막 축전식 탈염 공정의 성능 향상을 위한 강화 이온교환막 (Reinforced Ion-exchange Membranes for Enhancing Membrane Capacitive Deionization)

  • 막 축전식 탈염 공정(membrane capacitive deionization, MCDI)은 이온교환막을 다공성 전극과 함께 사용하여 탈염 효율을 향상시킬 수 있는 CDI 공정의 변형이다. 이온교환막은 MCDI의 성능에 큰 영향을 미치는 핵심 구성요소이다. 본 연구에서는 MCDI의 탈염 효율을 크게 향상시킬 수 있는 이온교환막의 최적 제조 인자를 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 PE 다공성 필름의 세공에 단량체를 충진하고 in-situ 광중합을 진행하여 세공충진 이온교환막(pore-filled ion-exchange membranes, PFIEMs)을 제조하였다. 실험 결과, 제조된 PFIEMs은 다양한 탈염 및 에너지 변환 공정에 적용할 수 있는 수준의 우수한 전기화학적 특성을 나타내었다. 또한, MCDI 성능과 막 특성 인자와의 상관성 분석을 통해 막의 가교도를 제어하여 막의 전기적 저항이 충분히 낮은 범위에서 이온 선택 투과성을 최대화하는 것이 MCDI의 성능 향상을 위해 가장 바람직한 막제조 조건이라는 결론을 얻었다.

The role of internal architecture in producing high-strength 3D printed cobalt-chromium objects

  • PURPOSE. The objectives of the current study were to estimate the influence of self-reinforced hollow structures with a graded density on the dimensional accuracy, weight, and mechanical properties of Co-Cr objects printed with the direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty-five dog-bone samples were manufactured to evaluate the dimensional accuracy of printing, weight, and tensile properties of DMLS printed Co-Cr. They were divided into Group 1 (control) (n = 5), Group 2, 3, and 4 with incorporated hollow structures based on (spherical, elliptical, and diamond) shapes; they were subdivided into subgroups (n = 5) according to the volumetric reduction (10%, 15%, 20% and 25%). Radiographic imaging and microscopic analysis of the fractographs were conducted to validate the created geometries; the dimensional accuracy, weight, yield tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity were calculated. The data were estimated by one-way ANOVA and Duncan's tests at P < .05. RESULTS. The accuracy test showed an insignificant difference in the x, y, z directions in all printed groups. The weight was significantly reduced proportionally to the reduced volume fraction. The yield strength and elastic modulus of the control group and Group 2 at 10% volume reduction were comparable and significantly higher than the other subgroups. CONCLUSION. The printing accuracy was not affected by the presence or type of the hollow geometry. The weight of Group 2 at 10% reduction was significantly lower than that of the control group. The yield strength and elastic modulus of the Group 2 at a 10% reduction showed means equivalent to the compact objects and were significantly higher than other subgroups.

Yield monitoring systems for non-grain crops: A review

  • Yield monitoring systems have become integral to precision agriculture, providing insights into the spatial variability of crop yield and playing an important role in modern harvesting technology. This paper aims to review current research trends in yield monitoring systems, specifically designed for non-grain crops, including cabbages, radishes, potatoes, and tomatoes. A systematic literature survey was conducted to evaluate the performance of various monitoring methods for non-grain crop yields. This study also assesses both mass- and volume-based yield monitoring systems to provide precise evaluations of agricultural productivity. Integrating load cell technology enables precise mass flow rate measurements and cumulative weighing, offering an accurate representation of crop yields, and the incorporation of image-based analysis enhances the overall system accuracy by facilitating volumetric flow rate calculations and refined volume estimations. Mass flow methods, including weighing, force impact, and radiometric approaches, have demonstrated impressive results, with some measurement error levels below 5%. Volume flow methods, including paddle wheel and optical methodologies, yielded error levels below 3%. Signal processing and correction measures also play a crucial role in achieving accurate yield estimations. Moreover, the selection of sensing approach, sensor layout, and mounting significantly influence the performance of monitoring systems for specific crops.

