This Paper presents a robust design of an Electrorheological(ER) damper using Taguchi method. Taguchi method is a robust design method that determines control parameters in the presence of noise effect. Electrode length, electrode gap, base oil viscosity and the weight ratio of ER particles are chosen for the control parameters and the temperature is considered to be a noise factor. The sensitivity of each factor with signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio and analysis of variance are investigated. The analysis results show that the electrode length and base oil viscosity of the ER fluid mostly affect the damping force in the absence of electric field. On the other hand, when the voltage is applied to the ER damper, the electrode length and the weight ratio of ER fluid exhibit significant effect. Based on the Taguchi method, an optimal configuration was designed and the robustness of the designed ER damper was validated by comparing the analysis and experimental results.
The use of magnetoresistive (MR) head requires much tighter control of particle contamination in a drive since loose particles on the disk surface will generate thermal asperities (TA). In this study, a spinoff test was performed to investigate the adhesion and removal capability of a particle to disk surface. Numerical simulation was also performed to investigate dominant factor of particle detachment and to support experimental results. It was shown that particles are detached from the disk surface by the moment derived from the centrifugal force and the drag force and that the centrifugal force and capillary force are the dominant force, which determines spin-off of a particle on the disk surface. Removal of particles smaller than several micrometers, which are the main source of TA generation, is extremely difficult since the adhesion forces exceed the centrifugal force. Lubricant types and manufacturing process also influence the particle removal. Lower bonding ratio and lower viscosity of the lubricant will help to increase the removal rate of the particles from the disk surface.

This paper presents an experimental study on the energy dissipation characteristics of viscous damping wall (VDW). VDW is consisted of a plate floating in a thin case made of steel plated filled with highly viscous silicone oil. Because VDW demonstrates both viscous damping and stiffness characteristics, the viscous resisting force can be expressed as the sum of velocity dependant viscous damping force and displacement dependant restoring force. The viscous resisting force and energy absorbing capacity can be easily adjusted by changing three factors, i.e. viscosity of the fluid, gap distance and area of the wall plates. VDW was tested using a series of harmonic (sinusoidal) displacement history having different frequency and amplitude and the force-displacement relationship was recorded. The relationship between dissipated energy with three factors and the influence of exciting frequency on resisting force were Investigated

MR(Magneto-Rheological) damper generates the magnetic shear force due to the cohesiveness of MR fluid influenced by a magnetic field. MR fluid consists of magnetic particles and a base liquid. In the present study, the damping forces of MR damper were investigated for density 1.3, 1.5 and $1.7g/cm^3$, and viscosity 1000 and 10000cp, and for the change of orifice shapes. It was found that the increase in the density and viscosity of MR fluid could change the damping force of MR damper due to the magnetic effects. Also, the damping forces on orifice shapes increased as the orifice gap and length decreased. These results showed that the properties of MR fluid and orifice shapes were important for the optimum design of MR damper.
An objective method for the evaluation of eating quality of cooked noodle was established by using a specially designed shear extrusion cell of Rheometer. From the force-distance curve, the maximum force, initial force, extrusion work, and the slope were determined. In a test with Korean dried noodles made from 17 types of Australian wheat flour, the maximum and initial forces and extrusion work could represent the firm-soft and chewy character, which govern mostly the preference of cooked noodle. On the other hand, the slope could distinguish the textural changes of cooked noodle during the storage after cooking. The parameters showed significant correlation with the protein content, water absorption, development time and extensibility of flour, but no correlation was obtained with the maximum viscosity of viscogram. For the estimation of textural preference, the correlation coefficient obtained from a multiple regression analysis using the maximum viscosity of viscogram and the maximum force of shear extrusion test as the two independent variables was not significantly higher than the coefficient obtained from a simple regression with the maximum force only.

In this study, the viscosity of carbon black filled HTPB liner, mechanical properties and bonding force between propellant and liner were investigated. It is difficult to apply carbon black filled HTPB liner to the motor case in using a horizontal centrifugal casting because of its high viscosity. This problem is solved as a ageing premix at $60^{\circ}C$. The viscosity of premix is drastically decreased from 464 to 200 poise after 6days ageing.

The capillary number is used to represent the mobilization potential of organic phase trapped within porous media. The capillary number has been defined by three different forms, according to types of flow velocity and viscosity used in the definition of capillary number. This study evaluated the suitability of the capillary number definitions for representing TCE mobilization by constructing capillary number-TCE saturation relationships. The results implied that the capillary number should be correctly employed, according to interest of scale and fluid flow behavior. This study suggests that the pore-scale capillary number may be used only for investigating the organic-phase mobilization at the pore scale because it is defined by the pore-velocity and the dynamic viscosity. The Newtonian-fluid capillary number using Darcy velocity and the dynamic viscosity may be suitable to quantify flood systems representing Newtonian fluid behavior. For viscous-force modified flood systems such as surfactant-foam floods, the apparent capillary number definition employing macroscopic properties (permeability and potential gradient) may be used to appropriately represent the desaturation of organic-phases from porous media.

Radial, tilting-pad proceeding bearings are applied in high speed rotating machines operating at stable small and mean loads and the peripheral speeds of proceeding reaching 150 m/s. The operation of bearing can be determined by static characteristics including the oil film pressure, temperature and viscosity distributions, minimum oil film thickness, load capacity, power loss, oil flow. The operation of 5-lobe tilted-pad proceeding bearing has been introduced at the assumption of adiabatic oil film. The oil film pressure, temperature and viscosity distributions habe received by iterative solution of the Reynolds', energy and viscosity equations. The resulting oil film force, minimum oil film thickness, power loss. oil flow, maximum oil film pressure, maximum temperature were computed for different sets of bearing geometric parameters as: bearing length to diameter ratio, pad angular length and width as well as pad relative clearance.
In order to examine the effect of the blank holding force on the friction behavior in the sheet metal forming, a sheet metal friction tester is designed and manufactured, which can measure friction forces in various forming conditions such as lubrication, die roughness, drawing speed, radius of die corner, blank holding force, etc., and the friction tests are performed, in which friction coefficients in various blank holding forces and pulling speeds are calculated using Coulomb's friction law. The friction test reveals that friction coefficient decreases as the blank holding force, the drawing speed and lubricant viscosity increase together or individually.
The slotted plate technique has previously been shown to be a successful method for directly measuring the static yield stress of suspensions. In this study, we further establish the usefulness of the slotted plate device as a rheometer especially at low shear rates, taking advantage of the extremely low speeds of the slotted plate technique. Newtonian fluids, a shear thinning fluid, and yield stress fluids were tested using the slotted plate device and the results were compared with those from a commercial rheometer using different standard flow geometries. The relationship between the stress on the plate and the viscosity for the slotted plate device obtained by dimensional analysis (drag) predicts a linear relationship between the force at the plate and the plate speed, consistent with the experimental data. The slotted plate device can measure viscosities at very low shear rates. The apparent viscosity - shear-rate data obtained from the slotted plate device are complementary to those obtained using a commercial rheometer. That is : the slotted plate can measure viscosity in the shear rate range $10^{-7}<\dot{\gamma}<10^{-3}\;s^{-1}$, while the commercial rheometer measures viscosity at shear rates higher than $10^{-3}\;s^{-1}$.
