For structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructures, displacement is a good descriptor of the structural behavior under all the potential disturbances. However, it is not easy to measure displacement of civil infrastructures, since the conventional sensors need a reference point, and inaccessibility to the reference point is sometimes caused by the geographic conditions, such as a highway or river under a bridge, which makes installation of measuring devices time-consuming and costly, if not impossible. To resolve this issue, a visionbased real-time displacement measurement system using digital image processing techniques is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed system was verified by comparing the load carrying capacities of a steel-plate girder bridge obtained from the conventional sensor and the present system. Further, to simultaneously measure multiple points, a synchronized vision-based system is developed using master/slave system with wireless data communication. For the purpose of verification, the measured displacement by a synchronized vision-based system was compared with the data measured by conventional contact-type sensors, linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) from a laboratory test.

Occlusion is one of the most challenging problems for computer vision-based construction monitoring. Due to the intrinsic dynamics of construction scenes, vision-based technologies inevitably suffer from occlusions. Previous researchers have proposed the occlusion handling methods by leveraging the prior information from the sequential images. However, these methods cannot be employed for construction object detection in non-sequential images. As an alternative occlusion handling method, this study proposes a data augmentation-based framework that can enhance the detection performance under occlusions. The proposed approach is specially designed for rebar occlusions, the distinctive type of occlusions frequently happen during construction worker detection. In the proposed method, the artificial rebars are synthetically generated to emulate possible rebar occlusions in construction sites. In this regard, the proposed method enables the model to train a variety of occluded images, thereby improving the detection performance without requiring sequential information. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by showing that the proposed method outperforms the baseline model without augmentation. The outcomes demonstrate the great potential of the data augmentation techniques for occlusion handling that can be readily applied to typical object detectors without changing their model architecture.
The contribution of this paper is to provide the methods for the production automation of potato microtuber using the vision process in growth monitoring. The first method deals with computation for the growth density in the primary growth process. The second method addresses cognition process to identify the number and the volume of potato microtuber in secondary growth process. The third is to decide whether potato microtubers are infected by a virus or bacteria in growth process. The computation for the growth density in the primary growth process uses the method of Labeling. The second and third methods use template matching based on color patterns. With the developed method using vision process, this experiment is capable of discriminating weekly growth-rate in primary growth process, 85% cognition rate in secondary process and identifying whether there are infections. Therefore, we conclude that our experimental results are capable of growth monitoring for mass production of potato microtubers.

Nowadays, the existing manual method for recording actual progress of the construction site has some drawbacks, such as great reliance on the experience of professional engineers, work-intensive, time consuming and error prone. A method integrating computer vision and BIM(Building Information Modeling) is presented for indoor automatic progress monitoring. The developed method can accurately calculate the engineering quantity of target component in the time-lapse images. Firstly, sample images of on-site target are collected for training the classifier. After the construction images are identified by edge detection and classifier, a voting algorithm based on mathematical geometry and vector operation will divide the target contour. Then, according to the camera calibration principle, the image pixel coordinates are conversed into the real world Coordinate and the real coordinates would be corrected with the help of the geometric information in BIM model. Finally, the actual engineering quantity is calculated.

This paper proposes vision sensors and deep learning-based around view monitoring system for ship berthing. Ship berthing to the port requires precise relative position and relative speed information between the mooring facility and the ship. For ships of Handysize or higher, the vesselships must be docked with the help of pilots and tugboats. In the case of ships handling dangerous cargo, tug boats push the ship and dock it in the port, using the distance and velocity information receiving from the berthing aid system (BAS). However, the existing BAS is very expensive and there is a limit on the size of the vessel that can be measured. Also, there is a limitation that it is difficult to measure distance and speed when there are obstacles near the port. This paper proposes a relative distance and speed estimation system that can be used as a ship berthing assist system. The proposed system is verified by comparing the performance with the existing laser-based distance and speed measurement system through the field tests at the actual port.

A single vision system limits the ability to accurately understand the spatial constraints and interactions between robots and dynamic workers caused by gantry robots and collaborative robots during production manufacturing. In this paper, we propose a 3D pose registration method for dynamic workers based on a multi-domain vision system for safety monitoring in manufacturing environments. This method uses OpenPose, a deep learning-based posture estimation model, to estimate the worker's dynamic two-dimensional posture in real-time and reconstruct it into three-dimensional coordinates. The 3D coordinates of the reconstructed multi-domain vision system were aligned using the ICP algorithm and then registered to a single 3D coordinate system. The proposed method showed effective performance in a manufacturing process environment with an average registration error of 0.0664 m and an average frame rate of 14.597 per second.

