Extensive numerical experiments have been carried out to investigate effect of block size and fracture geometry on hydraulic characteristics of fractured rock masses based on connected pipe flow in DFN systems. Using two fracture sets, a total of 72 2-D fracture configurations were generated with different combinations of fracture size distribution and deterministic fracture density. The directional block conductivity including the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated fracture network system were calculated using the 2-D equivalent pipe network method. There exist significant effects of block size, orientation, density and size of fractures in a fractured rock mass on its hydraulic behavior. We have been further verified that it is more difficult to reach the REV size for the fluid flow network with decreasing intersection angle of two fracture sets, fracture plane density and fracture size distribution.

Many researches were carried out to estimate heat transfer rate on a circular cylinder in a uniform flow. Various empirical correlations were suggested in the past through expermental studies, however there are considerable discrepancies in the estimated values of heat transfer coefficient. Effects of variable properties of fluid on the heat transfer between a circular cylinder and the external uniform flow were numerically investigated in the present study. The flow and temperature fields were solved using a finite volume method for the uniform flow temperature of 200-900K and the wall temperature of 300-900K. The cold as well as the hot cylinders in the uniform flow of constant temperature were investigated. A unified correlation was obtained for the both cases.

Numerical study is carried out to investigate the effects of chemistry and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow field at various altitudes. Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows were solved by a fully-implicit TVD code based on the finite volume method. An infinitely fast chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thick media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. The plume flow fields of a kerosene-fueled rocket flying at Mach number zero at sea-level, 1.16 at altitude of 5.06 km and 2.90 at 17.34 km were numerically analyzed. Results showed the plume structures at different altitude conditions with the effects of chemistry and radiation. It is understood that the excess temperature by the chemical reactions in the exhaust gas may not be ignored in the view point of propulsion performance and thermal protection of the rocket base, especially at higher altitude conditions.

Present study examined the functionality of the solitary wave (tsunami) control of the two-rowed porous submerged breakwater by numerical experiments, using a numerical wave tank which is based on the Navier-Stokes equation to explain fluid fields and uses a Volume of Fluid (VOF) method to capture the free water surface. Solitary wave was generated by the internal wave source installed within the computational zone in the numerical wave tank and its wave transformations by structure were compared with those in the previous study. Comparisons with the precious numerical results showed a good agreement. Based on these results, several tow-dimensional numerical modeling investigations of the water fields, including wave transformations, reflection, transmission and energy flux, by the one- and two-rowed permeable submerged breakwater under solitary waves were performed. Even if, it is a research of the limited scope, in case of two-rowed permeable submerged breakwater with $h_0/h=0.925$ ($h_0$ is height of submerged breakwater and h is water depth), the wave height damping in range of $l/L_{eff}>0.4$($L_{eff}$ is effective distance of solitary wave) can reach nearly 60% of the incident wave height. In addition, it is found that reflection coefficient increases nearly 47% and transmission coefficient decreases nearly 18% than one-rowed one. The numerical results revealed that the tow-rowed submerged breakwater can control the incident solitary wave economically and more efficiently than the one-rowed one.

In this work, wave run-up heights and resultant wave forces on a vertical revetment due to tsunami (solitary wave) are investigated numerically using a numerical wave tank model called CADMAS-SURF (CDIT, 2001. Research and Development of Numerical Wave Channel (CADMAS-SURF). CDIT library, No. 12, Japan.), which is based on a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver, coupled to a volume of fluid (VOF) method. The third order approximate solution (Fenton, 1972. A ninth-order solution for the solitary wave. J. of Fluid Mech., Vol. 53, No.2, pp.257-271) is used to generate solitary waves and implemented in original CADMAS-SURF code. Numerical results of the wave profiles and forces are in good agreements with available experimental data. Using the numerical results, the regression curves determined from the least-square analysis are proposed, which can be used to determine the maximum wave run-up height and force on a vertical revetment due to tsunami. In addition, the capability of CADMAS-SURF is demonstrated for tsunami wave forces acting on an onshore structure using various configuration computations including the variations of the crown heights of the vertical wall and the position of the onshore structure. Based on the numerical results such as water level, velocity field and wave force, the direct effects of tsunami on an onshore structure are discussed.
The precise measurement of human emotion is of pivotal importance in the field of emotion science. Based on the perspective of psychoneuroimmunoendocrinology, human emotion is now considered to be measurable by body fluid. The biological molecule cortisol, which is known for the stress hormone, has been widely investigated to help researchers to estimate the stress loaded on human body. Until now, several measurement techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), fluorometric assay, and reverse phase chromatography have been developed. However, since these measurements are expensive, take relatively long time for an operation, and they are not portable, they are not appropriate for POCT (point of care testing). In this paper we demonstrate the performance of a miniaturized-microwave resonant device in the measurement of cortisol. Our method has many advantages in that it requires a small volume of sample, has fast response time, is easy to operate and needs no labeling process. Besides, it will shed a light on the measurement techniques for emotion science.

