  • Log normalized volume size distribution (dV/dlog$D_p$) with 52 size ranges from 0.5 to $20.0{\mu}m$ was measured for the cases of high $PM_{10}$ mass concentration (> $200{\mu}gm^{-3}$) using the Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS) at the Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Center (KGAWC) from 6 April, 2006 to 5 April, 2007. Black Carbon (BC), gaseous pollutants of $NO_X$ and $SO_2$ and ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent were also measured to examine the properties of the volume size distribution. From distinct difference of the high volume concentration (> $100{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$), the volume size distribution for each event day was clasified into four types: (1) Type 1 had the high volume concentration for supermicron particles from 2.3 to $6.0{\mu}m$ and maximum average volume concentration was $160.7{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$ at $3.5{\mu}m$. (2) Type 2 represented the high volume concentration in the both size range of submicron ($0.7-1.0{\mu}m$) and supermicron particles ($2.1-4.1{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$ and $136.2{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$ were found at 0.8 and $3.3{\mu}m$ respectively. (3) Type 3 showed the high volume concentration in the size range of $0.5-3.5{\mu}m$ and highest volume concentration of $201.1{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$ at the particle size bin of $0.8{\mu}m$. (4) Type 4 was characterized by the high volume concentration for the fine particles less than $1.2{\mu}m$ and very high concentration of $446.8{\mu}m^3cm^{-3}$. ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent, concentration of gaseous ($NO_X$ and $SO_2$), and particle (BC) pollutants suggested that Type 1 was a typical volume size distribution for the Asian dust and Type 3 provided transportation of air pollutants. The distribution in Type 2 found to have both characteristics of the Asian dust and air pollutants, and Type 4 was took place during the foggy atmosphere containing high density of local pollutants. Based on the properties of volume size distribution, we can identify the three major events contributing the increase of $PM_{10}$ mass concentration, and hope to provide a guideline for discriminating the Asian dust from high $PM_{10}$ events. More case studies and longeto advance this determination method.

  • Purpose: Fine dust is classified as a group 1 carcinogen and poses a significant environmental problem that urgently requires improvement to protect the environmental rights of citizens. Given the difficulty of implementing measures to reduce overseas sources of fine dust, it is essential to first devise specific measures to address domestic emission sources. As such, this study aims to analyze the correlation between earthwork volume control and fine dust concentration as preliminary management measures to reduce the impact of scattering dust at construction sites. Based on real-time air quality information, field management measures will be presented to mitigate the effects of dust emissions. Research design, data and methodology: As examples, we selected construction sites that had recently undergone small-scale environmental impact assessment consultations. The standard earthwork volume was classified into grades using 20% intervals, and we applied AERMOD to predict the weighted concentration of fine dust based on the earthwork volume class and analyzed its correlation. Results: The results of this study demonstrate a strong correlation between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration. By utilizing the correlation analysis between earthwork volume and fine dust concentration on-site, this finding can be utilized as an effective fine dust management plan. Conclusions: This involves determining the daily earthwork intensity based on real-time air quality information and implementing measures to reduce scattering dust.

  • The corelation between the indoor volume and the measured radon concentration has been analyzed by comparing the radon concentration and the indoor volume of apartment rooms in Jeonju City. We also measured the annual exposure dose based on the variation in indoor radon concentration over time. To do this, we took 8 larger rooms and 8 smaller rooms of apartment, respectively, as a sample. The average volume of the larger rooms and that of the smaller rooms were $31.59\;m^3$ and $16.82\;m^3$, respectively. The average radon concentration of the larger rooms and that of the smaller rooms turned out to be $71.73\;Bq/m^3$ and $108.51\;Eq/m^3$, respectively. indicating that indoor volume is in inverse proportion to the radon concentration, i.e., the bigger the ratio of the surface area/volume, the higher the indoor radon concentration. From the measurement of the variation in indoor radon concentration over time fur a single day, the average intraday radon concentration variation was found to be about $46.8\;Bq/m^3$. The highest level of concentration ($114.5\;Bq/m^3$) was measured between 8 and 10 AM and the lowest level of concentration ($67.7\;Bq/m^3$) between 2 and 4 PM. The annual exposure dose turned out to be in the range of 0.3 mSv/yr to 2.16 mSv/yr, showing that the dose in some apartments exceeded 1.3 mSv/yr, the numerical value presented by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).

