a 16-step augmented reduced mechanism are adopted in this calculation. The budgets of the vorticity transport equation arc examined to reveal the mechanisms leading to the formation, evolution and dissipation of a single vortex interacting with counterflow nonpremixed flame. It is found that the stretching term, which depends on the azimuthal component of vorticity, and radial velocity, mainly generates vortieitv in non-reacting and reacting flows. The viscous and baroclinic torque term destroy the vorticity in non-reacting flow. In addition, the baroclinic torque term due to density and pressure gradient generates vorticity, while viscous and the volumetric expansion terms due to density gradient destroy vorticity in reacting flow.
The formation mechanism of the vortex streets in the lee of the mountain Is Investigated by a three-dimensional numerical model. The model is based upon the hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in which the vertical turbulent momentum flux is estimated by a turbulence parameterization scheme, but the horizontal viscosity is assumed to be constant. The results show that Karman vortex streets can form even without surface friction in a constant ambient flow with uniform stratification. The vortex formation is related to breaking of the mountain wave, which depends on the Froude number (Fr). In the case of a three-dimensional bell-shaped mountain, the wave breaking occurs when Fr is less than about 0.8, while a barman vortex forms when Fr is less than about 0.22. Vortex formation also depends on Reynolds number, which is estimated from the horizontal diffusivity. The vortex formation can be explained by the wave saturation theory given by Lindzen (1981) with some modification. Simulations in this study show that in the case of Karman vortex formation the momentum flux in the lower level is much larger than the saturated momentum flux, whereas it is almost equal to the saturated momentum at the upper levels as expected from the saturation theory. As a result, large flux divergence is produced in the lower layer, the mean flow is decelerated behind the mountain, and the horizontal wind shear forms between unmodified ambient wind. The momentum exchange between the mean flow and the mountain wave is produced by the turbulence within a breaking wave. From the result, well developed vortices like Karman vortex can be formed. . The results of the momentum budget calculated by the hydrostatic model are almost the same as nonhydrostatic results as long as horizontal scale of the mountain is 10 km. A well developed barman vortex similar to the hydrostatic one was simulated in the nonhydrostatic case. Therefore, we conclude that the hydrostatic assumption is adequate to investigate the origin of the Km8n vortex from the viewpoint of wave breaking.

An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using the constant temperature anemometer and through flow visualization. Previous report(Boo at al., 2001) shows that there are three different modes in vortex shedding behavior. This paper is focused on the identification of the physical reasons why the difference is occured in vortex shedding. The through flow velocity crossing fins decreases as increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch mainly due to the flow resistence. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by velocity distribution around fin tube, especially by the velocity gradient. The velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Those differences in velocity gradients generate different vortex shedding mechanism.

A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation is performed to investigate the dynamic behaviors of a single vortex in counter reacting and non-reacting flow field. A predictor-corrector-type numerical scheme with a low Mach number approximation is used in this simulation. A 16-step augmented reduced mechanism is adopted to treat the chemical reaction. The budget of the vorticity transport equation is examined to reveal a mechanism leading to the formation, destruction and transport of a single vortex according to the direction of vortex generation in reacting and non-reacting flows. The results show that air-side vortex has more larger strength than that of fuel-side vortex in both non-reacting and reacting flows. In reacting flow, the vortex is more dissipated than that in non-reacting flow as the vortex approach the flame. The total circulation in reacting flow, however, is larger than that in non-reacting flow because the convection transport of vorticity becomes much large by the increased velocity near the flame region. It is also found that the stretching and the convection terms mainly generate vorticity in non-reacting and reacting flows. The baroclinic torque term generates vorticity, while the viscous and the volumetric expansion terms attenuate vorticity in reacting flow. Furthermore, the contribution of volumetric expansion term on total circulation for air-side vortex is much larger than that of fuel-side vortex. It is also estimated that the difference of total circulation near stagnation plane according to the direction of vortex generation mainly attributes to the convection term.
The dynamic behaviors of the single vortex in a reacting and non-reacting methane-air jet flow were investigated numerically. The numerical method was based on a predictor-corrector for low Mach number flow A two-step global reaction mechanism was adopted as a combustion model. After fuel and air were developed entirely in computational domain, the single vortex was generated by an axisymmetric jet that was impulsed to emit a cold fuel. Through comparisons of single vortex in reacting and non-reacting jet flow, it was found that global dynamic behaviors and the mechanisms leading to the formation, transport processes of vortex ring were influenced significantly by heat release from reaction. In addition, the interaction between a single vortex and flame bulge generated by buoyance effect in a reacting jet flow was found.
The objective of this study is to understand the flow above the front edge of low-rise building roofs. The greatest suction on the building is known to occur at this location as a result of the formation of conical vortices in the separated flow zone. It is expected that the relationship between this suction and upstream flow conditions can be better understood through the analysis of the vortex flow mechanism. Experimental measurements were used, along with predictions from numerical simulations of delta wing vortex flows, to develop a model of the pressure field within and beneath the conical vortex. The model accounts for the change in vortex suction with wind angle, and includes a parameter indicating the strength of the vortex. The model can be applied to both mean and time dependent surface pressures, and is validated in a companion paper.

In the fully developed internal flow fields, there are complex transition flows caused by interaction of the cross flow and jet when jet is Injected Into the flow. These interactions are studied by means of the flow visualization methods. An instantaneous laser tomographic method is used to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation in the branch pipe flow. The velocity range of cross flow of the pipe is 0.7m/s and the corresponding Reynolds number $R_{cf}$, based on the duct height is $5.6{\times}10^3$, diameter/height ratios(d/H) 0.14 and velocity ratios 3.0. Oil mist with the size of $10{\mu}m$ diameter is used for the scattering particle. The instantaneous topological features of the vortex ring roll-up of the jet shear layer and characteristics of this flow are studied in detail by performing flow visualization in rectangular duct flow. It is found that the formation and roll-up of ring vortices is a periodic phenomenon. The detailed topology of the vortices in the near field of a cross -flow jet and the mechanism associated with them give enforced hints of vortex breakdown within the vortex system due to the interaction of the jet and the cross-flow.

This study is conducted to investigate aerodynamic forces and wake structures about the pressure interference of a circular cylinder with slits. An experimental investigation of a circular cylinder with slits is carried out in uniform flow in the range of Reynolds number from 8,000 to 32,000 using X-type hot wire. Flow visualization is executed by smoke-wire method to understand the mechanism of these vortex formation process. Inspection in the wake at X/D=5.5 of the cylinder with the slits suggested that a strong vortex-shedding pattern for these cylinders is revealed compare with a circular cylinder without slits. It is found that the rolling up position of shear layer of the cylinder with slits is shorten compare with a circular cylinder without slits.
