  • In contemporary video streaming systems based on HTTP protocol, video players at the client side are responsible for adjusting video quality to network conditions and user expectations. However, when multiple video clips are streamed simultaneously, an intricate application logic implemented in the video players overlays the TCP mechanism which is responsible for a balanced access to a shared network link. As a result, some video players may not obtain a fair share of network throughput and may be vulnerable to an unstable video bit-rate. Therefore, we propose to simplify the algorithms implemented in the video players, which are responsible for the adjustment of video quality and constrain their functionality only to sending feedback to a server about a state of the player buffer. The main logic of the system is shifted to the server, which is now responsible for bit-rate selection and prioritisation of the video streams transmitted to multiple clients. To verify our proposition, we performed several experiments in a laboratory environment which show that when the server cooperates with the clients, the video players experience fewer quality switches and the system achieves better fairness when allocating network throughput among the video players. However, this comes at the cost of worse utilisation of network bandwidth.

  • In video-based recognition systems, stationary cameras are used to monitor an area of interest. These systems focus on a segmentation of the foreground in the video stream and the recognition of the events occurring in that area. The usual approach to discriminating the foreground from the video sequence is background subtraction. This paper presents a novel background subtraction method based on a probabilistic approach. We represent the posterior probability of the foreground based on the current image and all past images and derive an updated method. Furthermore, we present an efficient fusion method for the color and edge information in order to overcome the difficulties of existing background subtraction methods that use only color information. The suggested method is applied to synthetic data and real video streams, and its robust performance is demonstrated through experimentation.

  • Object segmentation fro natural video scenes has recently become one of very active research to pics due to the object-based video coding standard MPEG-4. Object detection and isolation is also useful for object-based indexing and search of video content, which is a goal of the emerging new standard, MPEG-7. In this paper, an automatic segmentation method of moving objects in image sequence is presented which is applicable to multimedia content authoring for MPEG-4, and two different segmentation approaches suitable for surveillance applications are addressed in raw data domain and compressed bitstream domains. We also propose an object-based video description scheme based on object segmentation for video indexing purposes.

  • In this thesis, we propose a semantics-based video retrieval system which supports semantics-retrieval for various users of massive video data. Proposed system automatically processes the extraction of contents information which video data has and retrieval process using agent which integrate annotation-based retrieval and feature-based retrieval. From experiment, the designed and implemented system shows increase of recall rate and precision rate for video data scene retrieval in performance assessment.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient image size selection method for video-based point cloud compression. The current MPEG video-based point cloud compression reference encoding process configures a threshold on the size of images while converting point cloud data into images. Because the converted image is compressed and restored by the legacy video codec, the size of the image is one of the main components in influencing the compression efficiency. If the image size can be made smaller than the image size determined by the threshold, compression efficiency can be improved. Here, we studied how to improve the compression efficiency by selecting the best-fit image size generated during video-based point cloud compression. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the encoding time by 6 percent without loss of coding performance compared to the test model 15.0 version of video-based point cloud encoder.

  • The Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP(DASH) is envisioned to evolve to meet an increasing demand on providing seamless video streaming services in the near future. The DASH performance heavily depends on the client's adaptive quality selection algorithm that is not included in the standard. The existing conventional algorithms are basically based on a procedural algorithm that is not easy to capture and reflect all variations of dynamic network and traffic conditions in a variety of network environments. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a novel quality selection mechanism based on the Deep Q-Network(DQN) model, the DQN-based DASH Adaptive Bitrate(ABR) mechanism. The proposed mechanism adopts a new reward calculation method based on five major performance metrics to reflect the current conditions of networks and devices in real time. In addition, the size of the consecutive video segment to be downloaded is also considered as a major learning metric to reflect a variety of video encodings. Experimental results show that the proposed mechanism quickly selects a suitable video quality even in high error rate environments, significantly reducing frequency of quality changes compared to the existing algorithm and simultaneously improving average video quality during video playback.

  • In recent years, we can access to video contents anywhere and at any time. Therefore distributed video is easily copied, transformed and republished. Since it brings copyright problem, similarity/duplicate detection and measurement is essential to identify the excessive content duplication. In this paper, we analysed various discernment of video which has been transformed with various ways using MPEG-7 Video Signature. MPEG-7 Video Signature, one of video copy detection algorithms, is block based abstraction. Thus we assume Video Signature is weak for spatial transform. The experiments show that MPEG-7 Video Signature is very weak for spatial transform which could occur general as we have assumed.

  • A region-based video codec based on the H.263+ standard is examined and its associated novel rate control scheme is proposed in this work. The region-based coding scheme is a hybrid method that consists of the traditional block DCT coding and the object-based coding. Basically, we adopt H.263+ as the platform, and develop a fast macroblock-based segmentation method to implement the region-based video codec. The proposed rate control solution includes rate control in three levels: encoding frame selection, frame-layer rate control and macroblock-layer rate control. The goal is to enhance the visual quality of decoded frames at low bit rates. The efficiency of proposed rate control scheme applied to the region-based video codes is demonstrated via several typical test sequences.

  • In this paper, we propose a low bit-rate embedded video coding scheme with 3-D block partition in the wavelet domain. The proposed video coding scheme includes multi-level three dimensional dyadic wavelet decomposition, raster scanning within each subband, partitioning of blocks, and adaptive arithmetic entropy coding. Although the proposed video coding scheme is quite simple, it produces bit-streams with good features, including SNR scalability from the embedded nature. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed video coding scheme is quite competitive to other good wavelet-based video coders in the literature.

  • With the continued popularity of mobile devices such as smart-phones and tables, the development of the various kinds of digital contents making tools has not increased only the productivity of the digital contents, but also the demand of them rapidly. Geo-contents which means the digital contents related to location(geographic) information has enabled the user custom services. Especially, there are already some commercial location-based services that provide the user to POI (Points of Interest) with the geo-image contents such as photos tagged by the location. In the geo-video contents, there could be several related locations in the whole video, but only one representative location is used to tag a location to the video. In this paper, we have define the geo-video as a video content which has as many locations as the number of frames composing the video. We have also proposed the geo-video making tools and a viewer to create and utilize the geo-video contents. The geo-video contents proposed in this paper, are widely used in location based video contents searching services.
