In this study two dimensional visco-plastic finite element model capable of handling the multi-step excavation was developed for investigating the effect of excavation support sequences on the behavior of underground openings in the jointed rock mass. First, the finite element model which is capable of handling the multi-step excavation is developed and verified. And then the model is combined with visco-plastic joint model. Ubiquitous joint pattern was considered in the model and joint properties in cach set were assumed to be indentical. Passive, full-grouted rockbolts were cosidered in the numerical model. The visco-plastic deformations of joints and rockbolts were assumed to be governed by Mohr-Conlomb and von Mises yield criteria, respectively. With the ability of removing elements, the model can simulate the multi-step excavation-suppport sequences. The reliability and applicability of the model to the stability analysis for the underground excavation in pratice was checked by simulating the behavior of underground crude oil storage caverns under construction.
Soil disturbance induced by installation of mandrel driven vertical drains decreases the in situ horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the soil in the vicinity of the drains, decelerating the consolidation rate. According to available literature, several different profiles for the hydraulic conductivity variation with the radial distance from the vertical drain, influencing the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate, have been identified. In addition, it is well known that the visco-plastic properties of the soil also influence the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently the settlement rate. In this study, a numerical solution adopting an elastic visco-plastic model with nonlinear creep function incorporated in the consolidation equations has been developed to investigate the effects of disturbed zone properties on the time dependent behaviour of soft soil deposits improved with vertical drains and preloading. The employed elastic visco-plastic model is based on the framework of the modified Cam-Clay model capturing soil creep during excess pore water pressure dissipation. Besides, nonlinear variations of creep coefficient with stress and time and permeability variations during the consolidation process are considered. The predicted results have been compared with V$\ddot{a}$sby test fill measurements. According to the results, different variations of the hydraulic conductivity profile in the disturbed zone result in varying excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently varying the effective vertical stresses in the soil profile. Thus, the creep coefficient and the creep strain limit are notably influenced resulting in significant changes in the predicted settlement rate.
When a ground soil is under the constant continuous stress less than the failure strength of that soil, its deformation, in some cases, will increase continuously as time goes on due to creep phenomena. Deformation of soil caused by creep behavior will appear in various types depending on the elastic, plastic, viscous properties of soil. Therefore in this study, visco-plastic characteristics of grouted soil was studied by analysing the result of uniaxial creep test on the grouted soil. As a result of this research, it was found that the rheological model of grouted soil can be decided as Vyalov model and the visco-plastic properties of grouted soil is influenced by the content of silicate in grout.
Rock mass contains discontinuities such as faults and joints, and their mechanical properties and spatial distribution dominate the stability of rock mass. Because the deformation of rock mass occurs discontinuities in many cases. However in the case of poor quality rock mass under high stresses, the deformation along intact rock can also influence the structure's stability. In this study, two dimensional finite element program was developed with a rheological model to analyze the stability of the structure excavated in jointed rock mass. The “equivalent material” approach was used assuming intact rock, joints and rock bolts as visco-plastic materials. The program was verified by analysing an intact rock model, a jointed rock mass model and a reinforced jointed rock mass model. The displacement was examined in each model with changing the intact rock behaviour as elastic and visco-plastic. In the case of poor quality rock mass under high stresses, e assumption of visco-plastic behaviour of intact rock resulted in larger displacement than when assuming elastic behaviour for intact rock. Therefore it is recommended to add intact rock's visco-plastic behaviour to the existing model, which only assumes visco-plastic behaviour of joints and rock bolts.
A two dimensional visco-plastic finite element model capable of handling the multistep excavaton was developed for investigating the effect of excavation-support sequences on the behaviour of underground openings in the jointed rock mass. Ubiquitous joint pattern was considered in the model and joint properties in each set were assumed to be identical. Passive, fully-grouted rockbolts were considered in the model. Visco-plastic deformations of joints and rockbolts were assumed to be governed by Mohr-Coulomb and von Mises yield criteria, respectively. With the ability of removing elements, the model can von Mises yield criteria, respectively. With the ability of removing elements, the model can simulate the multi-step excavation-support sequences. The reliability of the model to the stability analysis for the underground excavation in practice was checked by simulating the behavior of underground crude oil storage caverns under construction.

