  • A three-dimensional visualization of the tsunami transoceanic propagation and associated run-up process is described. The visualization is done by using high performance graphic computer and video system. As a case study, a three-dimensional animation of the 1960 Chilean tsunami propagation across the Pacific Ocean and inundation at Hilo Bay, Hawaii is made and presented.

  • The method for spraying of liquids through an electrical field has become a printing method since it can make very small droplet. For electro-hydrodynamic jet printing to become a reliable jetting tool, the jetting performance should be characterized with respect to various jetting conditions. To optimize jetting conditions, the jetting behavior should be measured. In this study, we present a visualization techniques to measure jetting behavior from electro-hydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet head. Unlike most previous method, we use the CCD camera to measure the jetting behavior. For this purpose, LED light is synchronized with jetting signal and sequential image was obtained by adjusting the delay time of the LED light. Finally, merits and demerits of using CCD camera were discussed to measure jetting image from EHD inkjet head.

  • Water management in polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) has been receiving large attention as an important issue in practical applications. Proper water management is vital to achieve high performance and durability of PEFC. In this study, an X-ray imaging technique was employed to visualize the water distribution in a PEFC quantitatively. X-ray images of the PEFC components with and without water were distinguished clearly. From the visualized X-ray images, we could evaluate the water distribution in the region between separator and gas diffusion layer (GDL) quantitatively. In addition, the contact angle of water in the micro-channels was also clearly visualized.

  • KAERI has developed a KALIMER-600 which is a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor with a 600MWe electric generation capacity. For a SFR development, one of the main topics is an enhancement of the reactor system safety. Therefore, we have a long-term plan to design the large sodium experimental facility to evaluate the reactor safety and component performance. In order to extrapolate a thermal hydraulic phenomena in a large sodium reactor, the thermal hydraulics phenomena is under investigation in a 1/$10^{th}$ water-simulant facility for the KALIMER-600. In this paper, we shortly described the experimental facility setup and the measurement of the isothermal global flow behavior. For the flow field measurement, the PIV method was used in a transparent Plexiglas reactor vessel model at around $20^{\circ}C$ water condition.

  • This paper deals with the measurement and analysis on the scavenging performance of the oppet-valve type two-stroke engine with different shroud system. The scavenging flow characteristics is investigated by flow visualization under steady condition, in which a dye is introduced into single-cycle method using the difference of specific gravity between two working fluids is used to evaluate the scavenging efficiency and the trapping efficiency. The 90° shroud system was found to be the highest efficiency system through both flow visualization and single-cycle test, as well as the shroud system to generally be efficient for reducing a short-circuiting flow during scavenging process in a two-stoke engine.

  • Urea-SCR system has been known so far as one of effective after treatments for the reduction of NOx. In order to achieve better performance in SCR system, optimal geometric conditions for a urea injection system should be achieved. This research focused to visualize spray characteristics of urea injected SCR system in a heavy duty diesel engine. The experiment was conducted by varying injection pressures and flow rates of urea. The flow visualization was made by photographing techniques of CCD camera.

  • With the rapid change of the Web and E-transaction application, the search interface is providing more powerful search and visualization methods, while offering smoother integration of technology with task. Especially, visualization techniques for long menu-lists are applied in retrieval system with the goal of improving performance in user's ability to select one item from a long list. In order to review visualization techniques appropriate to the types of users and data set, this study compared the five visualization browsers such as the Tree-structured menu, the Table-of-contents menu, the Roll-over menu, the Click menu, and Fisheye menu. The result of general analyses shows that among the hierarchical methods, the experienced group prefers the Table-of-contents method menu, whereas the novice's group prefers the Tree-structure method menu. Among the linear methods, the two groups prefer the Roll-over menu. The Roll-over menu is most preferred among the five browsers by the two groups.

  • A gas turbine is the main equipment of a power plant that generates electricity by high-speed rotation of the rotor in a high-temperature environment. In particular, in the case of medium to large-sized gas turbines, the rotor is composed of a plurality of stages, and each component is exposed to different physical environments. Especially, in the case of the tip clearance of the turbine, it is a very important factor in the performance of the design items and the operation of the stable turbine, and a design considering the physical behavior of all major parts should be done. In this study, we will discuss the process of visualizing the physical behavior of turbine operating conditions and the method of designing tip clearance for stable operation by using commercial finite element analysis program for gas turbine assembly model and single product.

  • A two-phase flow observed in a heat exchanger or nuclear power generation often has a profound effect on undesirable noise or flow characteristics. Void fraction, which refers to the ratio of gas (or liquid) to the total fluid, affects heat transfer coefficient, vibration and so forth. In other words, void fraction is one of most important parameters in two-phase flow since it contributes to comprehend the characteristics of two-phase flow. We developed a two-phase flow visualization system to measure cross-sectional and volumetric void fractions by using quick closing valves and image processing software. With this system, we could observe the plug, slug, and stratified flow patterns of two-phase flow and measure a myriad of void fractions. As a consequence of the experiment, we found that the estimated void fractions were largely coincident with the predictive values by Chisholm model.

A Study of Classical Makeup of the Korean Age by Using Language Visualization (언어 시각화를 통한 한국의 시대별 고전화장 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the visual elements for effectively conveying the make-up method of the Korean history. We will do basic research on language visualization through visual poetry by using a make-up method as a visual expression element. Our research methods consisted of a related literature research, an internet search, and case study methods. The make-up methods of Korean classical make-up through visual poetry consisted of a through literature review. First, make-up methods, cosmetics, jewelry, and hair styles are shown in the classic make-up style of each age. Second, classical make-up visual poetry shows the identity, gender, and character depictions. Third, there were many visual metaphors about the hair types, figures, and hair among the classical make-up methods of each age. I think that this topic is worth researching as an appropriate medium to increase attractiveness. This research is with visual expression elements of the Korea make-up method. This study analyzed the Korean traditional make-up method that expresses and reinterprets visual metaphors. The results of this study can be applied for basic research.
