To enhance heat transfer characteristics of water, micro-encapsulated octadecane of about $10{\mu}m$ diameter was added to water. Viscosity of the slurry was measured by using a capillary tube viscometer. The measured viscosity decreased as the temperature of the slurry increased, and it increased as the fraction of the capsules in the slurry increased. Thermal characteristics of the octadecane were studied by using a differential scanning calorimeter. The melting temperature and the melting energy of the octadecane were found to be $28.6^{\circ}$ and 34.4kcal/kg, respectively. The convective heat transfer characteristics of the slurry were investigated in a flow loop with a constant heat flux test section. Friction factor of the slurry flow was found to be similar to the expected curve by Petukhov. The Nusselt number of the slurry flow was highest when the octadecane melted. Effective thermal capacity of the 14.2% slurry was found to have 1.67 times of the thermal capacity of water.

Flow of fluid has been studied in various fields of fluid engineering. To hydraulic engineers, the unsteady flow such as pulsation and liquid hammering in pipes has been considered as a serious trouble. So we are supposed to approach the formalized mathematical model by using more exact momentum equation for fluid transmission lines. Most of recent studies fur pipe line have been studied without considerations of variation of viscosity and temperature, which are the main factors of pressure loss causing the friction of fluid inside pipe line. Frequency response experiments are carried out with use of a rotary sinusoidal flow generator to investigate wave equation take into account viscosity and temperature. But we observed that measured value of gains are reduced as temperature increased. And it was respectively observed that the measured value of gains are reduced and line width of gain is broadened out, when temperature was high in the same condition. As we confessed, pressure loss and phase delay are closely related with the length, diameter and temperature of pipe line. In addition, they are the most important factors, when we decide the momentum energy of working fluid.

The frictional pressure drop of a capillary tube flow is experimentally investigated for pure refrigerants such as R32, R125, and R134a and refrigerant mixtures such as R32/R134a(30/70 by mass percent), R32/R125(60/40), R125/R134a(30/70), and R32/R125/R134a(23/25/52). The binary interaction parameters for the calculation of viscosities of refrigerant mixtures are found based upon the data in the open literature. Several homogeneous flow models predicting the viscosity of two-phase region are compared to select the best model. Cicchitti's equation is known to be the most adequate for the prediction of the viscosity for refrigerant mixtures, which is used in the analysis of adiabatic capillary flows. A model for the prediction of the frictional pressure drop of single and two-phase flow is developed for refrigerant mixtures in this study. This model may be used to design and analyze the performance of a capillary tube in the refrigerating system.
4,4'-Methylenebis(2-chlorobenzenamine) (MOCA)-free fast curing polyurethanes were prepared. In this study, the processibility of a fast curing polyurethane system was characterized by assessing the pot life. The obtained pot life of the polyurethane was 6-8 s, indicating that this prepolymer-curative system is appropriate for ribbon flow casting. The influence of the NCO index on the viscosity and mechanical properties was evaluated. The viscosity, tensile strength, tear strength, and hardness of the as-prepared polyurethanes showed an increasing trend, with an increase in the NCO index, whereas the elongation at break increased initially and then decreased with an increase in the NCO index. The gel fraction and crosslink density showed a direct correlation with the NCO index, which substantiated the improved mechanical properties at the higher NCO index. The coefficients of friction and abrasion deteriorated with an increase in the NCO index.

In this study, effects of grain size distribution on the shear strength and rheological properties are investigated for coarse- and fine-grained soils by using direct shear apparatus. Shear strengths are estimated for fine-grained soils with the maximum particle size of 0.075 mm and coarse-grained soils with the maximum particle size of 0.425 mm and fine contents of 17% prepared at dry and liquid limit states. The direct shear tests are conducted under the relatively slow shear velocity, which corresponds to the reactivated landslide or debris flow after collapse according to the landslide classification. In addition, for the evaluation of rheological properties, residual shear strengths for both fine- and coarsegrained soils prepared under liquid limit states are obtained by multiple reversal shear tests under three shear velocities. From the relationship between residual shear strengths and shear rates, Bingham plastic viscosity and yield stress are estimated. The direct shear tests show that cohesions of fine-grained soil are greater than those of coarse-grained soil at both dry and liquid limit states. However, internal friction angles of fine-grained soil are smaller than those of coarse-grained soil. In case of rheological parameters, the plastic viscosity and yield stress of fine-grained soils are greater than those of coarse-grained soils. This study may be effectively used for the prediction of the reactivated landslide or debris flow after collapse.

