  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between self-esteem, self-efficacy, and awareness for disability in dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 521 dental hygiene students from 5 universities in Gwangju and Jeonnam frm June 13 to July 16, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of self-esteem by Rosenberg (10 items), self-efficacy by Schwarzer (7 items), and the negative awareness for disabled person by Siller (24 items) using Likert 5 point scale. Results: Those who did volunteer activity for disabled person showed high self-esteem and self-efficacy than those who did not. Students having disability-related training experience had high self-esteem (p<0.05). Higher the self-esteem was, higher the self-efficacy was (r=0.655). Higher the self-efficacy was, the lower the negative awareness was (r=-0.142). Higher self-esteem enhanced the positive awareness for the disabled person (r=-0.206)(p<0.01). Conclusions: The systematic curriculum development for the disabled person recognition improvement should be made in order to enhance self-esteem and self-efficacy of the dental hygiene students.

  • Asthma is an inflammatory airway disease and is characterized by the releases of inflammatory mediators including chemokines. They are mainly associated with the recruitment, activation and dysregulation of specific inflammatory cells, especially neutrophils in neutrophilic asthma. CC chemokines bind to CC chemokine receptors (CCRs) in the surface of their target cells. The aims of this study are to examine the CCR expression in neutrophils of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of asthmatic patients and to determine the alternation of migration and apoptosis of neutrophils by the BALF. We demonstrate that CCR3 strongly expresses in BALF neutrophils of asthmatic patients as compared to other CCRs and increases during apoptosis of the BALF neutrophils. The migration of asthmatic blood neutrophils increases in response to asthmatic BALF as compared to BALF of normal volunteer. In addition, asthmatic BALF includes the higher levels of IL-8 protein than normal BALF and it has no effect on apoptosis of asthmatic blood neutrophils. Taken together, our results indicate that CCR3 expression may be associated with unknown function of asthmatic BALF neutrophils and BALF may be involved in the recruitment of neutrophils into the airway, but not in the neutrophils apoptosis.

  • Purpose: The advantages of corporate social responsibility (CSR) include stronger recognition and reputation, which lead to a company's good public image, increased customer loyalty, operational cost saving, and employee retention. The purpose of the present research is to take a close look at the association between CSR and organization's value. Research design, data and methodology: The authors tried to obtain the high-quality textual data from mostly peer-reviewed journals using a PRISMA ((Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). The authors was to figure out adequate solutions from limited range of the current literature (only peer-reviewed research) regarding CSR and corporate value. Results: Our investigation indicates that CSR is essential to all businesses as it ensures they keep in touch with society, retaining top personnel, and achieving top financial success. Companies and organizations can engage in four corporate social responsibility initiatives to increase value, including environmental projects, charitable work, honest labor practices, and volunteer activity. Conclusions: An organizations should be involved in the community and consider how its actions affect the environment and society. Small or large businesses are expected to lead in developing a progressive CSR program that benefits people and the environment and continuously changes depending on the social and economic environment.

  • The Purpose of the study is to analyze present state of the volunteers in cultural program activities in Korean libraries and for reinforcing library volunteer activity. 2,349 volunteers were asked questionaires for the purpose looking into present state. The factors were number of regional participants, libraries which have partaken, number of participants per program, and participating programs. The programs that volunteers have partaken, its kind, relative importance of the partaken program, "non-reading" program's contents, preferable program by each targeted users, and the most participated program were analyzed.

  • The study focuses on the relationship between the desire for economic activity and happiness among the elderly living alone. Qualitative research was conducted as a research method. Research participants were either go to the elderly community wellness center or volunteer at the center. The results were: First, it turned out that enjoying different programs and socializing with others at the community wellness center and the health of family were the factors of happiness to the elderly living alone. Second, the difference on the desire on economic activity among the elderly living alone was significant. Three groups could be categorized: the elderly who wants economic income through jobs, others who were wealthy, and others who do not struggle with their finance but wanted to continue their economic activity through part-time jobs. In average, the desire for economic activity was high but they wanted 2 - 3 hours of labor per day, considering their physical condition. In case of income, there were two groups, who desperately wants more income, and others who feel their income is sufficient. This study suggested a virtuous cycle of government support policies to the elderly living alone in economic and psychological perspectives.

  • This study performed a qualitative research on the transformative learning cases in vocational education for female baby-boom generation. The baby-boom generation that recently starts retirement is participating in vocational education for their re-employment. Even though their first goal of education was to find a job, they experienced in finding themselves through the actual education. Especially, female baby-boom generation learners were finding their own identity as an entity of social participation, getting out of the existing identity as wife, mother, and housewife. Such a learning experience was the process of recovering themselves, and in this process, new meanings of life were formed. In the results of the study, first, the learning experience in vocational education was the transformative learning to find themselves. They newly created themselves by critically introspecting their negative experience and perception of themselves, and then rearranging/cognizing the accumulated experiences. Second, the immersion in the transitional process to learner increased the motivation for learning and also drew learning about learning. Especially, they reinterpreted their educational methods and contents based on their learning experience in the vocational activity. Through the process, they learnt their past learning experience again. Third, the educational volunteer activity through learning club was a place for study to practice learning. Through this, the research participants realized that theories could not be separated from practice.

  • Background: Pain is often measured using psychophysical scaling techniques. However, all of these methods found their limits, since they were based on the subjective sensations reported by the subjects. It is, therefore, desirable to validate psychophysical pain measures by simultaneously measuring some physiological correlate of nociception. We studied an objective method for measuring pain in human volunteer using R(III) nociceptive flexion reflex. Methods: Four different intensity of electrical stimuli between perception and 1.4 times the R(III) nociceptive flexion threshold were delivered to the sole of the feet in 8 normal volunteers. We measured the flexion reflex activity in the skin over the ipsilateral tibialis anterior muscle and subjects rated each stimulus on a visual analog scale (VAS) Results: Both R(III) nociceptive flexion reflex activity and VAS ratings showed a linear relationship with stimulus intensity and with each other in all volunteers. Conclusions: R(III) nociceptive flexion reflex elicited through electrical stimulation may used as an objective pain measurement, previsionary based on our study paradigm.

  • Background: An association between the ABO blood group and the risk of certain malignancies, including pancreatic and gastric cancer, has been reported previously. However, it is unclear whether this association is valid for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). In this study, ABO blood groups and the Rh factor were investigated in a series of GIST cases. Material and Methods: In 162 patients with GIST, blood group and Rh factor were examined and compared with a control group of 3,022,883 healthy volunteer blood donors of the Turkish Red Crescent between 2004 and 2011. The relationship of blood groups with tumor size, mitotic activity, and age were also evaluated. Results: Overall, the ABO blood group and Rh factor distributions of the 162 patients with GIST were similar to those of the general population. There were no significant differences between both ABO blood types and Rh factor in terms of tumor size, mitotic activity, and age. Conclusion: This is the first study reported on this issue. In our study, we didn't find any relationship between GIST and ABO blood group and Rh factor. However further studies with larger number of patients are needed to establish the role of blood groups in this population.
