  • An accurate and reliable performance evaluation technique is indispensable for the development of marine antifouling coatings. The existing standard practice is however, based on the visual observation of biofouling settlement area, which is prone to the subjective judgment of the inspector. In spite of the above mentioned importance, a systematic and objective fouling evaluation technique has not yet been introduced. In this study, a novel quantitative antifouling performance evaluation method for marine antifouling paints is devised based on the image analysis of panel immersion test results. The present image analysis method is to quantify settlement area for each fouling category by distinctive color. The fouling categories are set as unfouled, biofilm, green algae, brown algae, calcareous animal and spongy animal with specific HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) color ranges. In order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, static immersion tests for three antifouling coatings were undertaken for two years.

  • As the large amount of data can be efficiently stored, the methods extracting meaningful features from big data has become important. Especially, the techniques of converting high- to low-dimensional data are crucial for the 'Data visualization'. In this study, principal component analysis (PCA; linear dimensionality reduction technique) and Isomap (non-linear dimensionality reduction technique) are introduced and applied to neural big data obtained by the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). First, we investigate how much the physical properties of stimuli are maintained after the dimensionality reduction processes. We moreover compared the amount of residual variance to quantitatively compare the amount of information that was not explained. As result, the dimensionality reduction using Isomap contains more information than the principal component analysis. Our results demonstrate that it is necessary to consider not only linear but also nonlinear characteristics in the big data analysis.

  • Methylation of cytosine is a post-synthesis modification that does not affect the primary DNA sequence but greatly influences gene expression level and phenotypes of an organism. As high-throughput sequencing of bisulfite-treated DNA is the most efficient method to identify methylated sites, several tools to map sequencing reads on a reference are available. But tools to visualize and to interpret the methylation level of methylation sites are currently insufficient. Herein, we present a novel tool to visualize the methylation level of CpG sites.

  • The near wake behind a sinusoidal cylinder has been investigated quantitatively using hot-wire anemometer and qualitative. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured in streamwise and spanwise direction. The results show that the wake in the saddle plane has a longer vortex formation region and rapid reversed flow than that in nodal plane. The elongated vortex formation region of sinusoidal cylinder is related with drag reduction. In addition, the flow visualized with particle tracing method support the flow characteristics of sinusoidal cylinder measured by hot-wire.

  • Self organizing map(SOM) is one of the unsupervised methods based on the competitive learning. Many clustering works have been performed using SOM. It has offered the data visualization according to its result. The visualized result has been used for decision process of descriptive data mining as exploratory data analysis. In this paper we propose improvement of SOM using stratified sampling of statistics. The stratification leads to improve the performance of SOM. To verify improvement of our study, we make comparative experiments using the data sets form UCI machine learning repository and simulation data.

  • The international concern on the inhalable fine dust is continuing to increase. In addition to the toxic properties of the fine dust itself, it can be more dangerous than other environmental factors since the dust pollution is hard to be detected by human sense. Although the information on outdoor air condition can be acquired easily, the indoor dust concentration is another problem because the indoor air condition is influenced by the architectural environment and human activity. It means occupants may be exposed to indoor dust pollution over a long period without being aware. Therefore the indoor dust concentration should be measured separately and visualized as an intuitive information. By visualizing, the indoor dust concentration in each space can be recognized practically in compare with the degree of pollution in adjacent spaces. Besides the visualization outcome can be used as base data for related research such as an analysis of the relation between indoor dust concentration and architectural environment. Meanwhile, with the development of network and micro sensing devices, it became possible to collect wide range of indoor environment data. In this regards, this paper suggests a system for visualization of indoor dust concentration and demonstrates it on an actual space.

  • The paradigm in biology is currently changing from that of conducting hypothesis-driven individual experiments to that of utilizing the results of a massive data analysis with appropriate computational tools. We present LayMap, an implemented visualization system that helps the user to deal with a high volume of the biomedical literature such as MEDLINE, through the layered maps that are constructed on the results of an information extraction system. LayMap also utilizes filtering and granularity for an enhanced view of the results. Since a biomedical information extraction system gives rise to a focused and effective way of slicing up the data space, the combined use of LayMap with such an information extraction system can help the user to navigate the data space in a speedy and guided manner. As a case study, we have applied the system to datasets of journal abstracts on 'MAPK pathway' and 'bufalin' from MEDLINE. With the proposed visualization, we have successfully rediscovered pathway maps of a reasonable quality for ERK, p38 and JNK. Furthermore, with respect to bufalin, we were able to identify the potentially interesting relation between the Chinese medicine Chan su and apoptosis with a high level of detail.

  • This paper describes the measurement of performance evaluation of rotational flow varying chamber size and Reynolds number. Through the experimental visualization of the flow rotation, the number and position of flow rotation in the $2{\times}2$ microfluidic centrifuge were examined. At a chamber width of 250${\mu}m$, single flow rotation was obtained over at a Reynolds number of 300, while at a chamber width of 500 ${\mu}m$, single flow rotation did not appear. For performance evaluation, the intensity in microchamber was measured during 20 sec. At a chamber width of 250 ${\mu}m$, performance of rotational flow increased as Reynolds number increased. However, the variation of intensity in microchamber remained unchanged at a chamber width of 500 ${\mu}m$. The numerical analysis showed that the threshold centrifugal acceleration to obtain rotational flow for ejected particles was 200g.

  • Cultivating creativity is one of the goals in science education. Previous studies report that students use visualization while they solve the creative science problem and it looks helpful to make them think more. For this study three $6^{th}$ grade students were selected in the consideration of pre-test through the qualitative think-aloud method. The results show that even though students have many ideas in planning stage in problem solving, they appeared to visualize familiar and empirical ideas at first. So if teachers want to watch another creative ideas, they tended to give enough time to visualize many ideas. Students drew lines, circles, "X"marks to select or remove information during their problem solving works. They said these marks seem to be useful to understand question. However, removal marks sometimes turn out to block another chance to re-think. Also students did not have a chance to reflect what they did. It means that they lose the chance to do convergent thinking. The implications of this study include the importance of students' visualization works to facilitate their creative ideas and support their problem solving strategies. In this study, we discuss the meaningful messages for teachers who construct science classroom for creativity.