  • The increase in traffic is a worldwide phenomenon. In Korea, it has been increased by 20% per annual in recent 1990’s and approximately 10 millions cars had been registered until 1997. This traffic could easily affect and contribute the local outdoor air quality(QAQ) concerned. The QAQ in highway in one of the examples and the subject in this study. The seoul tollgate located at the north-end of Keypngbu Highway was selected for the study. In case of highway tollgate, the local air pollution could be directly affected by the traffic to approach, wait and start the tollgate. Nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$) concentration exceeded the EAQS(Environmental Air Quality Standards), but overall indoor air quality was a little better than the outdoor air quality. The measured TSP concentration was much higher than that of the EAQS. To apply a management to a air quality problem of Seoul tollgate, it was predicted air quality with traffic volume and weather condition. It was calculated NO$_2$ emission with traffic volume and predicted in and out of booth by CALINE3 at the Seoul tollgate. To make a comparison between measured and predicted concentration, the prediction was good. It was shown that NO$_2$ concentration was high in the morning at the from Seoul direction and in the evening at the to Seoul direction. it was thought that NO$_2$ concentration variation was reflected according to the traffic volume.

  • Background: Percutaneous renal cyst sclerotherapy (PRCS) as a treatment for renal cysts is usually performed with a high concentration of ethanol (≥ 90%). This study reviewed cases in which a lower concentration of ethanol (83%) was used for the procedure in dogs. Methods: Records of cases of renal cysts treated by sclerotherapy using 83% ethanol in dogs were reviewed. Outcomes of the treatment were evaluated by comparing volumes of renal cysts before the procedure and the volumes after treatment, using ultrasound images with the volume reduction rates classified as follows: < 50% of initial volume (failed); ≥ 50% but < 80% of initial volume (partial success); ≥ 80% but < 95% of initial volume (great success); ≥ 95% of initial volume (complete success). Results: Out of nine dog kidneys, renal cysts sclerotherapy with 83% ethanol achieved partial success in one kidney, great success in four, and complete success in the other four. No side effect was observed. The mean of the volume-reduction rates was 90.00 ± 11.00 while the minimum and maximum reduction rates were 65% and 100%, respectively. Conclusions: The lower ethanol concentration (83%) is good for disinfecting kidneys in PRCS.

  • The study objective was to compare the interior greening volume ratios for the change in concentration of fine particle, temperature and relative humidity, and to identify the level of interior landscape volume ratio as a suitable condition to achieve the desired indoor properties. Plants were moved into a room (88m3) randomly. After moving, the volume ratio of the interior greening level was set at 0%, 1%, 2% and 3%. The concentration of fine particles was measured with a mini-volume portable air sampler (Air Metrics, USA). The temperature and relative humidity were recorded with a digital sensor (Kiwi-LTH, USA) during the experiment under different volume ratios with three replications. 1. The results of the change in concentration of the fine particles revealed a trend towards an increased volume ratio of interior greening with decreasing concentration of fine particles, compared to non-plants (0%). The concentration of fine particles at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was 55ug/$m^3$, 233ug/$m^3$, 40ug/$m^3$ and 30ug/$m^3$, respectively. 2. The change in temperature, at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was $21.2^{\circ}C$, $17.4^{\circ}C$, $16.7^{\circ}C$ and $18.9^{\circ}C$, respectively, in near interior greening, and $22.1^{\circ}C$, $18.7^{\circ}C$, $18.4^{\circ}C$ and $20.5^{\circ}C$ respectively, at a distance of 3m from the interior greening. These study results suggested that temperature was affected by volume ratio and distance from the interior greening. 3. The relative humidity, at volume ratios of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% was 34.2%, 32.5%, 36.7%, and 46.9%, respectively, in near interior greening, and 31.2%, 26.9%, 31.4% and 38.3%, respectively, at a distance of 3m from the interior greening. With increasing volume ratio of interior landscape, there were positive and significant results between the distance difference and the relative humidity more than temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the impact by comparing the concentration of indoor radon and look for ways to lower the concentration of indoor radon gas measurements of three variables, the year of completion, volume of the building and ventilation. Measurement target is six classrooms on the sixth floor of building that was constructed in 1973 and was extended in 2011. Selected classroom's volume is different. Four classrooms were selected to compare the radon concentration in accordance with the year of completion, Classrooms that is same year of completion were selected to compare the radon concentration in accordance with the volume, six classroom was performed closure and ventilation to compare radon concentration according to ventilation. Radon concentrations in accordance with the year of building completion showed a high concentration of radon in a building recently built. Also, Radon concentration in volume is high the smaller the volume. Radon concentration change according to ventilation showed a reduction of about 80% when the ventilation than during closing. Especially, The radon concentrations were high detected while the recently year of building completion and the smaller volume. Ventilation of the three variables is considered that can be expected to exposure reduction effect by radon affecting the greatest radon concentration reduction.

