This study investigates the lubrication characteristics of fuel injection pumps with reference to different fuel oils. Medium-speed diesel engines use fuel oils with various viscosities, such as heavy fuel oil (HFO, which is a high-viscosity fuel oil) and light diesel oil (LDO, which is a low-viscosity fuel oil). When fuel oil with a low viscosity is used, both fuel oil and lubricating oil lubricate the system. Thus, the lubrication of the fuel injection pump is in a multi-viscosity condition when the fuel oil in use changes. We suggest three cases of multi-viscosity models, and divide the fuel injection pump into three lubrication sections: a, the new oil section; b, the mixed oil section; and c, the used oil section. This study compares the lubrication characteristics with variation of the multi-viscosity model, clearance. The volume of Section b does not affect the lubrication characteristics. The lubrication characteristics of the fuel injection pump are poor when high-viscosity fuel oil transfers to low-viscosity fuel oil. This occurs because the viscosity in the new oil section (i.e., Section a) dominates the lubrication characteristics of the fuel injection pump. However, the lubricant oil supply in the used oil section (i.e., Section c) can improve the lubrication characteristics in this condition. Moreover, the clearances of the stem and head significantly influence the lubrication characteristics when the fuel oil changes.
A study was carried out to establish a detection method for irradiated black pepper using amylograph characteristics. The maximum viscosity, viscosity at $93^{\circ}C$, viscosity after 15 min at $93^{\circ}C$, viscosity at $45^{\circ}C$, viscosity after 30 min at $45^{\circ}C$, and viscosity after 60 min at $45^{\circ}C$ decreased with increasing irradiation doses, but initial pasting temperatures, maximum viscosity temperatures, breakdown, setback, and consistency did not show great changes. The high correlation coefficients $(R^2>0.97)$ were shown between irradiation doses and amylograph characteristics except for breakdown $(R^2>0.75)$, setback $(R^2>0.88)$ and consistency $(R^2>0.31)$. These results suggest that detection of irradiated black pepper is possible using amylograph characteristics.
Hemorheology plays an important role in atherosclerosis. Hemorheologic properties of blood include whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, hemaocrit, RBC deformability and aggregation, and fibrinogen concentration in plasma. Blood flow is determine by three parameters (pressure, lumen diameter, and whole blood viscosity), whole blood viscosity is one of the key physiological variables. However, the significance of whole blood viscosity has not yet not been fully appreciated. Whole blood viscosity has a unique property, non-Newtonian shear-thinning characteristics, which is primarily due to the presence of RBCs. Hence, RBC deformability and aggregation directly affect the magnitude of blood viscosity, and any factors or diseases affecting RBC characteristics influence blood viscosity. Therefore, on can see that whole blood viscosity is the causal mechanism by which traditional risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, exercise, obesity, age, and gender are related to atherogenesis. In this regard, we included whole blood viscosity in the three key determinants of injurious pulsatile flow that results in mechanical injury and protective adaptation in the arterial system. Because whole blood viscosity is a potential predictor of cardiovascular diseases, it should be measured in routine cardiovascular profiles. Incorporating whole blood viscosity measurements into a standard clinical protocol could improve our ability to identify patients at risk for cardiovascular disease and its complications.
This experiment was undertaken to investigate the atomization characteristics of the low viscosity biodiesel blended fuel and ultrasonic energy added one. Test fuels were conventional diesel fuel and biodiesel fuel. We compared to the characteristics of viscosity and surface tension, SMD between low viscosity biodiesel blended fuel and ultrasonic energy added one. Sauter mean diameter was measured under the variation of the spray distance. Viscosity and surface tension was measured under the variation of the time trace. To measure the droplet size, we used the Malvern system 2600C. Droplet size distribution was analyzed from the result data of Malvern system. Through this experiment, we found that the condition of the ultrasonic energy added situation had smaller Sauter mean diameter of droplet, viscosity and surface tension than that of the conventional situation.

Recently, the rheology on the fluidity of materials has been progressed remarkably. Viscosity measurement for precision-accuracy has needed very important to measure the rheological properties of materials in the field of chemistry-fiber, paint, printing-ink, plastics, rubber, foodstuff-industry, etc. And many methods of measurement have been developed lately. So in this experimental study, small capacity torque transducer with type of strain gage, different method against other existing viscometers, measured viscosity about a liquid that has flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid. Using the assumed computational equation of viscosity, it has same value of viscosity in each different radius of rotating cylinder. In the result, this equipment will be used in the viscosity measurement of a liquid taking flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid.