In recent years, the growing interest in off-site construction has led to factories scaling up their manufacturing and production processes in the construction sector. Consequently, continuous large-scale site monitoring in low-variability environments, such as prefabricated components production plants (precast concrete production), has gained increasing importance. Although many studies on computer vision-based site monitoring have been conducted, challenges for deploying this technology for large-scale field applications still remain. One of the issues is collecting and transmitting vast amounts of video data. Continuous site monitoring systems are based on real-time video data collection and analysis, which requires excessive computational resources and network traffic. In addition, it is difficult to integrate various object information with different sizes and scales into a single scene. Various sizes and types of objects (e.g., workers, heavy equipment, and materials) exist in a plant production environment, and these objects should be detected simultaneously for effective site monitoring. However, with the existing object detection algorithms, it is difficult to simultaneously detect objects with significant differences in size because collecting and training massive amounts of object image data with various scales is necessary. This study thus developed a large-scale site monitoring system using edge computing and a small-object detection system to solve these problems. Edge computing is a distributed information technology architecture wherein the image or video data is processed near the originating source, not on a centralized server or cloud. By inferring information from the AI computing module equipped with CCTVs and communicating only the processed information with the server, it is possible to reduce excessive network traffic. Small-object detection is an innovative method to detect different-sized objects by cropping the raw image and setting the appropriate number of rows and columns for image splitting based on the target object size. This enables the detection of small objects from cropped and magnified images. The detected small objects can then be expressed in the original image. In the inference process, this study used the YOLO-v5 algorithm, known for its fast processing speed and widely used for real-time object detection. This method could effectively detect large and even small objects that were difficult to detect with the existing object detection algorithms. When the large-scale site monitoring system was tested, it performed well in detecting small objects, such as workers in a large-scale view of construction sites, which were inaccurately detected by the existing algorithms. Our next goal is to incorporate various safety monitoring and risk analysis algorithms into this system, such as collision risk estimation, based on the time-to-collision concept, enabling the optimization of safety routes by accumulating workers' paths and inferring the risky areas based on workers' trajectory patterns. Through such developments, this continuous large-scale site monitoring system can guide a construction plant's safety management system more effectively.
In recent years, there has been increasing use of automatic surveillance and monitoring systems based on vision sensors. Humans are often the most important target in the systems, but processing human images is difficult due to the small sizes and flexible motions. Particularly, occlusion among pedestrians in camera images brings practical problems. In this paper, we propose a novel method to separate image regions of occluded pedestrians. A camera equipped with a wide angle lens is attached to the ceiling of a building corridor for sensing pedestrians with a wide field of view. The output images of the camera are processed for the human detection, tracking, identification, distortion correction, and occlusion handling. We resolve the occlusion problem adaptively depending on the angles and positions of their heads. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is more efficient and accurate compared with existing methods.

The measurement of contact wire uplift in electric railway is one of the most test method to accept the maximum permitted speed of new vehicles or pantographs. The contact wire uplift can be measured for shot periods when pantograph is running in monitoring station. This paper describes the development of two different methods for contact uplift measurement using vision-based system and wireless online monitoring system. Our vision-based system employs a high-speed CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) camera with gigabit ethernet LAN. The development of a real-time remote monitoring system that acquires data from any kind of sensor to be transmitted by wireless communication from overhead line and structure at 25 kV to a computer in catenary system. The proposed two kind of different measurement systems to evaluation for dynamic uplift of overhead contact wire shows promising on-field applications for high speed train such as Korea Tilting Train (TTX) and Korea Train eXpress (KTX).
Pig farming, a vital industry, necessitates proactive measures for early disease detection and crush symptom monitoring to ensure optimum pig health and safety. This review explores advanced thermal sensing technologies and computer vision-based thermal imaging techniques employed for pig disease and piglet crush symptom monitoring on pig farms. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive and efficient technology for measuring pig body temperature, providing advantages such as non-destructive, long-distance, and high-sensitivity measurements. Unlike traditional methods, IRT offers a quick and labor-saving approach to acquiring physiological data impacted by environmental temperature, crucial for understanding pig body physiology and metabolism. IRT aids in early disease detection, respiratory health monitoring, and evaluating vaccination effectiveness. Challenges include body surface emissivity variations affecting measurement accuracy. Thermal imaging and deep learning algorithms are used for pig behavior recognition, with the dorsal plane effective for stress detection. Remote health monitoring through thermal imaging, deep learning, and wearable devices facilitates non-invasive assessment of pig health, minimizing medication use. Integration of advanced sensors, thermal imaging, and deep learning shows potential for disease detection and improvement in pig farming, but challenges and ethical considerations must be addressed for successful implementation. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art technologies used in the pig farming industry, including computer vision algorithms such as object detection, image segmentation, and deep learning techniques. It also discusses the benefits and limitations of IRT technology, providing an overview of the current research field. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and farmers regarding IRT application in pig production, highlighting notable approaches and the latest research findings in this field.