In this study, the rheological models were introduced and developed to reflect rate dependent tensile behaviour of concrete. In general, mechanical properties(e.g. strength, elasticity, and fracture energy) of concrete are increased under high loading rates. The strength of concrete shows high rate dependency among its mechanical properties, and the tensile strength has higher rate dependency than the compressional strength. To simulate the rate dependency of concrete, original spring set of RBSN(Rigid-Body- Spring-Network) model was adjusted with viscous and friction units(e.g. dashpot and Coulomb friction component). Three types of models( 1) visco-elastic, 2) visco-plastic, and 3) visco-elasto- plastic damage models) are considered, and the constitutive relationships for the models are derived. For validation purpose, direct tensile test were simulated, and characteristics of the three different rheological models were compared with experimental stress-strain responses. Simulation result of the developed visco-elasto-plastic damage(VEPD) model demonstrated well describing and fitting with experimental results.
In the present paper, the overall state of the arts of ice mechanics which is the most typical research topic of the artic engineering field was studied. And also, ice loads genrated by ice-structure interaction were estimated using numerical approach. The effects of viscous property of ice sheets to the ice load were investigated. The time dependent deformation behaviors of ice was modeled by visco-plastic problem using the finite element formalism. Constitutive model representing the material properties of ice was idealized by comblned rheological model with Maxwell and Voigt models. Numerical calculations for the bending and crushing behavior of ice sheet which are the most typical interaction modes between ice sheets and structures were carried out. The time dependent viscous behaviors of ice sheets interaction forces acting on structures were analyzed and the results were studied in detail.

The behavior of the work materials in the chip-tool interface in extremely high strain rates and temperatures is more that of viscous liquids than that of normal solid metals. In these circumstances the principles of fluid mechanics can be invoked to describe the metal flow in the neighborhood of the cutting edge. In the present paper an Eulerian finite element model is presented that simulates metal flow in the vicinity of the cutting edge when machining a low carbon steel with carbide cutting tool. The work material is assumed to obey visco-plastic (Bingham solid) constitutive law and Von Mises criterion. Heat generation is included in the model, assuming adiabatic conditions within each element. the mechanical and thermal properties of the work material are accepted to vary with the temperature. The model is based on the virtual work-stream function formulation, emphasis is given on analyzing the formation of the stagnant metal zone ahead of the cutting edge. The model predicts flow field characteristics such as material velocity effective stress and strain-rate distributions as well as built-up layer configuration
To better understand the formation of necking in drawing processes of fibers, strain distributions during drawing processes have been analyzed. For simplicity, one-dimensional incompressible steady flow at a constant temperature was assumed and quasi-static model was used. To describe mechanical properties of solid polymers, non-linear visco-plastic material properties were assumed using the power law type hardening and rate-sensitive equation. The effects of various parameters on the neck formation were matematically analyzed. As material property parameters, strain-hardening parameter, visco-elastic coefficient and strain-rate sensitivity were considered and, for process parameters, the drawing ratio and the process length were considered. It was found that rate-insensitive materials do not reach a steady flow state and the rate-sensitivity plays a key role to have a steady flow. Also, the neck formation is mainly affected by material properties, especially for the quasi-static model. If the process length changes, the strain distribution was found to be proportionally re-distributed along the process line by the factor of the total length change.
A visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) polycrystal model has been applied to simulate texture simulation and anisotropic properties of DP steels during deep drawing process. In order to evaluate the strain path during deep drawing, a steady state was assumed in the flange part of deep drawn cup. The final stable orientations were strongly dependent on the initial location in the blank. The evolution of anisotropy of DP steel sheets has been demonstrated through comparison of plastic strain rate vector at the different plastic strain levels.