Semiautomatic Three-Dimensional Threshold-Based Cardiac Computed Tomography Ventricular Volumetry in Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: Comparison with Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging

  • Objective: To assess the accuracy and potential bias of computed tomography (CT) ventricular volumetry using semiautomatic three-dimensional (3D) threshold-based segmentation in repaired tetralogy of Fallot, and to compare them to those of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Materials and Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 32 patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot who had undergone both cardiac CT and MRI within 3 years. For ventricular volumetry, semiautomatic 3D threshold-based segmentation was used in CT, while a manual simplified contouring 2D method was used in MRI. The indexed ventricular volumes were compared between CT and MRI. The indexed ventricular stroke volumes were compared with the indexed arterial stroke volumes measured using phase-contrast MRI. The mean differences and degrees of agreement in the indexed ventricular and stroke volumes were evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis. Results: The indexed end-systolic (ES) volumes showed no significant difference between CT and MRI (p > 0.05), while the indexed end-diastolic (ED) volumes were significantly larger on CT than on MRI (93.6 ± 17.5 mL/m2 vs. 87.3 ± 15.5 mL/m2 for the left ventricle [p < 0.001] and 177.2 ± 39.5 mL/m2 vs. 161.7 ± 33.1 mL/m2 for the right ventricle [p < 0.001], respectively). The mean differences between CT and MRI were smaller for the indexed ES volumes (2.0-2.5 mL/m2) than for the indexed ED volumes (6.3-15.5 mL/m2). CT overestimated the stroke volumes by 14-16%. With phase-contrast MRI as a reference, CT (7.2-14.3 mL/m2) showed greater mean differences in the indexed stroke volumes than did MRI (0.8-3.3 mL/m2; p < 0.005). Conclusion: Compared to 2D MRI, CT ventricular volumetry using semiautomatic 3D threshold-based segmentation provides comparable ES volumes, but overestimates the ED and stroke volumes in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot.

Pattern Analysis of Left Ventricular Remodeling Using Cardiac Computed Tomography in Children with Congenital Heart Disease: Preliminary Results

  • Objective: To assess left ventricular remodeling patterns using cardiac computed tomography (CT) in children with congenital heart disease and correlate these patterns with their clinical course. Materials and Methods: Left ventricular volume and myocardial mass were quantified in 17 children with congenital heart disease who underwent initial and follow-up end-systolic cardiac CT studies with a mean follow-up duration of 8.4 ± 9.7 months. Based on changes in the indexed left ventricular myocardial mass (LVMi) and left ventricular mass-volume ratio (LVMVR), left ventricular remodeling between the two serial cardiac CT examinations was categorized into one of four patterns: pattern 1, increased LVMi and increased LVMVR; pattern 2, decreased LVMi and decreased LVMVR; pattern 3, increased LVMi and decreased LVMVR; and pattern 4, decreased LVMi and increased LVMVR. Left ventricular remodeling patterns were correlated with unfavorable clinical courses. Results: Baseline LVMi and LVMVR were 65.1 ± 37.9 g/m2 and 4.0 ± 3.2 g/mL, respectively. LVMi increased in 10 patients and decreased in seven patients. LVMVR increased in seven patients and decreased in 10 patients. Pattern 1 was observed in seven patients, pattern 2 in seven, and pattern 3 in three patients. Unfavorable events were observed in 29% (2/7) of patients with pattern 1 and 67% (2/3) of patients with pattern 3, but no such events occurred in pattern 2 during the follow-up period (4.4 ± 2.7 years). Conclusion: Left ventricular remodeling patterns can be characterized using cardiac CT in children with congenital heart disease and may be used to predict their clinical course.

Usefulness of nasal cavity evaluation before high-resolution esophageal manometry in high-risk patients

  • Background/Aims: A catheter is inserted through the nasal cavity during high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM), which may cause adverse events such as pain or epistaxis. Despite these possible safety considerations, studies on this subject are very limited. We aimed to investigate the usefulness of nasal cavity evaluation before HRM to reduce the risk of adverse events and test failure. Methods: Patients who underwent HRM after consultation with the ear-nose-throat department for nasal evaluation were retrospectively enrolled between December 2021 and May 2022. The included patients had a previous history of sinonasal disease or surgery or had subjective nasal discomfort. All patients answered the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) questionnaire, and subjective nasal discomfort was scored using a visual analog scale. Nasal endoscopy and acoustic rhinometry were performed for disease evaluation and volumetric assessment. Results: The analysis included 22 patients with a mean age of 58.9 years. The mean SNOT-22 score was 24.2, and 16 patients (72.7%) complained of subjective nasal obstruction. The HRM catheter was successfully inserted in 20 patients (90.9%), without any significant adverse events. The objective measurement outcomes of acoustic rhinometry and sinus endoscopy did not always correspond to subjective symptoms. Narrowed nasal airways unresponsive to decongestants were observed in two patients with failed catheter insertion. Conclusions: To reduce the risk of adverse events and test failure during HRM, a site-specific questionnaire to evaluate nasal obstruction might be helpful. When nasal obstruction is suspected, objective nasal cavity evaluation could be recommended for the safe and successful performance of HRM.

