A cylindrical constant volume combustion chamber was used to investigate the flow characteristics at spark plug and the combustion characteristics of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times in quiescent mixture. The flow characteristics such as mean velocity and turbulence intensity was analyzed by hot wire anemometer. Combustion pressure development measured by piezoelectric pressure transducer and flame propagation acquired by ICCD camera were used to investigate the effect of initial pressure, excess air ratio and ignition times on pressure, combustion duration, flame speed and burning velocity. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity had the maximum value at 200 or 300ms and then decreased to near 0 value gradually after 3 seconds. Combustion duration, flame speed and burning velocity were observed to be promoted with excess air ratio of 1.1, lower initial pressure and ignition time of 300ms.
Under certain circumstance, premixed turbulent flame can be treated as wrinkled thin laminar flame and its motion in a hydrodynamic flow field has been investigated by employing G-equation. Past studies on G-equation successfully described certain aspects of laminar flame propagation such as effects of stretch on flame speed. In those studies, flames were regarded as a passive interface that does not influence the flow field. The experimental evidences, however, indicate that flow field can be significantly modified by the propagation of flames through the volume expansion of burned gas. In the present study, a new method to be used with G -equation is described to include the effect of volume expansion in the flame dynamics. The effect of volume expansion on the flow field is approximated by Biot-Savart law. The newly developed model is validated by comparison with existing analytical solutions of G -equation to predict flames propagating in hydrodynamic flow field without volume expansion. To further investigate the influence of volume expansion, present method was applied to initially wrinkled or planar flame propagating in an imposed velocity field and the average flame speed was evaluated from the ratio of flame surface area and projected area of unburned stream channel. It was observed that the initial wrinkling of flame cannot sustain itself without velocity disturbance and wrinkled structure decays into planar flame as the flame propagates. The rate of decay of the structure increased with volume expansion. The asymptotic change in the average burning speed occurs only with disturbed velocity field. Because volume expansion acts directly on the velocity field, the average burning speed is affected at all time when its effect is included. With relatively small temperature ratio of 3, the average flame speed increased 10%. The combined effect of volume expansion and flame stretch is also considered and the result implied that the effect of stretch is independent of volume release.

A numerical analysis of reactive flow in a liftoff flame is accomplished to elucidate the characteristics of flame propagation velocity and volume integral of reaction rate with the variation of nozzle diameter and fuel injection flow rate in a liftoff flame consisted with fuel rich region, fuel lean region and diffusion flame region. The increase of fuel injection velocity enhances flame propagation velocity for the selected three nozzle diameter(d=0.25, 0.30, 0.35mm), but its effect on the flame propagation velocity is not much greater than 4.3%. The increase of fuel flow rate is directly and linearly related with the volume reaction rate and so the volume reaction rate, not the flame propagation velocity, might be considered to accommodate the variation of fuel flow rate in a liftoff flame.

To study adiabatic shear band formation of tungsten heavy alloys, 5 prismatic specimens are loaded by high velocity impacts and treated as plane strain problems. Their volume percent of tungsten particles in WHA are 81%, 93% and 97% respectively and for the fixed 81% volume percent, small size particle model, large size particle model, undulated particle models are considered and then, the effects of particle's volume ratio, geometry and size to the formation of shear band are discussed.

In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. The velocity of upward bubble flow was calculated for two different experimental conditions:1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) bubble flow with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of buoyancy l0cm away from the nozzle. Whereas. kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow but after this point kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time In addition, as the flow rate increases the maximum velocity point moves to the nozzle. The velocity Profiles near free surface is extremely irregular due to surface flow. Gas volume fraction is high near the nozzle due to gas concentration. but decreases with the increasement of axial position. Gas volume fraction does not vary after the axial position, z=60 in spite of the increasement of flow.
The fabrication Process of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites by pressureless infiltration technique and the effects of additive Mg content and volume fraction of particulate reinforcement on mechanical and wear properties were investigated. It was found that the bending strength decreased with increasing volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. Whereas hardness increased with volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles. The decrement of strength in case of high volume fraction of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles was attributed to high porosity level. In terms of additive Mg content, $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing around 5~7wt% of additive Mg indicated the highest strength, and hardness values increased with additive Mg contents. Wear resistance of AC8A alloy were improved by reinforcement of $Al_2O_{3p}$ particles especially at high sliding velocity. Wear property of $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at slow velocity region. However a transition point of wear loss was found at middle velocity region which shows the minimum wear loss and wear loss at high velocity region exhibited almost same value as at slow velocity region, whereas wear loss of AC8A alloy almost linearly increased with sliding velocity. It was found that $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 20% exhibited abrasive wear surface regardless of sliding velocity and $Al_2O_{3p}$/AC8A composites containing $Al_2O_{3p}$ volume fraction of 40% showed slightly adhesive wear surface at low sliding velocity, and it progressed to severe wear as increasing the sliding velocity.

Cranke-Nicolson scheme in native OpenFOAM source libraries was not able to provide 2nd order temporal accuracy of velocity and pressure since the volume flux of convective nonlinear terms was 1st accurate in time. In the present study the simplest way of getting the volume flux with 2nd order accuracy was proposed by using old fluxes. A possible numerical instability originated from an explicit estimation of volume fluxes could be handled by introducing a weighting factor which was determined by observing the ratio of the finally corrected volume flux to the intermediate volume flux at the previous step. The new calculation of volume fluxes was able to provide temporally accurate velocity and pressure with 2nd order. The improvement of temporal accuracy was validated by performing numerical simulations of 2D Taylor-Green vortex of which an exact solution was known and 2D vortex shedding from a circular cylinder.
Experimental study was conducted to characterize the flow effect of particle migration in a microchannel which can be used to deliver small amount of liquids, drugs, biological agents and particles in microfluidic devices. Fluorescent particles of $1\{mu}m$ diameter were used to obtain velocity profiles of the fluid in which large particles of $10\{mu}m$ diameter were suspended at different volume fraction of 0.6 and $0.8\%$. Measurements were obtained by using micro-PIV system which contains a Nd:YAG laser with a light of 532-nm wavelength, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope and a cooled CCD camera to record particle images. The volume fraction of $\phi$ and the particle Reynolds number $Re_p$Rep were used as a parameter to assess the influence of the velocity profile of the suspensions. To expect the slip velocity between the particle and fluids, experiments were carried out at low volume fraction. It was shown that the velocity profile was not influenced by Rep but influenced by the volume fraction, which is in similar trend with the previous study.
This study is to investigate the characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in rolled super duplex stainless steel that was changed austenite-ferrite volume fraction by heat treatment. It was used two kinds of specimen the rolling and the transverse directions δ-phase fraction affected sound velocity hardness and Young's modulus. Characteristics of fatigue crack propagation was affected by anisotropy and (δ+γ) phase volume fractions.

This study shows that the vertical migration speed of sound scattering layers (SSLs), which is distributed in near Funka Bay, were measured by 3D velocity components acquired from a bottom moorng ADCP. While the bottom mooring type has a problem to measure the velocity vectors of sound scattering layer distributed near to surface, both the continuous vertical migration patterns and variability of backscatterers were routinely investigated as well. In addition, the velocity vectors were compared with the vertical migration velocity estimated from echograms of Mean Volume Backscattering Strength, and estimated to produce observational bias due to SSLs which is composed of backscatterers such as euphausiids, nekton, and fishes have swimming ability.
