Purpose: We tried to establish the reproducibility of the measurement of maximal elastance (Emax) and to compare the degree of the reproducibility of two estimation methods: single pressure-volume loop method and parameter optimization method. Materials and methods: In 47 patients (42 males and 5 females, $53{\pm}10$ years old) with suspected coronary artery disease (election fraction; 22-68%), gated Tc-99m MIBI myocardial SPECT and arterial tonometry were acquired. In 11 patients among these 47 patients, gated SPECT and tonometry were performed twice consecutively with patients in situ. Emax and void volume (Vo) were estimated using single pressure-volume loop method of Lee and parameter optimization method based on linear approximation of Yoshizawa. Correlation between the consecutive measurements by each method and correlation between the two estimation methods were compared. Results: Reproducibility of Emax (r=0.96) and Vo (r=0.99) by single pressure-volume method was better than the reproducibility of Emax (r=0.89) and Vo (r=0.64) by parameter optimization method. Correlations of Emax and Vo were fair between the two methods. The correlation of Emax (r=0.77) was better than that of Vo (r=0.55). Conclusion: Reproducibility of Emax measurement by single pressure-volume loop method using gated myocardial SPECT and arterial tonometry was excellent. Reproducibility by parameter optimization method was also fair but was less than that achieved by single pressure-volume method.
In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials is investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, $[O_4]_{ns},{\;}[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ and $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$ (n=2 to 8). Parameters such as fibre volume fraction, void content, fibre waviness and interlaminar stresses, influencing compressive strength with increasing laminate thickness are also studied experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore the stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates are examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques are used; (1) ply-level technique $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]s$ and (2) sublaminate level technique $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$. An apparent thickness effect existes in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens ($[O_4]_{ns}) and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ($[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$). Fibre waviness and void content are found to be main parameters contributing to the thickness effect on the compressive failure strength. However, the compressive strength of the sublaminate level scaled specimens ($[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$) is almost unaffected regardless of the specimen thickness (since ply thickness remains constant). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sublaminate level scaled specimens are slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The reason for this effect is explained by the fibre waviness, void content, free edge effect and stress redistribution in blocked $0^{\circ}$ plies and unblocked $0^{\circ}$ plies. The measured failure strengths are compared with the predicted values.
We purified and characterized a crude polysaccharide from Spirodela polyrhiza with anti-complement activities. The crude polysaccharide fraction (SP-0) which had potential anti-complement activity was extracted in hot water for 4 hrs at 10$0^{\circ}C$. The ethanol-precipitate, the crude polysaccharide traction (SP-1), showed a potent anti-complement activity. Further purification of the crude polysaccharide (SP-1) was carried out by cetavlon, ion exchange chromatography and gel column chromatography. Among cetavlon fractions, SP-4 showed the most potent anti-complement activity. When 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL of SP-4 was incubated with an equal volume of normal human serum (NHS), the TCH$_{50}$ was reduced by about 78%. When the SP-4 fraction was further purified by DEAE-Sepharose (Cl$^{[-10]}$ ), the SP-4IIa, SP-4IIb and SP-4IIc, absorbed fractions, were almost the same as the anti-complement activities of SP-4. SP-4IIc, having the greatest potential activation and the highest yield by ion exchange chromatography, was further purified by gel column chromatography on a Sepharose CL-6B column. Four polysaccharide fractions of SP-4IIc-1, SP-4IIc-2, SP-4IIc-3 and SP-4IIc-4 were obtained, consisting mainly of arabinose, rhamnose, galactose and glucose, with approximate molecular weights of about 305,000, 132,000, 64,000 and 12,000, respectively. Among these subfractions, SP-4IIc-1 had the most potent anti-complement activity. When the SP-4IIc-1 aggregate was applied to a gel column chromatography in 10 mM and 50 mM NaCl solution, the position of the peak fractions shifted to a low molecular weight region, and the molecular weight of SP-4IIc-1 decreased with increased NaCl concentration in the gel column chromatography. It was found that the self-aggregation formed spontaneously in void volume by gel column chromatography using Sepharose CL-6B in water and the self-aggregation significantly affected the anti-complement function.

Bovine milk xanthine oxidase (E.C.1.1.3.22, XO) purchased from Sigma Chemical Co. had the three protein fragments below 150 kDa on 7.5% SDS-PAGE, which did not show enzyme activity. To remove these fragments, the enzyme preparation was further purified through Sephadex G-200 column chromatography. Two peaks exhibiting enzymatic activity were separated very closely to the void volume, which were revealed as two different enzyme forms, dimeric and monomeric, confirmed by activity staining on native PAGE. Anti sera-against each of the two enzyme forms were raised by subcutaneous injection at multiple sites on the back of rabbits during 4 weeks. On the immunodiffusion test, it was found that both of the antisera of the two forms could react with each other, which implied that their epitopes were identical In the Western blot analysis of mouse liver cytosol fraction, it was found that rabbit anti-XO antibody bound well with the protein band of monomeric mouse liver XO of about 150kDa. Based on this result, mouse liver cDNA 1 ibrary was screened by in situ hybridizat ion wi th rabbi t anti -XO antibody as probe. Through the immunological screening, recombinant phages giving positive signal by the production of XO were selected and further purified. To validate these clones, purified phages were lysogenized in E. coli Y1089 and their lysates were analysed for enzyme activity and immunoreactivity, It was verified that lysates of the purified recombinant phage lysogens exhibited the enzymatic activity as well as bound wi th XO antibody, when induced by IPTG. The above results assert that selected recombinant phage carries mouse liver XO gene.

