  • A simple computer vision technology to measure the middle-ranged depth with mono camera and plain mirror is proposed The proposed system is structured wiか the rotating mirror in front of the fixed mono camera In contrast to the previous stereo vision system in which the disparity of the closer object is larger than that of the distant object, the pixel movement caused by the rotating mirror is bigger for the pixels of the distant object in the proposed system Being inspired by such feature in the proposed system the principle of the depth measurement based on the relation of the pixel movement and the distance of object have been investigated. Also, the factors to influence the precision of the measurement are analysed The benefits of the proposed system are low price and less chance of occlusion. The robustness for practical usage is an additional benefit of the proposed vision system.

  • A vision-based surface-strain measurement system has been still improved since the authors devel-oped the first version of it. New algorithms for the subpixel measurement and surface smoothing are introduced to improve the accuracy and precision in the present study. The effects of these algorithms are investigated by error analysis. And the equations required to calculate 3D surface-strain of a shell element are derived from the shape function of a linear solid finite-element. The influences of external factors on the measurement error are also examined, and several trials are made to obtain possible optimal condition which may minimize the error.

  • This paper introduced a measurement method for image sticking based on human vision perception. Existing image sticking quantification method is mostly different from visible level by human perception. It takes a long time to measure image sticking which is degraded by time due to using a spot photometer, therefore many test samples could not be evaluated in a given short period of time in mass production line. However, the new measurement method in this paper is possible to evaluate a large quantity of samples in fast and high correlation with human perceptual level of image sticking.

  • Dynamic displacement of structures is an important index for in-service structural condition and behavior assessment, but accurate measurement of structural displacement for large-scale civil structures such as long-span bridges still remains as a challenging task. In this paper, a vision-based dynamic displacement measurement system with the use of digital image processing technology is developed, which is featured by its distinctive characteristics in non-contact, long-distance, and high-precision structural displacement measurement. The hardware of this system is mainly composed of a high-resolution industrial CCD (charge-coupled-device) digital camera and an extended-range zoom lens. Through continuously tracing and identifying a target on the structure, the structural displacement is derived through cross-correlation analysis between the predefined pattern and the captured digital images with the aid of a pattern matching algorithm. To validate the developed system, MTS tests of sinusoidal motions under different vibration frequencies and amplitudes and shaking table tests with different excitations (the El-Centro earthquake wave and a sinusoidal motion) are carried out. Additionally, in-situ verification experiments are performed to measure the mid-span vertical displacement of the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge in the operational condition and the cable-stayed Stonecutters Bridge during loading tests. The obtained results show that the developed system exhibits an excellent capability in real-time measurement of structural displacement and can serve as a good complement to the traditional sensors.

  • Efficient management of deteriorating civil infrastructure is one of the most important research topics in many developed countries. In particular, the remote displacement measurement of bridges using linear variable differential transformers, global positioning systems, laser Doppler vibrometers, and computer vision technologies has been attempted extensively. This paper proposes a remote displacement measurement system using closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) and a computer-vision-based method for in-situ bridge bearings having relatively large displacement due to temperature change in long term. The hardware of the system is composed of a reference target for displacement measurement, a CCTV to capture target images, a gateway to transmit images via a mobile network, and a central server to store and process transmitted images. The usage of CCTV capable of night vision capture and wireless data communication enable long-term 24-hour monitoring on wide range of bridge area. The computer vision algorithm to estimate displacement from the images involves image preprocessing for enhancing the circular features of the target, circular Hough transformation for detecting circles on the target in the whole field-of-view (FOV), and homography transformation for converting the movement of the target in the images into an actual expansion displacement. The simple target design and robust circle detection algorithm help to measure displacement using target images where the targets are far apart from each other. The proposed system is installed at the Tancheon Overpass located in Seoul, and field experiments are performed to evaluate the accuracy of circle detection and displacement measurements. The circle detection accuracy is evaluated using 28,542 images captured from 71 CCTVs installed at the testbed, and only 48 images (0.168%) fail to detect the circles on the target because of subpar imaging conditions. The accuracy of displacement measurement is evaluated using images captured for 17 days from three CCTVs; the average and root-mean-square errors are 0.10 and 0.131 mm, respectively, compared with a similar displacement measurement. The long-term operation of the system, as evaluated using 8-month data, shows high accuracy and stability of the proposed system.

