We present a direct numerical simulation technique and some preliminary results of the capillary spreading of a droplet containing particles on the solid substrate. We used the level-set method with the continuous surface stress for description of droplet spreading with interfacial tension and employed the discontinuous Galerkin method for the stabilization of the interface advection equation. The distributed Lagrangian-multipliers method has been combined for the implicit treatment of rigid particles. We investigated the droplet spreading by the capillary force and discussed effects of the presence of particles on the spreading behavior. It has been observed that a particulate drop spreads less than the pure liquid drop. The amount of spread of a particulate drop has been found smaller than that of the liquid with effectively the same viscosity as the particulate drop.
The problem of transient laminar natural convection in compressible fluid in a rectangular enclosure is considered. The upper and lower boundaries of the enclosure are thermally insulating and the side boundaries are maintained at fixed temperatures. The fluid is considered to be a perfect gas with constant viscosity and thermal conductivity and the formulation differs from the boussinesq simplification in that the effects of variable density are completely retained. The motions are restricted to two dimensions. For incompressible fluid, the natural convection is driven mainly by buoyancy force. But the solutions show that for compressible fluid, the natural convection is driven by pressure and buoyancy forces and the thermally induced motion is acoustic in nature.

Flow over a bluff body is an attractive research field in thermal engineering. In the present study, laminar flow over a confined heated square cylinder using CuO-Water nanofluid is considered. Unsteady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved numerically using finite volume method (FVM). Recent correlations for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids, which are function of nanoparticle volume fraction, temperature and nanoparticle diameter, have been employed. The results of numerical solution are obtained for Richardson number, nanoparticle volume fractions and nanoparticle diameters ranges of 0-1, 1-5% and 30-100 nm respectively for a fixed Reynolds number of Re = 150. At a given volume concentration, the investigations reveal that the decreasing in size of nanoparticles produces an increase in heat transfer rates from the square cylinder and a decrease in amplitude of the lift coefficient. Also, the increment of Nusselt number is more pronounced at higher concentrations and higher Richardson numbers.

The Lubrication Mode of line contacts between the vane and the camring in an oil hydraulic vane pump has been investigated. First, the variations of the radial force of a vane were calculated from previous measurements of dynamic internal pressure in four chambers surrounding a vane. Next, the lubrication modes were distinguished with Hooke's chart, which is an improvement over Johnson's chart. Finally, the influence of the boundary conditions in the lubrication region on the fluid film lubrication was examined by calculating the film pressure distributions. The results showed that the lubrication mode of the vane tip exists in the rigid-variable-viscosity region, and that discharge pressure higher than 7 MPa greatly affects the oil film pressure in the small and the large arc section because of the Piezo-viscous effect.

The fatigue life of support bearings is one of the most critical factors for the performance of a control rod driving mechanism. They are operated at high temperature and high pressure and especially lubricated with dramatically low viscosity water. The support bearing is made of standardized 440C stainless steel, and it supports thrust load including the weight of the driving system and external force. Friction and wear characteristics of this material operating under severe lubrication condition is not well known yet, although it is expected to be changed with respect to temperature and boundary pressure. So the friction characteristics are investigated in sliding conditions using the reciprocating tribometer which can simulate the operating conditions. Highly purified water is used as lubricant, and the water is heated up and pressurized. Friction farce on the reciprocating specimens is monitored by the load cells. The results of the experiments are presented in this paper.
The lubrication modes of line contact between the vane and the camring in an oil hydraulic vane pump have been investigated. First, variations of the radial acting force of a vane were calculated from previously measured results of the dynamic internal pressure in four chambers surrounding a vane. Next, distinctions of the lubrication modes were made using Hooke's chart, which represents an improvement over Johnson's chart. Finally, the influence of boundary conditions in the lubrication region on fluid film lubrication was examined by calculating film pressure distributions. The results show that the lubrication modes of the vane tip are a rigid-variable viscosity region. This region discharges pressure higher than 7 MPa, and exerts a great influence on oil film pressure in the large arc section due to the Piezo-viscous effect.

Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid is applied to a controllable squeeze film damper(SFD) for stabilizing a flexible rotor system. ER fluid is a class of functional fluid whose yield stress varies according to the applied electric field strength, which is observed as viscosity variation of the fluid. In applying ER fluid to a SFD, a pair of rings of the damper can be used as electrodes. When the electrodes are divided into a horizontal pair and a vertical one, the SFD can produce damping force in each direction independently. A prototype of the directionally controllable SFD was constructed and its performance was experimentally and numerically investigated in the present work.
Polystyrene was degraded by using a vibrating ball mill. The viscosities and molecular weights of the degraded products were measured, and the decrease of viscosity $[\eta}$ with ${\dot{s}}$ (rate of shear) observed for the degraded products were analyzed by applying the Ree-Eyring equation for viscous flow. The variation of the parameters $x_2$/{\alhpa}_2,{\beta}_2$ and $x_1{\beta}_1/{\alpha}_1$ in the equation were explained by the fracture of polymer molecules by mechanical force. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of the degraded sample was taken, and it was confirmed that free radicals were produced by the chain-scission of polystyrene.
Effect of soaking temperature on erbium doping of the optical fiber core during solution doping procedure, especially in the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process, was investigated. The concentration of dopants such as $Er^{3+} and Al^{3+}$ in the preforms and the optical fibers measured by the electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) was found to increase with decreasing the soaking temperature. The increase in the concentration of the $Er^{3+}$ is attributed to the precipitation of the erbium due to the decrease in the solubility as well as the increase of capillary force and viscosity of the doping solution by decreasing the temperature.
Shear thickening is an intriguing phenomenon in the fields of chemical engineering and rheology because it originates from complex situations with experimental and numerical measurements. This paper presents results from the numerical modeling of the particle-fluid dynamics of a two-dimensional mixture of colloidal particles immersed in a fluid. Our results reveal the characteristic particle behavior with an application of a shear force to the upper part of the fluid domain. By combining the lattice Boltzmann and discrete element methods with the calculation of the lubrication forces when particles approach or recede from each other, this study aims to reveal the behavior of the suspension, specifically shear thickening. The results show that the calculated suspension viscosity is in good agreement with the experimental results. Results describing the particle deviation, diffusivity, concentration, and contact numbers are also demonstrated.
