  • Purpose : Mitochondrial disorders are a clinical entity characterized by diverse symptoms and signs of involvement of various systems. Furthermore, the disorders are known to show ophthalmologic manifestations as well as neurological findings. Visually evoked potential is a sensitive measure to check the integrity of the visual pathway. In this study, we have investigated the value of visually evoked potential in mitochondrial disorders with respiratory chain defects. Methods : Nineteen patients diagnosed with mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I defect as confirmed by spectrophotometric enzyme assay in muscle samples were enrolled for this study. The patients underwent a visually evoked potential study. We classified the results into four groups and compared these with clinical ophthalmologic findings. Results : Among the 19 patients, 14 showed abnormal visually evoked potential findings. Seven patients showed abnormal clinical ophthalmologic findings. All patients with abnormal ophthalmologic findings showed abnormal visually evoked potential findings. Among the 12 patients with normal ophthalmologic findings, seven showed abnormal results in visually evoked potential. Conclusion : Visually evoked potential study could be used as an effective screening tool for mitochondrial disorders to detect ophthalmologic and neurological abnormalities.

  • In Visually Evoked Potentials(VEP) or Auditory Evoked Potentials(AEP), the components by the stimulation and the components which are irrelevant to the stimulation(noise or nonstationary spontaneous EEG) are mixed together. So one should average hundreds of EP waves to extract the components by the stimulation only. In this study, we have classified EP's, which are the responses of the different stimulations and different states of subjects. To classify the EP waves, the cross-correlation coefficients and neural network method(error back propagation) are used and compared.

  • The observations of difference and similarity in brain activities involved in processing different languages have fundamental importance in cognitive neuroscience. The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference and similarity in temporal brain activation patterns due to the language difference during visual perception of Korean and English words under priming. Especially, we tried to find the difference in evoked spectral power in gamma-band, which is known to reflect feature binding. The stimulation was visually presented as word pairs belonging to same or different categories so that N400 event-related potential(ERP) was evoked. Average ERP analysis and spectral analysis of gamma-band activity(GBA) were performed on 12 normal Korean subjects. Several ERP components such as P1, N1, N400, and P600 could be identified consistently, and the differences in N1, N400, and P600 were observed. From the spectral analysis, we found that the evoked GBA(eGBA) was significantly larger for English at ${\sim}100$ ms poststimulus. The latency of the eGBA was also considerably delayed for English. Overall, the results on the ERP components and eGBA analyses seem to be commensurate with subjects' familiarity of each language, and the difficulty of perceiving words of each language. The methods of this study can also be applied for clinical purposes considering that the language-related processing can be greatly altered for the patients with neurological or psychiatric diseases.

  • BCI (Brain Computer Interface) is technology to control external devices by measuring the brain activity, such as electroencephalogram (EEG), so that handicapped people communicate with environment physically using the technology. Among them, EEG is widely used in various fields, especially robot agent control by using several signal response characteristics, such as P300, SSVEP (Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential) and motor imagery. However, in order to control the robot agent without any constraint and precisely, it should take advantage of not only a signal response characteristic, but also combination. In this paper, we try to use the fusion of motor imagery and P300 from EEG for practical use of robot control in BCI environment. The results of experiments are confirmed that the recognition rate decreases compared with the case of using one kind of features, whereas it is able to classify each both characteristics and the practical use technology based on mobile robot and wireless BCI measurement system is implemented.