Lineal and angular movements of many engine components make the lubricant absorb air and the aerated lubricant greatly influences the clearance performance of contacting behaviors of engine components such as big-end bearing, cam and tappet, etc. This study investigates the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and proceeding which is one of the most frictional energy consuming components in the engine. Our assumption for the analysis of aerated lubricant film is that the film formation is influenced by the two major factors. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change of lubricant by absorbing the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble in the lubricant. In our investigation, it is found that these two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Frictional forces are also influenced by the aerated bubble size and density, which eventually enlarge the shear resistance due the surface tension, Modified Reynolds' equation is developed for the computation of fluid film pressure with the effects of aeration ratio under the dynamic loading condition. From the calculated load capacity by solving modified Reynolds' equation, proceeding locus is computed with Mobility method at each time step.
In this paper, we have developed numerical model for particulated flow through narrow slit using Eulerian-Granular method. Commercial software (FLUENT) was utilized as simulation tool and main focus was to identify the effect from various numerical options for modeling of solid particles as continuos phase in granular flow. Gidaspow model was chosen as basic model for solid viscosity and drag model. And lun-et-al model was used as solid pressure and radial distribution model, respectively. Several other model options in FLUENT were tested considering the cross related effect. Mass flow rate of the particulate through the slit was measured to compare. Due to the high volume density of the stacked particulates above the slit, effect from various numerical options were not significant. The numerical results from basic model were also compared with experimental results and showed very good agreement. The effects from the characteristics of particles such as diameter, angle of internal friction, and collision coefficient were also analyzed for future design of velocity resistance layer in solar thermal absorber. Angle of internal friction was found to be the dominat variable for the particle mass flow rate considerably. More defined 3D model along with energy equation for complete solar thermal absorber design is currently underway.
In this study, the pressure distributions on the oil film of piston pin bearings are found by two-dimensional lubrication analysis in order to help the optimum design of the bearings of piston pin. The lubrication analysis is carried out together with an equation related with the oil pressure-viscosity index. The oil film pressure distribution is used as an input data for pressure boundary conditions at the piston pin-boss surface. Finally, the piston pin-boss stress distribution coupled with the thermal stress is calculated, and then compared with the results of the stress analysis which is not counted with the oil film pressure boundary condition.

Effects of radiation on the wall-friction and heat transfer in the convergent and divergent nozzle of a rocket motor are investigated in the present paper. Radiative heat transfer cools down the core gas, and the decrease in the gas temperature reduces the convective heat transfer on the wall. Radiation heat transfer is estimated by using mean-beam-length approach and core flow is assumed to be one-dimensional isentropic. The compressible thermal boundary layer is solved by a finite difference method. The Cebeci-Smith eddy viscosity model is adopted for the present study. Convective heat transfer is reduced at the throat of the nozzle and is almost compensated with an increase in radiative transfer. In the sequel total heat transfer rate is slightly reduced. However, radiation heat transfer is dominant in the converging part of the nozzle.

Fluid dynamic bearings (FDBs) have been replacing ball bearings of the HDD spindle motor very rapidly. But there are several demerits of HDB, such as high friction torque, variable viscosity of the fluid lubricant depending on operating temperature, low stiffness, and etc. Eccentricity is one of the major parameters which affects the static and dynamic characteristics. As the static eccentricity is larger, the stiffness and the damping coefficients become bigger. But friction torque is relatively unaffected by the static eccentricity. This research proposes a new type of journal bearing with asymmetric journal grooves which results in better dynamic characteristics. The static and dynamic characteristics of the new journal bearing are investigated by solving the Reynolds' equation with FEM, and the transient analysis is performed to predict the dynamic behavior of rotor by solving the equations of motion of a HDD spindle system with Runge-Kutta method. The result shows that the proposed Journal bearings have much bigger stiffness and damping coefficients compared with the conventional symmetric ones. And consequently, it has smaller whirl radius and tilting angle.