  • This study was carried out to investage the effect of cryoprotectant concentration and equilibration time on volume change and in vitro development of intact and bisected mouse embryos by rapid freezing. When compacted morulae were rapidly frozen in 3.0 to 4.0 glycerol or DMSO with 0.25M sucrose solution, the superior(P<0.05) post-thaw survival rate was obtained at the glycerol concentration of 4.0M(89.4%) than 3.0M(71.4%) or 5.0M(42.4%), but at the DMSO concentration of 3.0M(84.5%) than 4.0M(51.1%) or 5.0M(0.0%). The optimal equilibraton time for rapid freezing of ZP-free or bisected morulae in 4.0M glycerol with 0.25M sucrose was found tobe 3 minutes. The minimal volume of compacted morulaewhich corresponded with 61 to 62% of pre-equilibrated embryo volume was obtained from equilibration for 3 minutes in both 3.0 and 4.0M glycerol solutions with 0.25M sucrose.

  • This study is to estimate the ventilation volume by the traffic that originated from driving automobiles for two tunnels (Kugi tunnel and Kumhwa tunnel) that adopted natural ventilation system among tunnels of Seoul, and on the basis of which, we estimated the ventilation velume at various conditions. With the result of the estimation, we will present the basic method that can be operated with the optimum condition for the ventilation system. Estimating the predicted ventilation volume in the tennel by the pollutant concentration, we used traffic volume and CO emission data by the automobile speed and CO concentration in the tunnel. And, when we estimated the traffic ventilation volume by natural and traffic ventilation force, we used traffic volume, automobile speed, tunnel area, automobile area data and so on. As the result of simple regression between predicted ventilation volume and traffic ventilation volume, we attained the regression coefficient 0.88, and achieved the relation form that predicted ventilation volume equal 0.12x traffic ventilation volume-92, 000. Using this equation, we estimated the ventilation volume to satisfy the enviromnental standards of several space, and calculated the required volume for mechanical ventilation. Incase of Kumhwa Tunnel, there is a need of mechanical ventilation all day long to satisfy air quality standard 9 ppm for 8 hours average and 10 ppm for the indoor air quality standard of public facilities.

  • A sensitive concentration method utilising modified gas-purge microsyringe extraction (GP-MSE) was developed. Concentration (reduction in volume) to a microlitre volume was achieved. PAHs were utilised as semivolatile analytes to optimise the various parameters that affect the concentration efficiency. The injection rate and temperature were the key factors that affected the concentration efficiency. An efficient concentration (75.0-96.1%) of PAHs was obtained under the optimised conditions. The method exhibited good reproducibility (RSD values that ranged from 1.5 to 9.0%). The GP-MSE concentration method enhances the volume reduction (concentration factor), leading to a low method detection limit ($0.5-15ngL^{-1}$). Furthermore, this method offers the advantage of small-volume sampling, enabling even the detection of diurnal hourly changes in the concentration of PAHs in ambient air. Utilising this method in combination with GC-MS, the diurnal hourly flux of PAHs from the gas phase of ambient air was measured. Indeed, the proposed technique is a simple, fast, low-cost and environmentally friendly.
