  • In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.

  • To perform the finish outside-diameter grinding process of ferrules which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, a high-precision centerless grinding machine is necessary. In this study, the thermal characteristics of the high-precision centerless grinding machine such as the temperature distribution, temperature rise and thermal deformation, are estimated based on the virtual prototype of the grinding machine and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to the machine operation conditions. The reliability of the predicted results is demonstrated by the temperature characteristics measured from the physical prototype. Especially, the predicted and measured results show the fact that the high-precision centerless grinding machine consisted of the hydrostatic GW and RW spindle systems, hydrostatic RW feeding mechanism, RW swivel mechanism, on-machine GW and RW dressers, and concrete-filled steel bed, has very stable thermal characteristics.

  • The 3D mesh model is used in various fields, such as virtual reality, shape-based searching, 3D simulation, reverse engineering, 3D printing, and laser scanning. There are various formats for the 3D mesh model, but STL and OBJ are the most typical. Since application systems support different 3D mesh formats, developing technology for converting 3D mesh models from one format into another is necessary to ensure data interoperability among systems. In this paper, we propose a method to convert a 3D mesh model in STL format into the OBJ format. We performed the basic design of the conversion system and developed a prototype, then verified the proposed method by experimentally converting an STL file into an OBJ file for test cases using this prototype.

  • In this paper, we proposed vertical feeding mechanism for a slide parts feeder using the slide type method. This parts feeder of the slide type method have been proposed to suppress the dust generation from the feeding objects. The proposed parts feeder mechanism is composed with the casing hopper, the vertical feeding unit, the in-line feeder and linear shooter unit. And, these mechanisms did modularity through optimum design by means of mechanical and dynamical analysis using the RecurDyn(multi-body dynamics) analysis module. Also were carried out the virtual prototype using the 3-D CAD program. And it had been manufactured as the prototype of the slide parts feeder. The field test for validation of performance was performed directly at the inspection line of bolt and screw. In the field test, this slide parts feeder showed an efficiency of about 1.2 times the bowl feeder. It also showed an epoch reduction in the dust generation compared to the vibration bowl feeder. So this slide parts feeder will be applied useful in the vision inspection system for a screw and bolt.

  • Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Discrete Event Simulation (DES) are tools widely used in the context of the construction industry. While BIM is used to represent the physical and functional characteristics of a facility, DES models are used to represent its construction process. Integrating both is beneficial to those interested in the field of construction management since it has many potential applications. Game engines provide a human navigable 3D virtual environment in which the integrated BIM and DES models can be visualised and interacted with. This paper reports the experience obtained while developing a simulator prototype which integrates a BIM and a DES model of a single construction activity within a commercial game engine. The simulator prototype allows the user to visualise how the duration of the construction activity is affected by different input parameters interactively. It provides an environment to conduct DES studies using the user's own BIM models. This approach could increase the use of DES technologies in the context of construction management and engineering outside the research community. The presented work is the first step towards the development of a serious game for construction management education and was carried out to determine the suitable IT tools for its development.

  • High-precision centerless grinding machines are emerging as a means of finishing the outer diameter grinding process required for ferrules, which are widely used as fiber optic connectors. In this study, a sensitivity analysis for structural and thermal characteristics was carried out using a virtual prototype of a centerless grinding machine to realize systematic design technology and performance improvements required to manufacture ferrules. The prototype consisted of a concrete-filled bed, hydrostatic grinding wheel (GW) and regulating wheel (RW) spindle systems, a hydrostatic RW table feed mechanism, a RW swivel mechanism, and on-machine GW and RW dressers. The results of the structural sensitivity analysis illustrated that the vertical stiffness of hydrostatic guideway for the RW table feed system greatly influenced the horizontal loop stiffness, and the results of the thermal sensitivity analysis illustrated that the heat generation rates at hydrostatic bearings and belt pulley greatly influenced the temperature rise of hydrostatic bearings and the deviation of thermal displacement between GW and RW.

  • This paper proposes a novel computer-human interface, named invisible Messenger. It integrates face detection and tracking, and speaker array signal processing. By speaker array it is possible to form acoustic focus at the arbitrary location that is measured by the face tracking. Thus the proposed system can whisper in a person's ear as if an invisible virtual messenger were standing by the person. Not only speculative discussion, the authors have implemented a working prototype system based upon the proposed idea. This paper also describes about this prototype. In order to confirm effectiveness of the proposed idea, the authors conduct experiments using the implemented system. Experimental results demonstrate the effectivenss of the proposed idea.

  • In this paper, we proposed an automatic packing mechanism of one station concept for fastener objects where the continuous work is performed in a finite space. The proposed packing mechanism is composed of supporting frame, feeding supply, air shower device, clamping/opening device, batch charging device, sealing/cutting device and supply adjusting device. And, these mechanisms have been modularized through mechanical, dynamical, structural and fluid optimized design using the SMO(SimDesigner Motion) analysis module. Also, the virtual prototype was carried out using the 3-D CAD program. The packing process is consisted performed in the order of feeding, clamping, bottom sealing, cutting, opening, object charging, closing and the upper sealing. And the time of these cycles were designed to be completed in 15-20 seconds. This packing mechanism will be created as a prototype in the near future. In addition, it will be applied to the production scenes after going through a field test for the validation of performance.

  • In this paper, we propose the NAVER, a general framework for multipurpose virtual environments, and introduce the case study of evaluating car prototypes using cave-like systems. As a framework to implement variant applications in virtual environment, NAVER is extensible, reconfigurable and scalable. NAVER consists of several external modules (Render Server, Control Server and Device Server), which communicate each other to share states and user-provided data and to perform their own functions. NAVER supports its own scripting language based on XML which allows a user to define variant interactions between objects in virtual environments as well as describe the scenario of an application. We used NAVER to implement the system for evaluating car prototyes in a CAVE-like virtual environment system. The CAVE-like virtual environment system at KIST consists three side screens and a floor screen (each of them is a square with side of 2.2m), four CRT projectors displays stereoscopic images to the screens, a haptic armmaster, and a 5.1 channel sound system. The system can provide a sense of reality by displaying auditory and tactile senses as well as visual images at the same time. We evaluate car prototypes in a CAVE-like system in which a user can observe, touch and manipulate the virtual installation of car interior.
