  • The Ministry of Education has been quick to apply National Competency Standars (NCS) to industrial sites and educational·training institutions in order to resolve discrepancies between practical affairs in industrial sites and vocational education, training & requirements. Full implementation of NCS-based curriculum in vocational education of vocational high schools has been mandatory since 2018. This research used a region-stratified sample of 350 from teachers in 'machinery' and 'machine·metal' majors in mechanical departments of vocational high schools to investigate the awareness of practical courses for metal machining among the teachers. The research results are as follows. First, a majority of the respondents indicated the availability of turning process, milling process, computer integrated manufacturing and measuring courses in mechanical departments. Second, capabilities required by the industry are considered most in selecting practical courses and competence units. Third, positive changes with the introduction of practical courses in the school education are students' practical skills improvement and satisfaction of industrial requirements. Fourth, negative changes with the introduction of practical courses in the school education are too difficult learning modules used in practical courses for students and students' difficulty in learning because of the difference between equipment in schools and industrial equipment in learning modules. Fifth, teachers' satisfaction with practical courses classes and overall conditions is above the average, and their satisfaction with the level of practical courses and bookbinding or purchase of rearranged textbooks of practical courses is below the average. Therefore, application conditions of above-mentioned representative 4 practical courses should be examined and taken care of for consistent improvement to stabilize NCS-based educational courses in mechanical departments.

  • Background: Young male and female workers are over-represented in statistics concerning negative outcomes of poor work environment and risky work. Young workers often have low awareness of risk, a lack of safety training, and inadequate introduction to the work. The aim of this study was to identify the knowledge and experiences of pupils of vocational schools concerning potential work environment risks in their future work. Methods: The study design was a dual one, and included a questionnaire and focus group interviews. The study group consisted of 239 pupils from 10 upper secondary schools, who were graduating pupils in four vocational programs: the Industrial Technology Programme, the Restaurant Management and Food Programme, the Transport Programme, and the Handicraft Programme (in which students specialize in wood products). The upper secondary schools were located in the central region of Sweden. Results: The pupils had limited knowledge that employers must, by law, conduct risk analyses and prevent risks. Many felt that they themselves are mainly responsible for performing their tasks safely. Pupils in all programs mentioned acute risk as the greatest risk at work. The theoretical education about safety at work was provided in the $1^{st}$ year of the 3-year vocational programs. Conclusion: A systematic approach to pupils' training in work environment, which is a basis for a safe and healthy workplace, is lacking. The study findings indicate that pupils are offered knowledge far from that intended by laws and by state-of-the-art occupational health risk research.

  • Background: By examining the safety issues involved in on-site training sessions conducted at specialized vocational high schools, and by analyzing the effects of non-destructive testing (NDT) safety training, this study aims to contribute to ensuring the general safety of high school students. Materials and Methods: Students who expressed an interest in participation were surveyed regarding current NDT training practices, as well as NDT safety training. A total of 361 students from 4 schools participated in this study; 37.7% (136 students) were from the Seoul metropolitan area and 62.3% (225 students) were from other areas. Results and Discussion: Of the respondents, 2.2% (8 students) reported having engaged in NDT. As a result of safety training, statistically significant improvements were observed in most areas, except for individuals with previous NDT experience. The areas of improvement included safety awareness, acquisition of knowledge, subjective knowledge levels, objective knowledge levels, and adjustments to existing personal attitudes. Conclusion: Even at absolutely necessary observation-only training sessions, it is crucial that sufficient safety training and additional safety measures be adequately provided.

Achieving positive career development is one of the most crucial tasks during adolescence. In both national and personal perspectives, the vocational identity of science-gifted students provides some important points to discuss. The purpose of this study is to examine the vocational identity of science-gifted students. Participants included 103 science-gifted students who have received an acceptance letter from a science-gifted school. The modified VISA (Vocational Identity Status Assessment) model was used to analyze the vocational identities of gifted students with 'a letter to myself in the future'. The study found that vocational identity status of the science-gifted students was determined as Foreclosed and Searching Moratorium. The science-gifted students demonstrated more Commitment than Exploration and Reconsideration. They also showed higher levels in Career Identification, In-Narrow Exploration, and Career Flexibility. In addition, they shared common orientations in vocational identity such as strong enthusiasm, challenging limits, and responsibility towards humanity. We expect that this study will contribute to the social interest of science-gifted students in the area of career education. In order for science-gifted students to nurture their full potential with a deeper awareness of education, follow-up studies have to be conducted to provide greater and ideal career education.