Recently, polyurethane foam has been used in various industry fields to preserve temperature environment of structures, and a wide range of loads from the static to the dynamic are imposed on the material during a life period. The biggest characteristic of polyurethane foam is porosity as being polymeric material, and it is generally known that insulation performance of the material strongly depends on internal void size. In addition, polyurethane foam's mechanical behavior has high dependence on strain rate and temperature as well as being highly non-linear ductile for compression. In the non-linear compressive behavior, volume fraction of voids and elastic modulus decrease as strain increases. Therefore, in this study, temperature-dependent viscoplastic-damage constitutive model was developed to describe the non-linear compressive behavior with the aforementioned features of polyurethane foam.
Composite ablative tubes required capabilities of ablative and structural characteristics were fabricated through filament winding technique and several experiments were conducted to evaluate the structural performance of composite ablative tubes. For this purpose, manufacturing procedures were briefly described and then resin digestion method was applied to measure the fiber volume fraction and the void content of composite ablative tubes. The configuration of tensile specimen fur composite ablative tubes with not losing the continuity of reinforced fibers was suggested by evaluating mechanical properties of several types of the specimen with different widths. Also, suitable processing variables for composite ablative tubes were determined by evaluating mechanical properties of several types of the specimen with different processing variables. In addition, acoustic emission signals were obtained during the proof test and could be applicable to study the crack initiation and the damage mode of composite ablative tubes. Finally, the structural reliability of composite ablative tubes could be verified to satisfy design requirements through the proof and burst tests.

An overview is given on the work of the Laboratory of Nuclear Energy Systems at ETH, Zurich (ETHZ) and of the Laboratory of Thermal Hydraulics at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland on tight-lattice bundles. Two-phase flow in subchannels of a tight triangular lattice was studied experimentally and by computational fluid dynamics simulations. Two adiabatic facilities were used: (1) a vertical channel modeling a pair of neighboring sub-channels; and (2) an arrangement of four subchannels with one subchannel in the center. The first geometry was equipped with two electrical film sensors placed on opposing rod surfaces forming the subchannel gap. They recorded 2D liquid film thickness distributions on a domain of $16{\times}64$ measuring points each, with a time resolution of 10 kHz. In the bubbly and slug flow regime, information on the bubble size, shape, and velocity and the residual liquid film thickness underneath the bubbles were obtained. The second channel was investigated using cold neutron tomography, which allowed the measurement of average liquid film profiles showing the effect of spacer grids with vanes. The results were reproduced by large eddy simulation + volume of fluid. In the outlook, a novel nonadiabatic subchannel experiment is introduced that can be driven to steady-state dryout. A refrigerant is heated by a heavy water circuit, which allows the application of cold neutron tomography.
PCM (Prepreg Compression Molding) process is a high-speed molding technology that can manufacture high-quality CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) parts. Compared to the autoclave process, it generates less waste and can significantly reduce cycle time, so various studies are being conducted in the aerospace and automobile industries. In this study, in order to improve the quality of the PCM process, a molding method was developed to increase the compression pressure of the press step by step according to the curing behavior of the prepreg. It was confirmed that this multi-stage compression molding technology is a good means to produce high-quality CFRP products and shorten cycle times. And, the laminated prepreg at room temperature was immediately put into the mold and preheated and molded at the same time, so that it could be molded without a separate preheating process. In addition, as a result of applying the same process conditions optimized for flat plate molding to three-dimensional shapes, a product similar to a flat plate in appearance could be made without the process of establishing process conditions.
Generally, the sediments contain significant water, clay, colloidal fraction and contaminants, and can result in soft strata with high initial void, and its potential hazards in subsurface environments exist. Electrokinetic technique has been used in sedimentation for volume reduction of slurry tailing wastes and in remediation for extraction of contaminants from contaminated soils. In this research, the coupled effects of sedimentation and remediation of contaminated sediments are focused using electrokinetic sedimentation and remediation techniques from experimental aspects. A series of laboratory experiments including variable conditions such as initial solid content of the specimen, concentration level of the contaminant, and magnitude of applied voltage are performed with the contaminated sediment specimens mixed with ethylene glycol. Commercially available high specification Kaolin was used to simulate slurried sediment. From the test results, the settlement of specimen increases with increasing of applied voltage and decreasing of solid content and contamination level. The density of specimen increases due to settlement of specimen in the process of electrokinetic sedimentation and decreases due to extraction of organic contaminant in the process of electrokinetic remediation.
Powder metallurgy has been employed for the development of SiC particle reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites by means of hot isotropic pressing and vacuum hot pressing. A material model based on micro-mechanical approach then has been presented for the processes. Densification occurs by the inelastic flow of matrix materials during the consolidation, and consequently it depends on many process conditions such as applied pressure, temperature and volume fraction of reinforcement. The model is implemented into finite element software so that the process simulation can be performed enabling the predicted relative density to be compared with experimental data. In order to determine the performance of finished products, further tensile test has been conducted using the developed specimens. The effect of internal void of the materials on mechanical properties therefore can be investigated.
