Design of a Hybrid Serial-Parallel Robot for Multi-Tasking Machining Processes (ICCAS 2005)

  • This paper presents a new hybrid serial-parallel robot(HSPR), which has six degrees of freedom driven by ball screw linear actuators and motored joints. This hybrid robot design presents a compromise between high rigidity of fully parallel manipulators and extended workspace of serial manipulators. The hybrid robot has a large, singularity-free workspace and high stiffness. Therefore, the presented kinematic structure of the hybrid robot is particularly suitable for multi-tasking machining processes such as milling, drilling, deburring and grinding. In addition to the machining processes, the hybrid robot can be used for welding, fixturing, material handling and so on. The study on design of the hybrid robot is performed. A kinematic analysis and mechanism description of the hybrid robot with six-controlled degree of freedom is presented. In the virtual design works by DADS, workspace and force analysis are discussed. A numerical model is treated to demonstrate our analysis and to determine the range of permissible extension of the struts. Also, we determine some important design parameters for the hybrid robot.

  • Recently, advanced information technologies including Internet-related technology and distributed object technology have opened new possibilities for collaborative designs. In this paper, we discuss computer supports for collaborative design in a distributed environment. The proposed system is the Internet-centric system composed of an engineering framework, collaborative virtual workspace and engineering service. It allows the distributed designers to more efficiently and collaboratively work their engineering tasks throughout the design process.

  • This paper presents a haptic display of a cooperative work between the networked multiple users. Excluding the possibility of large timedelay among the users, it is presented the way of configuring individual haptic display systems including the computation of interaction forces, joint driving forces of haptic devices and simulation of the virtual objects. A haptic display system is developed consisting of two haptic display devices operated by two remote users and experimental results to show the validity of the proposed method are also presented.

  • This paper presents cable-hydraulic driven 3DoF (Degree-of-Freedom) manipulator for cooperative robot with high output/low inertia and enhancing lager workspace of hydraulic manipulator. Hydraulic actuation could be solution to design more higher output manipulator than the one of electric motor actuation due to install actuation source and robot joint separated. In spite of this advantage, the conventional hydraulic driven manipulator using cylinder or vane actuator is not suitable for the candidate of cooperative robot because smaller workspace owing to small RoM (Range of Motion) hydraulic actuator. In this paper, we propose 3DoF manipulator with cable-hydraulic actuation which is more larger ratio of payload-to-weight than the one of conventional cooperative manipulator and larger workspace than the one of existing hydraulic driven manipulator. The performance of proposed manipulator was demonstrated by the experiments for confirming overall workspace task, high payload operation task under worst situation and comparing repeatability between developed manipulator and existed cooperative robots. The results of experiments showed that the appropriate performance of proposed manipulator for cooperative robot.

힘 반향 가상원격조작 시스템을 이용한 가상 물체 탐색에 관한 연구 (A Study on a Virtual Object Exploration Using a Force Reflection Virtual Teleoperation System)

  • This paper develops a master manipulator which can reflect a force from a slave manipulator effectively. It many have a big workspace, can represent a human operators manipulation perfectly, and is composed of a position control part, an orientation control part and an end effector control part. This paper also develops a graphic simulator using the Visual C++ and OpenGL in the Window operating system. It can be used to make a virtual slave manipulator and set a virtual working environment, and provide a visual information from a desired view point. A virtual teleoperation system is developed by connecting the developed master manipulator to the graphic simulator using an interfacing hardware bilaterally. It is used for performing a virtual object exploration experiment. In the experiment, two virtual objects are used. They are virtual wall and virtual hexahedron which have 0.7N/mm and 2.2 N/mm stiffness respectively. The experiments are performed under six different working conditions. The experiment results will show the effectiveness of the reflected force from the slave manipulator for improving the efficiency and stability of the teleoperation task.

비전 기반 무인반송차의 효과적인 운행을 위한 가상추적륜 기반 유도선 추적 기법 (A Guideline Tracing Technique Based on a Virtual Tracing Wheel for Effective Navigation of Vision-based AGVs)

  • Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are widely used in industry. Several types of vision-based AGVs have been studied in order to reduce cost of infrastructure building at floor of workspace and to increase flexibility of changing the navigation path layout. A practical vision-based guideline tracing method is proposed in this paper. A virtual tracing wheel is introduced and adopted in this method, which enables a vision-based AGV to trace a guideline in diverse ways. This method is also useful for preventing damage of the guideline by enforcing the real steering wheel of the AGV not to move on the guideline. Usefulness of the virtual tracing wheel is analyzed through computer simulations. Several navigation tests with a commercial AGV were also performed on a usual guideline layout and we confirmed that the virtual tracing wheel based tracing method could work practically well.

  • This paper presents a scaled teleoperation scheme for 3-D microassembly on the experimental microassembly workcell. A workspace mapping between a master and a slave microrobot system is presented to teleoperatively control the microrobot system for microassembly such as peg-in-hole task. Based on this result, a scaling factor is designed and applied to the teleoperated micromanipulation for peg-in-hole task in a mesoscale. Using 3-D virtual simulator, the workspace of microrobot system, and the working path trajectory for microassembly is visually represented.   • The crane and the master-slave manipulators (MSM) are widely used as a remote handling device in nuclear facilities such as the hot cell. The equipment to be installed in the hot cell should be optimally placed within the workspace of the wall-mounted slave manipulator for the maintenance operation.
