  • In this study, a zero-crossing spike current issue in a totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter is comprehensively investigated for the first time. Spike current occurs when input voltage crosses zero, becomes a noise source, and causes severe common mode emission issues. A generation mechanism for electromagnetic interference (EMI) is presented to investigate the EMI problem caused by zero-crossing issue, and a noise spectrum due to this issue is predicted by a theoretical analysis based on the Fourier coefficient of an approximate spike current waveform. Furthermore, a noise reduction method is proposed and then improved to reduce the spike current. Experimental measurements are implemented on a GaN-based totem-pole bridgeless PFC converter, and the spike current can be effectively suppressed through the proposed method. Furthermore, the noise spectrums measured without and with the reduced zero-crossing spike current are compared. Experimental results validate the analysis of the noise spectrum caused by the zero-crossing spike current issue.

  • A power-reduction technique for full-flash A/D converters is proposed. As the resolution of a full-flash A/D converter increases linearly, the number of comparators increases exponentially. The power dissipation is generally larger than other A/D converter architectures because there are many comparators, and they are operating continuously. In this proposed architecture, only a selected number of conmarators are made to operate instead of activating all the comparators of the full-flash A/D convertor. To determine whichcomparators should be activated, voltage levelfider circuits are used. A new clock driver is developed to suppress the dynamic glitch noise which is fed back into the input stage of the comparator. By using this clock driver, the glitch noise in the current source is reduced to one fourth of that when the typical clock signal is applied. The proposed architecture has been implemented with 1.2 m 5GHz BiCMOS technology. The maximum conversion speed is 350Msamples/s. and dissipates only 900mW.

  • High current coil power supply for superconductivity coil of tokamak requires fast dynamics performance of di/dt and smooth change over of current direction. To meet the specification high performance DSP-based controller Is designed for 12-pulse thyristor dual converter with interphase transformer(IPT). Not only the total current of Y and $\Delta$ converter units but also the difference for those should be regulated fast and accurately. Proportional and integral controller is designed for current difference control and the controller output is compensated to $\Delta$ converter. The source voltage phase angle detection and gate pulse generation algorithm are implemented in software for higher reliability of current control. The current error Is reduced by selection of appropriate initial gating angle during the transient of change over of current direction between thyristor converters.

  • Fuel cell power system is one of the most promising energy source for the alternative energy because it has unique advantages such as high energy density, no power drop during operation, and feasible to make compact size. However, due to very low response time, fuel cell is difficult to correspond to drastic load changes and start-up operation. For solving these problem, fuel cell power system must include energy storage device such as Li-Poly battery or super capacitor. Therefore, bi-directional DC-DC converter must be required for this storage device and fuel cell-PCS control. This paper presents a design and modeling of the bi-directional DC/DC converter. Firstly, we present modeling the boost and buck mode of the bi-directional converter through both PWM switch model and state space averaging technique. Secondly, in order to minimize output ripple and transient response overshoot, we have two identical DC-DC converters interleaved and adopt two-loop voltage-current controller. The proposed bi-directional DC-DC converter's modeling method and control design have been verified with computer simulation and experimentation.