의료영상을 이용한 인체장기의 분할 및 시각화 (Segmentation and Visualization of Human Anatomy using Medical Imagery)

  • 방사선과 의사들은 CT 및 MRI 스캐너로부터 얻어진 인체의 단면 영상을 연속적으로 보고 실제 3차원적으로 인체가 어떻게 구성되어 있는지를 상상하여 병변을 구별하는데, 의학영상을 이용한 인체 장기의 3차원 시각화는 2차원 형태의 인체 단면 영상들을 복잡한 알고리즘이나 고성능의 컴퓨팅 파워를 사용하여 실제 인체와 같이 3차원으로 재구성하여 보여준다. 단면 영상의 추적, 관심영역의 표시 및 추출등과 같은 2차원 영상분석은 시간이 많이 소모되고, 주관적일 수가 있으며, 수작업인 관계로 빈번한 에러가 발생하는 단점을 가지는데, 이와 같은 2차원 의료 영상 분석의 단점을 보완하기 위해 의학영상처리 기술과 접목한 3차원 의료 영상의 시각화는 필수적이라 할 수 있다. 명암값 임계치 방법, 영역확장(region growing) 방법, 윤곽선(contour) 추출 방법 및 변형모델(deformable model) 방법을 사용하여 인체의 각 장기를 분리하였으며, 텍스쳐분석(texture analysis)을 통하여 고안된 특징자를 이용하여 암 부분을 인식하는데 사용하였고, 원근투영(perspective projection) 및 볼륨 데이터의 표면을 렌더링하기 위해 마칭큐브(marching cube) 알고리즘을 사용하였다. 인체 및 분리된 장기에 대한 3차원 시각화는 방사선치료계획(radiation treatment planning), 외과 수술계획, 모의수술, 중재적(interventional)시술 및 영상유도수술(image guided surgery)에 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다.

70대의 성별에 따른 피질하부 차이 비교 (Comparison of Differences in Subcortical between Men and Women in their Seventies)

  • 자기 공명 영상(MRI)은 인간의 신경계 장애에서 뇌 구조의 변화를 검사하는 중요한 기술이다. 뇌 발달은 매우 복잡한 과정이며, 신경 생성과 유전자 프로그램의 영향을 받게 된다. 나이가 들어감에 따라 뇌의 다양한 구조 영역이 변화하면서 뇌 질환 형성에 기여하게 되며, 건강한 뇌의 발달에 영향을 미치는 다양한 변수 중 성별은 가장 큰 영향을 주는 요인 중 하나이다. 영상 데이터는 FSL(FMRIB software library)에서 제공하는 SIENAX, FIRST, 정점분석(Vertex Analysis)과 같은 다양한 프로그램을 통해 분석이 수행되었다. 우리의 결과는 특정 연령대의 피질하부영역에서 유의한 성별 관련 차이가 관찰되었음을 보여주고 있다. 성별과 볼륨간의 이러한 변화 정도 차이의 크기는 조사 된 영역에 따라 다르게 나타나고 있다. 이 연구에서 우리는 각 성별간 피질하부영역의 구조 분석을 위해 고해상도 3T MRI를 사용하였다. 또한, 정점 분석은 각 성별간의 피질 구조에서 체적 차이를 시각화하는데 사용되었다. 이 연구는 70대 그룹으로 제한되어 있으며, 향후 더 넓은 연령대를 대상으로 추가 연구가 필요하다.

Contributors of the Severity of Airflow Limitation in COPD Patients

  • Background: Although airway obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is due to pathologic processes in both the airways and the lung parenchyma, the contribution of these processes, as well as other factors, have not yet been evaluated quantitatively. We therefore quantitatively evaluated the factors contributing to airflow limitation in patients with COPD. Methods: The 213 COPD patients were aged >45 years, had smoked >10 pack-years of cigarettes, and had a post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in one second ($FEV_1$)/forced vital capacity (FVC) <0.7. All patients were evaluated by medical interviews, physical examination, spirometry, bronchodilator reversibility tests, lung volume, and 6-minute walk tests. In addition, volumetric computed tomography (CT) was performed to evaluate airway wall thickness, emphysema severity, and mean lung density ratio at full expiration and inspiration. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the variables independently associated with $FEV_1$ - the index of the severity of airflow limitation. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis showed that CT measurements of mean lung density ratio (standardized coefficient ${\beta}$=-0.46; p<0.001), emphysema severity (volume fraction of the lung less than -950 HU at full inspiration; ${\beta}$=-0.24; p<0.001), and airway wall thickness (mean wall area %; ${\beta}$=-0.19, p=0.001), as well as current smoking status (${\beta}$=-0.14; p=0.009) were independent contributors to $FEV_1$. Conclusion: Mean lung density ratio, emphysema severity, and airway wall thickness evaluated by volumetric CT and smoking status could independently contribute to the severity of airflow limitation in patients with COPD.

