The benefit of data fusion in improving the performance of Higher Order Sliding Mode (HOSM) observer is brought out in this paper. This improvement in the performance of HOSM observer, resulted in the improvement of active vibration control of a piezo actuated structure, when controlled by a Discrete Sliding Mode Controller (DSMC). The structure is embedded with two piezo sensors for measuring the first two vibrating modes. The fused output of sensors is applied to the HOSM observer for generating state estimates, these states generated are applied to the DSMC, designed for the fourth order linear time invariant model of the structure. In the simulation study, the structure is excited at the first and second mode resonance. It is found that better vibration suppression is obtained, when the states generated by the fused output of sensors is applied as controller input, than the vibration suppression obtained by applying the states generated by using individual sensor output. The closed loop performance of DSMC obtained with HOSM observer is compared with the closed loop performance obtained with the conventional observer. Results obtained shows that better vibration suppression is obtained when the states generated by HOSM observer is applied as controller input.

Many analytical and experimental studies on the active suppression of nonlinear panel flutter by using piezoceramic patch have been carried out. However, these active control methods have a few important problems; a large amount of power is required to operate actuators, and additional apparatuses such as sensor systems and controller are needed. In this study passive suppression schemes for nonlinear flutter of composite panel, which is believed to be more robust suppression system than active control in practical operation, are proposed by using piezoelectric inductor-resistor series shunt circuit. Toward the end, a finite element equation of motion for an electromechanically coupled system is proposed using the Hamilton's principle. To achieve the best damping effect, optimal shape and location of the piezoceramic(PZT) patches are determined by using genetic algorithms. The results clearly demonstrate that the passive damping scheme by using piezoelectric shunt circuit can effectively attenuate the flutter.

Excessive vibration in rotating machinery is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing such difficulties as fatigue of machinery components and failure of supporting bearings. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuated vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to provide vibration control perform beyond that provided by their passive counters. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress rotating machinery displacements. In cases where vibration results in bearing failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic bearing loads which would be even more harmful to bearings). This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in rotating machinery. One method minimizes shaft displacements while the other minimizes dynamic bearing reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical rotating machinery system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase bearing loads, while bearing load minimization, on the other hand, decreases bearing loads.
An inerter is a passive mechanical element whose inertance can be thousands of times its own physical mass. This paper discusses the application of an inerter-based passive control system, termed rotational inertial double-tuned mass damper (RIDTMD), to mitigate human-induced floor vibrations. First, the acceleration frequency response function of the floor with an RIDTMD is first derived. It is then employed to determine the optimal design parameters of the RIDTMD using the extended fixed-points technique. Based on a theoretical analysis, design-oriented empirical functions are proposed for the RIDTMD optimal parameters, whose performance for floor vibration control is evaluated by numerical examples, in which three typical human-induced load types are considered: walking, jumping, and bouncing. The results indicate that the applicability and effectiveness of the RIDTMD for human-induced floor vibration control are robust for various load types, load frequencies, and floor natural frequencies. For the same mass ratio, the RIDTMD is better than the TMD in reducing the floor vibration amplitude and improving the effective frequency suppression bandwidth, and for the same vibration suppression effect, the mass of the RIDTMD is much lighter than that of the TMD.

In this paper, a pseudo-sensor-output-feedback(PSOF) control approach is applied to the active and semi-active systems for the vibration suppression of the flexible structures. This approach reduces the modeling error encounted in the output equation formulation and is easy to be implemented in practice. Experimental works are performed for the validation of theoretical predictions with a piezoelectric sensor and actuator bonded on the cantilever beam. The objective of this study is also to compare and analyze between active and semi-active systems. An algorithm based on the sliding mode control theory is developed and analyzed for the robustness to the modeling errors and parameter uncertainties.
Adaptive algorithms based on gradient adaptation have been extensively investigated and successfully jointed with active noise/vibration control applications. The Filtered-X LMS algorithm became one of the basic feedforward algorithms in such applications, but still is not fully understood. The error path model effect on the Filtered-X LMS algorithm has been under the investigation and some useful properties related stability has been discovered. We are interested in utilizing the fact that the model error caused by the way optimizing the error path model in a view point of convergence speed of Filtered-X LMS algorithm for pure tone noise suppression application without any performance loss at steady state.

