  • Recently, the form of traditional families has been disintegrated due to low birthrate, aging, declining marriage, individualism, etc. In particular, the number of single households has increased due to the shift to a low-growth advanced economic structure, women's social participation, diversification of lifestyles, and so on. According to the National Statistical Office, the number of single households living alone by 2015 is estimated to be about 5,060,000 households, which is estimated to account for 34.3% of all households, which has greatly increased compared with about 660,000 (6.9%) in 1985. However, the housing market has not been able to respond to such social changes. Therefore, in this research, we presented a plan to visualize the public data of single household in Seoul city and prediction result of occupancy shape for the purpose of supporting decision making of single household consumers.

  • The interaction of planar shock wave with rectangular water column is investigated numerically. The flow phenomenon like reflection, transmission, cavitation, recirculation of shock wave, and large negative pressure due to expansion waves was discussed qualitatively and quantitatively. The numerical simulation was performed in a shock tube with a water column, and planar shock was initiated with a pressure ratio of 10. Three cases of the water column with different thicknesses, namely 0.5D, 1D, and 2D, were installed and studied. Water naturally has a higher acoustic impedance than air and mitigates the shock wave considerably. The numerical simulations were modelled using Eulerian and Volume of fluids multiphase models. The Eulerian model assumes the water as a finite structure and can visualize the shockwave propagation inside the water column. Through the volume of fluids model, the stages of breakup of the water column and mitigation effects of water were addressed. The numerical model was validated against the experimental results. The computational results show that the installation of a water column significantly impacts the mitigation of shock wave.

  • Urban flood simulation plays a vital role in national flood early warning, prevention and mitigation. In recent studies on 2-dimensional flood modeling, the integrated run-off inundation model is gaining grounds due to its ability to perform in greater computational efficiency. The adaptive quadtree shallow water numerical technique used in this model implements the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) in this simulation, a procedure in which the grid resolution is refined automatically following the flood flow. The method discounts the necessity to create a whole domain mesh over a complex catchment area, which is one of the most time-consuming steps in flood simulation. This research applies the dynamic grid refinement method in simulating the recent extreme flood events in Metro Manila, Philippines. The rainfall events utilized were during Typhoon Ketsana 2009, and Southwest monsoon surges in 2012 and 2013. In order to much more visualize the urban flooding that incorporates the flow within buildings and high-elevation areas, Digital Surface Model (DSM) resolution of 5m was used in representing the ground elevation. Results were calibrated through the flood point validation data and compared to the present flood hazard maps used for policy making by the national government agency. The accuracy and efficiency of the method provides a strong front in making it commendable to use for early warning and flood inundation analysis for future similar flood events.

  • The broth microdilution technique used to measure the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of natural compounds against bacteria is problematic: it is difficult to visualize bacterial growth due to the color of the natural compound. Therefore, the use of a colorimetric method with a redox indicator by broth microdilution can simplify it and increase its objectivity. This study evaluated the usefulness of the colorimetric method in measuring the MIC of Phellinus baumii against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The inhibition in disc diffusion method was observed from $8,192{\mu}g/mL$ P. baumii in all 10 MRSA isolates examined; however, the MIC ranges of the 10 MRSA isolates was $512{\sim}2,048{\mu}g/mL$ by broth microdilution using a colorimetric method; with the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) indicator. In addition, the MIC of P. baumii by broth microdilution using MTT as indicator yielded excellent results. However, the 2, 3, 5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) results could not be determined due to the color of the TTC indicator. The MICs of four antibiotics against MRSA using MTT or TTC were equal to those determined by visual interpretation. In conclusion, to evaluate the antibacterial effects of a natural compound, the broth microdilution technique is considered to be better than the disc diffusion method. Moreover, to resolve the problems caused by the colors of natural compounds, a colorimetric method such as that using MTT may be very valuable.

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether a DNA comet assay could be applied for identifying irradiated pork and beef. Pork and beef were irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays at 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1.0 kGy, and stored in a freezer Cells separated from the samples were embedded in agarose gel on a slide, dissolved in a lysis solution, and electrophoresed at 2 V/cm for 2.0 min by horizontal electrophoesis. The cells were then stained with a silver staining in order to visualize the DNA using a micro-scope. The DNA fragments of the irradiated cells stretched or migrated out of the cells and formed tails towards the anode, giving the appearance of comets, while unirradiated cells formed very short or no tails. The distance of DNA migration increased with irradiation dose. Since the statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between tail length and irradiation dose, a DNA comet assay could provide not only identification but also estimation of the irradiation dose for irradiated beef and pork.
