  • Flow visualization is one of visualization techniques and it means a visual expression of vector data using 2D or 3D graphics. It aims for human to easily understand a special feature of the vector data. Flow visualization can be classified into various criterions such as visualization technique, data dimension, type of the flow, and so on. Visualization technique can be categorized into direct method, integration method and derived data based method. Data dimension can be divided into 2D, 2.5D and 3D. Type of flow data may be classified into steady and unsteady. In this paper, various LIC based flow visualization methods will be introduced which is one of representative integration based techniques. Those methods will be categorized with more detailed criterions such as dimension and type of flows.

  • Flow visualization is one of visualization techniques and it means a visual expression of vector data using 2D or 3D graphics. It aims for human to easily find and understand a special feature of the vector data. The Image Based Flow Visualization (IBFV) is one of the fastest technique in the dense integration based flow visualization techniques. In this paper, IBFV is accelerated and implemented using commodity GPU. Especially, mesh advection is accelerated at the vertex program.

  • A flow visualization near submerged nozzle of solid rocket motor was conducted by experiments. A numerical simulation was also performed to reveal detailed phenomena. Radial cold flow simulating hot gas was introduced by a porous grain model which was manufactured by perforated steel plates. The grain model was mounted in high-pressure chamber which has quartz glass at the top of the grain model. From the high-speed images, a rotating vortex was observed and the two type of counter-rotating momentums were generated in numerical results. The rotating momentum was generated at the fin-slot grain because of unbalance between high-velocity flow from slots and low-velocity flow from fin-bases. As a result, roll torques can be produced by the rotating vortex tube.

  • Meteorological data contains observation and numerical weather prediction model output data. The computerized analysis and visualization of meteorological data often requires very high computing capability due to the large size and complex structure of the data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed in multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series form, it is very important to visualize and analyze the data in 3D spatial domain in order to get more understanding about the meteorological phenomena. In this research, we developed interactive 3-dimensional visualization techniques for visualizing meteorological data on a PC environment such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line. The visualization techniques developed in this research are expected to be effectively used as basic technologies not only for deeper understanding and more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, and aeronautical engineering.

  • The recent 3D visualization such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line visualization gives more understanding about structures or distribution of data in a space and, moreover, the real-time rendering of a scene enables the animation of time-series data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed as multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series data, the spatial analysis, time-series analysis, vector display, and animation techniques can do important roles to get more understanding about data. In this research, our aim is to develop the 3-dimensional visualization techniques for meteorological data in the PC environment by using IDL. The visualization technology from :his research will be used as basic technology not only for the deeper understanding and the more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for the scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three-dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, or aeronautical engineering.

  • Developments in the emerging field of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD), which is made possible by the supercomputer technologies, introduce a new problem of analysing the massive amount of output produced. This problem is common to fields of computational science and engineering. Scientific visualization is to solve this problem by applying advanced technologies of computer graphics. Methods of scientific visualization are studded to visualize calculated flow fields. Different methods of scientific visualization has been surveyed, analysed and compared to select one method, iso-surface. Methods of constructing iso-surfaces from a 3-D data set have been studied. A new algorithm for constructing iso-surfaces has been developed. The algorithm can be classified as one of surface tiling methods. To develope a portable visualization system the international standard PHIGS PLUS and its implementation on X-Window system, PEX, have been selected as the development environment. A prototype of visualization system has been developed. The developed visualization system has been tried to visualize several well-known flow fields.