This paper presents active control methodologies to suppress structural deflections of a composite beam using a distributed piezoelectric-film actuator and sensor. Three types of different controllers are employed to achieve vibration suppression. The controllers are established depending upon the information on the velocity components of the structrue and on the deflection magnitudes as well. They are constant-amplitude controller(CAC), constant-gain mcontroller(CGC), and constant-amplitude-gain controller(CAGC). For the minimization of the residual vibration (chattering in a settled phase), which is the practical shortcoming of the conventional CAC dur to time delay phenomenon of the hardware system, a new control algoritym CAGCis designed by selecting switching constants in an optimal manner with respect to the initial tip deflection and the applied voltage. The experimental investigations of the transient and forced vibration control for the first vibrational mode are undertaken in order to compare the suppression efficiency of each control algorithm. Moreover, simultaneous controllability of various vibrational modes through the proposed scheme is also experimentally verified by pressenting both the transfer function and the phase.
The visualizing energy flow and control in vibrating stiffened plates with a cutout are studied using finite element method. The vibration intensity, vibration energy and strain energy distribution of stiffened plates with cutout at different excitation frequencies are calculated respectively and visualized for the various cases. The cases of different size and boundaries conditions of cutouts are also investigated. It is found that the cutout or opening completely changes the paths and distributions of the energy flow in stiffened plate. The magnitude of energy flow is significantly larger at the edges near the cutout boundary. The position of maximum strain energy distribution is not corresponding to the position of maximum vibrational energy. Furthermore, the energy-based control using constrained damping layer (CDL) for vibration suppression is also analyzed. According to the energy distribution maps, the CDL patches are applied to the locations that have higher energy distribution at the targeted mode of vibration. The energy-based CDL treatments have produced significant attenuation of the vibration energy and strain energy. The present energy visualization technique and energy-based CDL treatments can be extended to the vibration control of vehicles structures.
This paper is a study on the fuzzy force control of a miniature gripper driven by piezoelectric bimorph actuator. The system is composed of two flexible cantilevers, a stepping motor, a laser displacement transducer and two semiconductor force sensors attached to the beams. Obtained results show that the present artificial finger system works well as a miniature gripper, which produces approximately 0.06N force in the maximum. Further, the fuzzy position/force control algorithm is applied to the soft-handing gripper for stable grasping of a object. It revealed that the fuzzy rule-based controller be efficient controller for the stable drive of the flexible miniature gripper. It also showed that two semiconductor strain gauges located in the flexible beam play an important roles for force control, position control and vibration suppression control.

Although piezoelectric materials such as PZT have been widely used as actuators in the field of active vibration suppression, the use of bare PZT as an actuator may cause some drawbacks such as critical breaks in the installation process, short circuits in the host material and low fatigue performance. The LIPCA-C2 (lightweight piezocomposite actuator) was developed to alleviate these problems. We implemented the LIPCA as an actuator to suppress the vibration of an aluminum cantilever beam with a tip mass. In our test, we used positive position feedback control algorithm. The filter frequency for this type of feedback should be tuned to the natural frequency of the target mode. The first three experimental natural frequencies of the aluminum cantilever beam agree well with the results of finite element analysis. The effectiveness of using the LIPCA as an actuator in active vibration suppression was investigated with respect to the time and frequency domains, and the experimental results show that LIPCAs with PPF control can significantly reduce the amplitude of forced vibrations and the settling time of free vibrations. For a case study, the forced vibration control of several beams with different thicknesses were performed.