Purpose: While rapeseed oil, soy bean oil, palm oil and waste cooking oil are being used for biodiesel, the viscosity of them should be lowered for fuel. The most widely used method of decreasing the viscosity of vegetable oil is to convert the vegetable oil into fatty acid methyl ester but is too expensive. This experiment uses ultrasonic energy, instead of converting the vegetable oil into fatty acid methyl ester, to lower the viscosity of the waste cooking oil. Methods: For irradiation treatment, the sample in a beaker was irradiated with ultrasonic energy and the viscosity and temperature were measured with a viscometer. For heating treatment, the sample in a beaker was heated and the viscosity and temperature were measured with a viscometer. Kinematic viscosity was calculated by dividing absolute viscosity with density. Results: The kinematic viscosity of waste cooking oil and cooking oil are up to ten times as high as that of light oil at room temperature. However, the difference of two types of oil decreased by four times as the temperature increased over $83^{\circ}C$. When the viscosity by the treatment of ultrasonic energy irradiation was compared to one by the heating treatment to the waste cooking oil, the viscosity by the treatment of ultrasonic energy irradiation was lower by maximum of 22% and minimum of 12%, than one by the heating treatment. Conclusions: Ultrasonic energy irradiation lowered the viscosity more than the heating treatment did, and ultrasonic energy irradiation has an enormous effect on fuel reforming.
Many tribological components in automobile engine undergo high load and sliding speed with thin film thickness. The lubrication characteristics of the components are regarded as ether hydrodynamic lubrication or boundary lubrication, whereas in a working cycle they actually have both characteristics. Many modem engine lubricants have various additives for better performance which make boundary film formation even under hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Conventional Reynolds equation with the viewpoints of continuum mechanics concerns only bulk viscosity of lubricant, which means that its simulation does not give insights on boundary lubrication characteristics. However, many additives of modern engine lubricant provide mixed modes of boundary lubrication characteristics and hydrodynamic lubrication. Especially, high molecular weight polymeric viscosity index improvers form boundary film on the solid surface and cause non-Newtonian fluid effect of shear thinning. This study has performed the investigation about journal bearing system with the mixed concepts of boundary lubrication and hydrodynamic lubrication which happen concurrently in many engine components under the condition of viscosity index improver added.
In the pressure swirl atomizer, the liquid is injected through tangential passages into a swirl chamber, from which it emerges with both tangential and axial velocity components to form a thin conical sheet at the nozzle exit. This sheet rapidly attenuates, finally disintegrating into ligaments and then drops. The purpose of this study is to measure the spray characteristics according to variation of viscosity of the spray produced by the pressure swirl atomizer. The nozzle tested here were especially designed for this investigation. The discharge coefficient is determined by measuring the volume flow rate with a flow meter and the cone angle of the liquid sheets issuing from the nozzle is obtained from series of photographs of the sheet for various liquid viscosity and injection pressure. And mean drop size is measured by image processing method. It is found that the geometrical characteristics of the nozzle and the variation of viscosity were the influential parameters to determine the spray characteristics such as the cone angle, discharge coefficients and SMD.
In this study, the thickness of the liquid sheet formed by a low speed impinging jet onto a flat plate was measured by the direct contact method. The spatial distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness in the radial and circumferential directions, and the effects of jet velocity and liquid viscosity were analyzed. The measurement results were compared with the theoretical predictions. The wavy surface was observed in the case of low viscosity water, but not in the high viscosity aqueous glycerol solutions. The sheet thickness increased as the circumferential angle increased or the distance from the impinging point increased, but the thickness decreased as the circumferential angle increased around the impinging point. As the jet speed increased, the sheet thickness decreased, and the sheet thickness increased as the liquid viscosity increased. Comparison with the theoretical predictions showed that the measurement results agreed well in the case of low viscosity water or high viscosity liquids around the impinging point. The distribution characteristics of the sheet thickness can provide useful means for prediction of spray characteristics in splash plate injectors.

Preparing for treatment and management of the emulsified fuel oil which will be generalized henceforth, this paper is an attempt to examine the viscosity-temperature characteristics of emulsified heavy fuel oil which is mixed with water and emulsifier in various mixture ratio by mechanical mixer. The experimental results are summarized as follows: 1. The viscosity-temperature characteristics of the emulsified C & B grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, is changed according to log.log(v+0.6)=b-3.8log T. 2. The emulsifier has to be added to the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water of same or less weight, because it is instable. Especially if the emulsifier is sodium stearate, it is added more than 0.3% of the weight of oil and water. 3. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with water and emulsifier, the higher the ratio of water addition becomes, the higher the viscosity is and the more the viscosity-temperature slope decreases. But the higher the ratio of emulsifier addition is, the more the viscosity-temperature slope increases. In this case, the linearity of viscosity-temperature characteristic curve is poorer than that of B and C grade heavy fuel oil. 4. In the emulsified A grade heavy fuel oil mixed with emulsifier of 0.3% or less, the emulsion type is O/W type when water addition ratio is 40%, but it is W/O type when it is 10%, 20%, 30% and 50%.
