  • On this paper, piezoelectric generators using piezoelectric ceramics were designed and fabricated. Generators were made by attaching cymbal type metal plates on upper and bottom sides of a disc type piezoelectric ceramic. Generator converts wasting mechanical energy to electrical energy. Output voltage was increased when thickness of ceramic and displacement of vibration were increased. Temperature of the ceramic was increased when it generates, but the temperature rising was saturated at certain temperature.

  • Wearable and ubiquitous micro systems will be greatly growing and their related devices should be self-powered in order to avoid the replacement of finite power sources, for example, by scavenging energy from the environment. With ever reducing power requirements of both analog and digital circuits, power scavenging approaches are becoming increasingly realistic. One approach is to drive an electromechanical converter from ambient motion or vibration. Vibration-driven generators based on electromagnetic, electrostatic and piezoelectric technologies have been demonstrated. Among various generator types proposed so far, piezoelectric generator possesses considerable potential in micro system. To overcome low mechanical-to-electric energy conversion, the piezoelectric device should activate in resonance mode in response to external vibration. Normally, the external vibration excretes at low frequency ranging 0.1 to 200 Hz, whereas the resonant frequencies of the devices are fixed as constant. Therefore, keeping their resonant mode in varying external vibration can be one of important points in enhancing the conversion efficiency. We investigated the possibility of use of multi-bender type piezoelectric devices. To match the external vibration frequency with the device resonant frequency, the various devices with different resonant frequency were chosen.

  • Two-phase cross-flow exists in many shell-tube heat exchangers such as steam generators, condensers and reboilers. An understanding of flow-induced vibration excitation mechanism is necessary to avoid problems due to excessive tube vibration. This paper presents the results of a series of experiments done on tube bundles of different geometries subjected to two-phase cross-flow simulated by air-water mixtures. Normal(30$^{\circ}$) and rotated (60$^{\circ}$)triangular, and normal(90$^{\circ}$) and rotated (45$^{\circ}$) square tube bundle configurations of pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.2 to 1.5 were tested over a range of mass fluxes from 0 to 1,000kg/$m^2$ㆍ s and void fraction from 0 to 100%. The effects of tube bundle geometry on vibration excitation mechanism such as fluidelastic instability and random turbulence, and on dynamic parameters such as damping and hydrodynamic mass are discussed. A lower pitch-to-diameter results in a higher hydrodynamic mass. The effect of tube bundle configurations on damping and random turbulence excitation is minor. The effect of pitch-to-diameter on the fluidelastic instability, however, is significant.

  • Recently, turbine-generators have been replaced for the integrity reinforcement and the efficiency improvement, also, the blade's failures of LP turbines due to torsional vibration have been reported. Excessive torsional vibrations can result in failures of components. The severity of torsional oscillations and stress depends upon the separation margin between the excitation frequencies and torsional natural frequencies. Therefore it is needed to measure the torsional natural frequencies after replacement of the components to conform the separation margin of torsional natural frequencies. In this study torsional vibration measurements were performed after LP turbine and generator replacement and the torsional natural frequencies for the turbine-generator train were calculated to evaluate the effects of generator replacement on torsional natural frequencies of turbine-generator train. It is expected that these evaluation results will be used effectively to identify the root causes of torsional vibration problems.

  • We have fabricated a micro power generator which changes vibrational energy into useful energy. With vibrating a magnet on the surface of a winding coil, the micro power generator produce alternating voltage. We have changed the vibrational frequency from 0.5Hz to 10Hz. AC voltage of $20{\sim}25mV$ was generated at the frequency of 1Hz. When the vibration was 3Hz, AC voltage of 80mV was obtained. We have rectified and stepped up the input voltage using a quadrupler circuit. The voltage was stepped up to 130mV.

  • Recently data centers are being established or expanded according to IT industry development. A data center must be to install emergency generator. In case of the data center located the densely populated urban area, the operating noise of an emergency generator can be the cause of complains. In this case, in order to establish an effective and economical measure and quantitative and thorough review is needed by noise & vibration specialists. To achieve this, in this study, it is suggested noise reduction measure using noise measurement data and 3D noise analysis method.

  • Electromagnetic forces generate vibrations in the end-winding of large generators. A finite element analysis using a commercial S/W is performed to calculate electromagnetic force of end-winding in two pole generator for 500 MW fossil power plant. Also, this paper presents analytical and experimental modal analysis results of generator end- winding. Using validated FE model, 3D electromagnetic model which computes the forces on the end-winding is coupled with a 3D mechanical model which calculates the dynamic displacement and stress under electromagnetic forces. These results will be used to evaluate reliability of end-winding and applied to update model.

  • We propose an electrically self-reliant structural health monitoring (SHM) system that is able to wirelessly transmit sensing data using electrical power generated by vibration without the need for additional external power sources. The provision of reliable electricity to wireless SHM systems is a highly important issue that has often been ignored, and to expand the applicability of various wireless SHM innovations, it will be necessary to develop comprehensive wireless SHM devices including stable electricity sources. In light of this need, we propose a new, highly efficient vibration-powered generator based on a tuned-mass-damper (TMD) mechanism that is quite suitable for vibration-based SHM. The charging time of the TMD generator is shorter than that of conventional generators based on the impedance matching method, and the proposed TMD generator can harvest 16 times the amount of energy that a conventional generator can. The charging time of an SHM wireless transmitter is quantitatively formulated. We conduct wireless monitoring experiments to validate a wireless SHM system composed of a self-reliant SHM and a vibration-powered TMD generator.

  • The current study presents experimental and numerical results on the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on a cylindrical cup drawing of a cold rolled steel sheet(SPCC). An experimental apparatus, which can superimpose high frequency oscillations during deep drawing, was constructed by installing on the tooling ultrasonic vibration generators consisting of a piezoelectric transducer and a resonator. Conventional and vibration-assisted cylindrical deep drawing tests were conducted for various drawing ratios, and the limiting drawing ratios(LDR) for both methods were compared. To evaluate quantitatively the contribution from the ultrasonic vibrations to the reduction of friction between tools and material finite element analyses were conducted. Through a series of parametric analyses, the friction coefficients, which minimized the differences of punch load data between the experiments and simulations, were determined. The results show that the application of ultrasonic vibration effectively improves the LDR by reducing the friction between the tools and the material.