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 목재(木材) 고유(固有)의 특성(特性)인 흡습성(吸濕性) 및 수축(收縮), 팽창(膨脹)의 이방성(異方性)에 의한 목재(木材) 자체(自體) 및 목제품(木製品)의 가치(價値) 저하(低下)를 방지(防止)하고 목재(木材)의 천연적(天然的)인 아름다운 무늬를 살려 더욱 목재(木材)의 효용가치(効用價値) 높이 기 위하여 비교적(比較的) 가격(價格)이 싸고 독성(毒性)이 없을 뿐만 아니라 주입처리(注入處理)가 용역(容易)한 PEG를 이용(利用)한 목재(木材)의 치수 안정화(安定化) 기술(技術)을 개발(開發)하기 위한 일환(一環)으로 PEG 분자량별(分子量別)(200, 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, 4000, 6000) 및 수종별(樹種別)(Pinus densiflora S. et Z., Larix leptolepis Gordon., Cryptomeria japonica D. Don., Cornus controversa Hemsl., Quercus variabilis Blume., Prunus sargentii Rehder.)로 치수 안정화(安定化) 효과(効果)를 조사(調査)하였던 바, 다음과 같이 요약(要約)될 수 있었다. 1) PEG 주입율(注入率)은 분자량(分子量) 400일 때 137.22%(Pinus densiflora)로 최대치(最大値)를 나타내었고 그 이후(以後)는 비교적(比較的) 완만(緩慢)하게 감소(減少)하는 경향(傾向)을 보여 주었으며 비중(比重)이 낮을수록 PEG 주입량(注入量)도 증가(增加)하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 2) 부피 팽윤율(澎潤率)은 비중(比重)에 의한 영향(影響)을 별로 받지 않았으며 굴참나무가 분자량(分子量) 400~2,000에 이르기까지 12~18%의 범위(範圍)내에 분포(分布)한 것을 제외(除外)하고는 대부분(大部分) 분자량(分子量) 600일 때 가장 높은 값을 나타내었고, 일반적(一般的)으로 활엽수재(濶葉樹材)가 침엽수재(針葉樹材)보다 높은 부피 팽윤율(澎潤率)을 보여 주었다. 3) 부피 팽윤(澎潤) 감소율(減少率)은 수종(樹種)에 따라 약간의 예외(例外)는 있었으나 대부분이 PEG 분자량(分子量) 400에서 최대치(最大値)를 나타내었고 삼나무의 경우 95.09%로서 최대치(最大値)를 나타내었으며, 산벚나무를 제외(除外)하고는 모두 80% 이상(以上)을 나타내었지만 분자량(分子量) 1,000 이상(以上)에서는 팽윤(膨潤) 감소율(減少率)이 70% 이하(以下)로 떨어졌다. 4) 치수 안정화(安定化) 효율(效率)은 비중(比重)이 큰 활엽수재(濶葉樹材)가 침엽수재(針葉樹材)보다 월등하게 높았으며 전건비중(全乾比重)이 0.89인 굴참나무는 전(全) 분자량(分子量) 범위(範圍)에 걸쳐 부피 팽윤감소율(澎潤減少率)이 1.6 이상(以上)이었는데, 일반적(一般的)으로 분자량(分子量)이 작을수록 우수(優秀)하였으나 분자량(分子量) 4,000 이상(以上)에서는 별로 차이(差異)를 나타내지 않았다. 5) 이상(以上)과 같은 결과(結果)를 종합(綜合) 분석(分析)한 바 PEG 처리(處理)에 의한 치수 안정화(安定化)는 활엽수재(濶葉樹材)의 경우, 특(特)히 효율적(效率的)이며 비록 팽윤감소율(澎潤減少率)이 분자량(分子量) 400에서 가장 높은 수치(數値)를 나타내었지만 PEG 주입율(注入率), 부피 팽윤율(澎潤率), 팽윤감소율(澎潤減少率) 및 치수 안정화(安定化) 효율(效率)을 감안할 때 분자량(分子量) 200~1,500 사이의 것을 적절(適切)한 비(比)로 혼합(混合) 사용(使用)하는 것이 바람직한 것으로 사료(思料)되며, 실용화(實用化)를 위해서는 각 분자량(分子量)의 PEG 혼합비율(混合比率)에 따른 부피 팽윤율(澎潤率), 팽윤감소율(澎潤減少率) 및 치수 안정화(安定化) 효율(效率)에 대한 보다 집중적(集中的)인 연구(硏究)가 요구(要求)된다.
