This paper proposes a nonisolated, bidirectional, soft-switching DC - DC converter with PWM plus phase shift (PPS) control. The proposed converter has an input-parallel/output-series configuration and can achieve the interleaving effect and high voltage gains, resulting in decreased voltage ratings in all related devices. The proposed converter can operate under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions for all switches in continuous conduction mode. The power flow of the proposed converter can be controlled by changing the phase shift angle, and the duty is controlled to balance the voltage of four high voltage side capacitors. The PPS control device of the proposed converter is simple in structure and presents symmetrical switching patterns under a bidirectional power flow. The PPS control also ensures ZVS during charging and discharging at all loads and equalizes the voltage ratings of the output capacitors and switches. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, an experimental investigation of a 2 kW prototype is performed in both charging and discharging modes under different load conditions and a bidirectional power flow.
A new DC/DC converter with zero voltage switching is proposed for applications with high input voltage and high load current. The proposed converter has two circuit modules that share load current and power rating. Interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) is adopted to generate switch control signals. Thus, ripple currents are reduced at the input and output sides. For high-voltage applications, each circuit module includes two half-bridge legs that are connected in series to reduce switch voltage rating to $V_{in}/2$. These legs are controlled with the use of asymmetric PWM. To reduce the current rating of rectifier diodes and share load current for high-load-current applications, two center-tapped rectifiers are adopted in each circuit module. The primary windings of two transformers are connected in series at the high voltage side to balance output inductor currents. Two series capacitors are adopted at the AC terminals of the two half-bridge legs to balance the two input capacitor voltages. The resonant behavior of the inductance and capacitance at the transition interval enable MOSFETs to be switched on under zero voltage switching. The circuit configuration, system characteristics, and design are discussed in detail. Experiments based on a laboratory prototype are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.
In recent years, multilevel technology has become an effective and practical solution in the field of moderate and high voltage applications. This paper discusses an APF with a three-level NPC inverter. Obviously, the application of such converter to APFs is hindered by the problem of the voltage unbalance of DC capacitors, which leads to system instability. This paper comprehensively analyzes the theoretical limitations of the neutral-point voltage balancing problem for tracking different harmonic currents utilizing current switching functions from the space vector PWM (SVPWM) point of view. The fluctuation of the neutral point caused by the load currents of certain order harmonic frequency is reported and quantified. Furthermore, this paper presents a close-loop digital control algorithm of the DC voltage for this APF. A PI controller regulates the DC voltage in the outer-loop controller. In the current-loop controller, this paper proposes a simple neutral-point voltage control method. The neutral-point voltage imbalance is restrained by selecting small vectors that will move the neutral-point voltage in the direction opposite the direction of the unbalance. The experiment results illustrate that the performance of the proposed approach is satisfactory.
Dealing with the DC link fault poses a technical problem for an HVDC based on a modular multilevel converter. The fault suppressing mechanisms of several sub-module topologies with DC fault current blocking capacity are examined in this paper. An improved half-bridge sub-module topology with double direction control switch is also designed to address the additional power consumption problem, and a sub-module topology called hybrid double direction blocking sub module (HDDBSM) is proposed. The DC fault suppression characteristics and sub-module capacitor voltage balance problem is also analyzed, and a self-startup method is designed according to the number of capacitors. The simulation model in PSCAD/EMTDC is built to verify the self-startup process and the DC link fault suppression features.
This paper presents the control and implementation of the dual-stator-winding induction generator for variable frequency AC (VFAC) generating system. This generator has two sets of stator windings embedded into the stator slots. The power winding produces the VFAC power to feed the loads, and the control winding is connected to the static excitation controller to control the generator for output voltage regulation with speed and load variations. On the basis of the idea of power balance, an instantaneous slip frequency control (ISFC) strategy using the information of both the output voltage and the output power is used in this system. A series of experiments is carried out on a 15 kW prototype for verification. Results show that the system has good static and dynamic performance in a wide speed range, which demonstrates that the ISFC strategy is suitable for this system.

Due to the advantage of reducing the voltage applied to the switch semiconductor, the input series and output parallel combination is widely used in systems with high input voltage and large output current. On the other hand, the LLC converter is widely used as a high-efficiency power converter, and when connected by ISOP combination, there is a possibility that input voltage imbalance may occur due to a mismatch of passive devices. To avoid damaging the switching device, this study analyzed the DC-link voltage imbalance of a high-capacity supply using an ISOP LLC converter. In addition, the case where DC-link unbalance control was applied and the case not applied was analyzed respectively. Based on this analysis, an initial start-up algorithm was proposed to prevent input power semiconductor device damage due to DC-link over-voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified through simulations and experiments.
This paper focuses on voltage control schemes for multi-terminal low-voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution systems. In a multi-terminal LVDC distribution system, there can be multiple AC/DC converters that connect the LVDC distribution system to the AC grids. This configuration can provide enhanced reliability, grid-supporting functionality, and higher efficiency. The main applications of multi-terminal LVDC distribution systems include flexible power exchange between multiple power grids and integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) using DC voltages such as photovoltaics (PVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs). In multi-terminal LVDC distribution systems, voltage regulation is one of the most important issues for maintaining the electric power balance between demand and supply and providing high power quality to end customers. This paper focuses on a voltage control method for multi-terminal LVDC distribution system that can efficiently coordinate multiple control units, such as AC/DC converters, PVs and BESSs. In this paper, a control hierarchy is defined for undervoltage (UV) and overvoltage (OV) problems in LVDC distribution systems based on the control priority between the control units. This paper also proposes methods to determine accurate control commands for AC/DC converters and DERs. By using the proposed method, we can effectively maintain the line voltages in multi-terminal LVDC distribution systems in the normal range. The performance of the proposed voltage control method is evaluated by case studies.
For fast response of the dc output voltage in PWM converter, the relationship of power balance of both the input and output should be introduced to the system modeling. Then, a nonlinear control theory using state feedback linearization is useful to control the system. By nonlinear control, the voltage response can be fast, so the size of the output filter capacitor can be reduced as long as the same response is kept. The validity of the proposed scheme is shown from the simulation results.
This paper presents a new PFC control method which replaces a fast line current measurement with a filtered load current measurement. Using the power balance relation between the input and the output of the boost converter. the input current can be described as the function of load current. Thus the PWM signal which effects the switching control of the boost converter is generated using the PFC input voltage, the PFC output voltage and the load current as input variables. By using a filter between the bridge rectifier and a dc-to-dc converter, the input voltage of the dc-to-dc converter is forced to always maintain above zero volt. Then the input current traces a sinewave in phase. The proposed scheme accomplishes a very high power factor and a low harmonic distortion of the line current. The validity of this scheme is demonstrated through simulation.
In this paper, a novel DC link voltage control scheme for a single-phase PWM converter is proposed. The main idea of the control scheme is eliminating the effect of dc link voltage harmonics by using power balance of input side and output side. With the proposed strategy, faster transient response than that of conventional method using low-pass filter can be obtained. In addition, a half period current control, based at equal switching frequency, is proposed. The validity of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation results for GTO PWM converter system.