This study deals with jet impingement, which is extensively used in the process industries to achieve intense heating, cooling or drying rates and also widely employed as a test flow for turbulent models due to its complex flow configuration, on a flat plate by numerical methods. In this calculation, the finite volume method was employed to solve the Navier-stokes equation based on the non-orthogonal coordinate with non-staggered variable arrangement. To get a better understanding for the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of the turbulent jet impingements, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model was adapted and compared with the experimental data and the result of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical calculations were carried out with various flow rates, nozzle to plate distances. In the case of the axisymmetric jet impingement on a flat plate, $k-{\varepsilon}-{\overline{v^{'2}}}$ turbulent model showed better agreement with the experimental data than the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model in the prediction of the mean velocity profiles, the turbulent velocity profiles. the turbulent shear stress and the heat transfer rate. The highest heat transfer rate can be obtained when the impingement occurs within the potential core..

The aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel are studied to make clear the flow feature by solving the Navier-Stokes equation based on the finite volume method with unstructured grids. Reviews are made on with the vorticity, velocity, dynamic pressure, residual and drag, where the Reynolds numbers are 50 and 100. The flows for $Re{\succeq}50$ shows the vortex shedding in the wake, and the result is the same as the case of moving cylinder. The ground effect of flat bottom results in the growth of vortex, being generated in the upper side of the cylinder and elongated in the rear. As the cylinder approaches to wall, for example 0.6, the cylinder plays as a role of blockage to obstruct the flow between the cylinder and wall. The drag coefficients are compared with others' results to confirm the validity of the present numerical simulation.
The Numerical study has been carried out to investigate the effects of chemical reaction and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow-field at various altitudes. The theoretical formulation is based on the Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows along with the infinitely fast chemistry and thermal radiation. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume fully-implicit TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) code which uses Roe's approximate Riemann solver and MUSCL(Monotone Upstream-centered Schemes for Conservation Laws) scheme. LU-SGS (Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method is used for the implicit solution strategy. An equilibrium chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thin media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. In this study, kerosene-fueled rocket was assumed operating at O/F ratio of 2.34 with a nozzle expansion ratio of 6.14. Flight conditions considered were Mach number zero at ground level, Mach number 1.16 at altitude 5.06km and Mach number 2.9 at altitude 17.34km. Numerical results gave the understandings on the detailed plume structures at different altitude conditions. The diffusive effect of the thermal radiation on temperature field and the effect of chemical recombination during the expansion process could be also understood. By comparing the results from frozen flow and infinitely fast chemistry assumptions, the excess temperature of the exhaust gas resulting from the chemical recombination seems to be significant and cannot be neglected in the view point of performance, thermal protection and flow physics.
In order to reduce friction and improve reliability, researchers have applied various surface texturing methods to highly sliding machine elements such as mechanical seals and piston rings. Despite extensive theoretical research on surface texturing, previous numerical results are only applicable to isothermal and iso-viscous conditions. Because the lubricant flow pattern of textured bearing surfaces is much more complicated than that for non-textured bearings, the Navier?Stokes equation is more suitable than the Reynolds equation for the former. This study carries out a thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication analysis to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a single micro-dimpled parallel thrust bearing cell. The analysis involves using the continuity, Navier?Stokes, energy, temperature?viscosity relation, and heat conduction equations with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. This study discretizes these equations using the finite volume method and solves them using the SIMPLE algorithm. The results include finding the streamlines, pressure and temperature distributions, and variations in the friction force and leakage for various dimple radii and depths. Increasing the dimple radius and decreasing the depth causes a recirculation flow to form because of a strong vortex, and the oil temperature greatly increases compared with the non-textured case. The present numerical scheme and results are applicable to THD analysis of various surface-textured sliding bearings and can lead to further study.
