The problem considered in this paper is about the collocation of sensor and actuator for the active control of sound and vibration. It is well-known that a point collocated sensor-actuator pair offers an unconditional stability with very high performance when it is used with a direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control, because the pair has strictly positive real (SPR) property. In order to utilize this SPR characteristics, a matched piezoelectric sensor and actuator pair is considered. but this pair suffers from the in-plane motion coupling problem with the out-of-plane motion due to the piezo sensor and actuator interaction. This coupling phnomenon limits the stability and performance of the matched pair with DVFBcontrol. As a new alternative, a point sensor and distributed piezoelectric actuator pair is also considered, which provides SPR property in all frequency range when the pair is implemented on a clamped-clapmed beam. The use of this sensor-actuator pair is highly expected for the applications to more practical active control of sound and vibration systems with the DVFB control strategy.
This paper represents a piezoelectric ultrasonic linear actuator with flexural vibration mode. The actuator is composed of two piezo ceramics, the elastic body, and the connecting tip. It is driven by the frictional force between the connecting tip and the linear motion guide. Unimorph actuators have flexural vibration. Its middle point is fixed so that suitable to the flexural vibration of $3/2\lambda$. These vibrations contribute to elliptical motion by mixed mode between longitudinal and transverse mode. It was generated when the ultrasonic electrical signals with 90 degree phase difference are applied to two ceramics. A linear movement can be easily obtained using the elliptical motion. The ATILA, FEM simulator has been used to design actuator and verify the kinetic and dynamic analysis. We used the ceramics of $20\times10\times1$ mm size and confirmed the flexural vibration of the $3/2\lambda$ at the 79 kHz through the scanning of 3D-vibrometer. The maximum velocity of actuator was 221 mm/sec and the thrust force of actuator was 2.7 N in 200Vp-p of additional voltage.

This paper analyzes the vibration characteristics of an optical pickup actuator, which has six wire-suspensions and is used in optical disc drives(ODDs). The vibration characteristics of the actuator is mathematically described by analyzing its beam configuration and motion condition confined to lateral and longitudinal directions of the beams. The accuracy of the vibration characteristics is proved by comparing mode frequencies with a finite element analysis. Finally, it is shown that mode frequencies and shapes can be modified by changing design parameters in mathematical expressions.

Optimization of the collocated piezoceramic sensor/actuator placement is investigated numerically and verified experimentally for vibration control of laminated composite plates. The finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite plates with the piezoceramic sensor/actuator. The structural damping index(SDI) is defined from the modal damping. It is chosen as the objective function for optimization. Weights for each vibrational mode are taken into account in the SDI calculation. The gradient method is used for the optimization. Optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is determined by maximizing tie SDI. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the optimum location of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator is dependent upon the outer layer fiber orientations of the plate, and location and size of the piezoceramic sensor/actuator.

In this paper, linear ultrasonic actuators are designed using two dimensional motions of a PMW-PT piezoelectric plate. By equalizing the natural frequencies of longitudinal and transverse vibration modes in the cantilever structure, the ultrasonic motion of the combined vibration modes are generated. We have designed two different PMN-PT actuators: one uses a tip attached on the edge of the actuator and it drives the object in the perpendicular direction of the tip. In other model, the actuator plate moves itself through stationary guides. Prototypes of the two models are manufactured and experiments results are compared to the theoretical and numerical results. The effects of structural characteristics and the friction force existing between the actuator tip and the moving object are considered. Experiments show the possibility of small size ultrasonic linear motors which can be applicable to small form factor information storage and phone camera actuators.
We report the new design of a miniature electromagnetic actuator for probe-based data storage with anti-vibration mechanism. The actuator consists of a media substrate, silicon frame, 2 pairs of magnets, a spacer, and a printed circuit board (PCB). The total area of the device is $11.2{\times}11.2 mm^2$ while the data recording area is $7.4{\times}7.4 mm^2$. A net momentum fee structure was included for high vibration resistance. The simulation shows that the lateral vibration can be reduced to below 100 nm for 1 G acceleration if the counter mass is adjusted with $1\%$ difference. The peak power for ${\pm}50 {\mu}m$ displacement is below 50 mW for a actuator with a resonance at 200 Hz.
In this paper, vibration reduction techniques of a voice coil motor (VCM) actuator are presented for AFM imaging system. The damping coefficient of the actuator driven by VCM with a flexure hinge is quite low and it cause the about 30dB peak amplitude response at the resonance frequency. To decrease this peak response, we design and apply elliptical band-stop filters to xy and z axis VCM actuator. Frequency response of each actuator with filter is measured to verify the effect of the filters. As a sensor, capacitive sensor is used. Vibration reduction rate of the xy actuator with the filter is also measured while real AFM scanning condition. As another method, closed loop control with the capacitive sensor is applied to the xy axis actuator to add an electrical damping effect and vibration reduction rate measured. These vibration reduction rates with each method are compared. In the case of z axis actuator, the frequency response of force (gap) control loop is measured. For comparison, the frequency response using a conventional PID controller is also obtained. Finally, the AFM image of a standard grid sample is measured with the designed controller to analyze the effect in the AFM imaging.
When a magnetostrictive material is exposed to a magnetic field, its geometry changes due to a magnetostrictive effect. The magnetostriction is analogous to the piezoeletricity. The displacement of the magnetostrictive material is proportional to the applied current while that of the piezoelectric material is proportional to the voltage. A magnetostrictive material generates large displacement and higher compressive force compared with a piezoeletric material. These advantages provide a good performance of a vibration isolation of a platform. In this work, it is applied to a driving actuator for vibration isolation of a platform. The properties of a magnetostrictive material are investigated in terms of hysteresis and displacement vs. applied current for a various preload. Modeling of the displacement of the vibration isolating actuator is performed as it behaves as a flow source. A sliding mode controller is designed to demonstrate the ability of the magnetostrictive actuator to reduce the vibration at the platform. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through experimental works. The experimental results of the vibration of the platform axe presented in terms of time response and frequency response.

An active control of the vibration transmitted by longitudinal load in flight control system is investigated numerically. The flight control system is modeled as a finite, thin shell cylinder with constant thickness. A vibration source is generated by exterior monopole source. Distributed piezoelectric actuator is used to control of the vibration. Thin shell theory is used to formulate the numerical models. The amplitude of vibration at discrete location and power transmission are minimized by analytical optimization method. Genetic algorithm is used as numerical optimization method to search optimal actuator position and size which amplitude of vibration is minimized.
Precision motion stages used in the manufacturing process of flat-panel displays have inevitably low settling performance due to their huge mass and bulky structures. In order to improve the settling performance, several methods of frame vibration compensation have been developed so far. These methods are used to cancel the vibration by imposing a counter force or modifying the resonance mode of the frame of the stage. To compensate the frame vibration, high force actuators are required. In this paper, a mighty voice coil actuator is proposed to generate the counter force against the frame vibration. The proposed voice coil actuator has an axis-symmetric rectangular structure to achieve a large force with simple and low cost fabrication. Also, the voice coil actuator allows radial clearance up to ${\pm}4mm$. Using an optimized design process and a magnetic circuit model, the power consumption is minimized while the required force is obtained. With a power of 322 W, the VCA has been designed to have a maximum force of 574 N with a force constant of 164 N/A. Experimental results verified the force constant of the fabricated voice coil actuator is well matched with the designed value.