  • In this study, a vision-based displacement measurement system is developed to accurately measure the displacement of a structure with locating the camera at arbitrary position. The previous vision-based system brings error when the optical axis of a camera has an angle with the measured structure, which limits the applicability at large structures. The developed system measures displacement by processing the images of a target plate that is attached on the measured position of a structure. To measure displacement regardless of the angle between the optical axis of the camera and the target plate, planar homography is employed to match two planes in image and world coordinate systems. To validate the performance of the present system, a laboratory test is carried out using a small 2-story shear building model. The result shows that the present system measures accurate displacement of the structure even with a camera significantly angled with the target plate.

  • In this study, the authors introduce a newly developed flatfish grading system. Owing to the features of flatfish with and wide body, the general types of grading system are not easy to apply for it. Furthermore, the flatfish to be graded is alive such that the existing measurement and grading systems cannot be used for it as well. This study gives a solution for measuring and grading the flatfish with high speed and good accuracy. For this object, the authors developed flatfish measurement and grading system. This system consist of the feeding, conveying, measurement part and sorting part. Especially, the measurement part is made by vision based measuring technique which satisfies the given specification. The result from the experiment shows that the developed system is applicable for measuring and grading the flatfish sizes in variety.

  • In this study, a novel method referred as non-marker vision-based displacement measuring system(NVDMS) was introduced in order to measure the displacement of structure. There are two distinct differences between proposed NVDMS and existing vision-based displacement measuring system(VDMS). First, the NVDMS extracts the pixel coordinates of the structure using a feature point not a marker. Second, in the NVDMS, the scaling factor in order to convert the coordinates of a feature points from pixel value to physical value can be calculated by using the external conditions between the camera and the structure, which are distance, angle, and focal length, while the scaling factor for VDMS can be calculated by using the geometry of marker. The free vibration test using the three-stories scale model was conducted in order to analyze the reliability of the displacement data obtained from the NVDMS by comparing the reference data obtained from laser displacement sensor(LDS), and the measurement of dynamic characteristics was proceed using the displacement data. The NVDMS can accurately measure the dynamic displacement of the structure without the marker, and the high reliability of the dynamic characteristics obtained from the NVDMS are secured.

  • Micro jetting drop inspection system is essential to measuring micro drop volume. Measuring pico-liter drop volume is useful for new LCD color filter product process that is based on inkjet printing technology. To upgrade the reliability in drop measurement system, we use the auto focusing & multi drop reiteration & blurring average algorism. First of all we used standard mark for gage R&R in the vision system. Finding the most suitable threshold for multi blurring drop, is the main key of this research. Sensitivity of vision system is a standard in measuring the upgrade system level. So, suitable threshold can upgrade the performance of jetting drop inspection system.

  • A novel method of dimensional measurement using machine vision, which is called Landmark Tracking System, has been developed. Its advantages come form tracking only the bright, standard shaped "landmarks" which are made from retroreflective sheets. In the design of the LTS, it is essential to know the relationship between optical parameters and their influence on system performance. Such optical parameters include the brightness of landmark image, the illumination system design, and the choice of imaging optics. And the performance of retroreflective material also plays important role in the LTS performances. Influences of such optical parameters on LTS's dimensional measurement characteristics are investigated, with respect to the retroreflective material, the imaging optics, and the illumination system. Measuremtn errors due to parameter variations are also analyzed. Experiments are performed with a LTS prototype. Retroreflective characteristics are verified, and the LTS's measurement performances are measured in the form of repeatability and accuracy. Experimental results shgow that the LTS has repeatability better than 1/30,000 of a field of view(30 degrees), and accuracy better tha 1/3,000 of a field fo view.d fo view.
