  • Direct numerical simulations of flow over a circular cylinder are performed at two different Reynolds numbers (Re=220 and 300) that correspond to three-dimensional instabilities of mode A and mode B, respectively, to investigate the characteristics of drag and lift at these Reynolds numbers. The drag and lift coefficients are measured locally along the spanwise direction and their characteristics are studied in detail. The variation of total drag in time is large at Re=220, and the total drag becomes minimum when vortex dislocation occurs in the wake. The drag and lift variations in space are also closely associated with the evolution of vortex dislocation at this Reynolds number. At Re=300, vortex dislocation is not found in the wake and temporal variations of drag and lift are much smaller than those at Re=220, but their spatial variations are quite large due to the near-wake secondary vortices existing in the mode B instability.

  • Since Nye and Berry$^{(1)}$ showed that in free space the electromagnetic field could contain stable, propagating phase singularities termed "dislocations", optical dislocations have been extensively investigated in nonlinear optics and laser physics. As the wave propagates, the lines of constant phase surrounding a dislocation trace out a spiral in space or in time. So these phase singularities are now usually referred to as optical vortices. Baranova and her co-workers$^{(2)}$ have shown that in fully developed speckle patterns, there is, one optical vortex accompanying each speckle spot on average. Among these vortices there are networks in phasemap because only one phase is to be assigned in one point except optical dislocations having zero amplitude. Freund et al.$^{(3)}$ have been studied optical dislocation networks and simulations are compared with experimental results. (omitted)

  • Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed to study the effects of flow direction and flow velocity on the flow regime behind a curved pipe represented by a curved circular cylinder. The cylinder is based on a previous study and consists of a quarter segment of a ring and a horizontal part at the end of the ring. The cylinder was rotated in the computational domain to examine five incident flow angles of 0-180° with 45° intervals at Reynolds numbers of 100 and 500. The detailed wake topologies represented by λ2 criterion were captured using a Large Eddy Simulation (LES). The curved cylinder leads to different flow regimes along the span, which shows the three-dimensionality of the wake field. At a Reynolds number of 100, the shedding was suppressed after flow angle of 135°, and oblique flow was observed at 90°. At a Reynolds number of 500, vortex dislocation was detected at 90° and 135°. These observations are in good agreement with the three-dimensionality of the wake field that arose due to the curved shape.
