In this study, the flow path width (Gap Size), which is the flow path of fluid, was selected differently among various factors that determine the Ccontrol Force of MR damper, and the change of Control Force was confirmed accordingly. For this purpose, two MR dampers with a Gap Size of 1.0mm and 1.5mm were fabricated, respectively, and dynamic load experiments were conducted according to changes in applied current and vibration conditions The experimental results showed that the minimum Control Force was 3.2 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size, and the maximum Control Force was 2.3 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size. In addition, the increased width of the Control Force according to applied current was 34N for Gap Size 1.0mm, and 12.7N for Gap Size 1.5mm. As the gap Size increased, the overall Control Force and the increase in the Control Force by the applied current decreased. Next, the dynamic range, which is a performance evaluation index of the semi-active Control device, was 2.3 on average under 1.0mm condition and 2.8 on average under 1.5mm condition, confirming the possibility of utilization as a semi-active Control device.

The operational modal analysis (OMA) technique, which extracts the modal parameters of a structural system using ambient vibrations, has been actively developed as a field of structural health monitoring of cable-supported bridges. In this paper, the short and long-term modal parameters of a cable-stayed bridge were evaluated using the acceleration data obtained from the two ambient vibration tests (AVTs) and three years of continuous measurements. A total of 27 vertical modes and 1 lateral mode in the range 0.1 ~ 2.5 Hz were extracted from the high-resolution AVTs which were conducted in the 6th and 19th years after its completion. Existing OMA methods such as Peak-Picking (PP), Eigensystem Realization Algorithm with Data Correlation (ERADC), Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) and Time Domain Decomposition (TDD) were applied for modal parameters extraction, and it was confirmed that there was no significant difference between the applied methods. From the correlation analysis between long-term natural frequencies and environmental factors, it was confirmed that temperature change is the dominant factor influencing natural frequency fluctuations. It was revealed that the decreased natural frequencies of the bridge were not due to changes in structural performance and integrity, but to the environmental effects caused by the temperature difference between the two AVTs. In addition, when the TDD technique is applied, the accuracy of extracted mode shapes is improved by adding a proposed algorithm that normalizes the sequence so that the autocorrelations at zero lag equal 1.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the stiffness reduction and damping ratio of reinforced concrete hollow slabs and to analyze their performance, and to study the effect of the damping effect of hollow bodies and the stiffness reduction on the serviceability of slabs. Method: Test specimen was made in a size of 0.6m*0.21m*3.6m to evaluate the vibration effect of the slab, and the hollow ratio was set in six steps from 0.0% to 30% to measure the change in rigidity and damping according to the change in the hollow ratio. Result: As the hollow ratio increases, rigidity decreases and the natural frequency decreases, but as the mass decreases, the natural frequency increases gradually. Since energy is hardly dissipated up to the hollow ratio of 20%, the hollow ratio should be reduced by 30%. Conclusion: It was found that the bending strength degradation of the slab with a hollow ratio of about 30% is minimized, but an appropriate natural frequency can be maintained, and a certain damping effect can be obtained.

South Korea has recently witnessed an increasing number of seismic events, leading to a surge in studies focusing on seismic earth pressures, as well as the attributes of geological layers and ground where foundations are established. Consequently, earthquake-resistant design has become imperative to ensure the safety of subterranean structures. The slurry wall method, due to its superior wall rigidity, excellent water resistance, and minimal noise and vibration, is often employed in constructing high-rise buildings in urban areas. However, given the separation between panels that constitute the wall, slurry walls possess limited resistance to seismic loads in the longitudinal direction. As a solution, several studies have probed into the possibility of interconnecting slurry wall panels to augment their seismic performance. In this research, we developed and evaluated a method for linking slurry wall panels using mechanical joints, including concrete-confined steel pipes and headed bars, through mock-up tests. We also assessed the constructability of the suggested method and compared it with other analogous methods. Any challenges identified during the mock-up test were discussed to guide future research in resolving them. The results of this study aid in enhancing the seismic performance of slurry walls through the development of an interconnected panel method. Further research can build on these findings to address the identified issues and improve the efficacy and reliability of the proposed method.

The monitoring of environmental information (e.g. noise, dust, vibration, temperature, humidity) is crucial to the safe and sustainable operation of a construction site. However, commercial sensors exhibit certain drawbacks when applied on-site. First, the installation cost is prohibitively high. Second, these sensors have been engineered without considering the rugged and harsh conditions of a construction site, resulting in error-prone sensing. Third, construction sites are compelled to allocate additional resources in terms of manpower, expenses, and physical spaces to accommodate individual sensors. This research developed an integrated sensing module to measure the environmental information in construction site. The sensing module slashes the installation cost to 3.3%, is robust enough to harsh and outdoor sites, and consolidates multiple sensors into a single unit. The sensing module also supports GPS, LTE, and real-time sensing. The evaluation showed remarkable results including 97.5% accuracy and 99.9% precision in noise measurement, an 89.7% accuracy in dust measurement, and a 93.5% reliability in data transmission. This research empowers the collection of substantial volumes and high-quality environmental data from construction sites, providing invaluable support to decision-making process. These encompass objective regulatory compliance checking, simulations of environmental data dispersion, and the development of environmental mitigation strategies.

The urban railway sleeper floating track(STEDEF) is a structure that structurally separates the sleepers and the concrete bed using sleeper boots and resilience pads to reduce vibration transmitted to the concrete bed. Recently, the resilience pads of sleeper floating tracks that have been in use for more than 20 years are deteriorating. Accordingly, in order to evaluate the performance of the resilience pad, a static spring stiffness test is being performed after extracting the resilience pad. This evaluation technique is performed after replacing the resilience pad in use. However, the track natural frequency can change depending on the resilience pad spring stiffness and the uplift and subsidence of the concrete bed. In this study, modal testing technique was used to evaluate the track natural frequency. For this purpose, the sleeper boots material, resilience pad spring stiffness, and track natural frequency according to concrete bed uplift and subsidence were measured using modal tests at a laboratory scale. It was analyzed that the natural frequency of the sleeper floating track was directly affected by changes in the spring stiffness of the resilience pad. In addition, the change in natural frequency due to the uplift and subsidence of the concrete bed was also found to be large. Therefore, it is believed that the modal test technique presented in this study can be used to evaluate the resilience pad deterioration and voided sleepers.

Normally in order to build a semi-active control system equipped with MR damper, the dynamic modeling of the damper is required to numerically predict its dynamic damping force and also its behavioral characteristics. For the dynamic modeling of the MR damper, this paper attempts to predict and evaluate its dynamic behavior by applying specifically both a power model and a Bingham model. Dynamic loading tests were performed on the squeeze type of damper specially designed for this research, and force-displacement hysteresis loops confirmed the effectiveness of the damper as a semi-active control device. In the meantime, in order to evaluate the effectiveness of each model applied, the model parameter for each model was identified. On the basis of the parameter, we derived the error ratio of the force-velocity relationship curve and the dynamic damping force, which was contrasted and compared with the experimental results of the squeeze type of damper. Finally, the squeeze type of MR damper developed in this research was proved to be valid as a semi-active control device, and also the evaluation of the two dynamic models showed they were working fine so that they were likely to be easily utilized to numerically predict the dynamic characteristics of any dampers with MR fluid as well as the squeeze type of MR damper.
Recently, there have been various lifeline installations constructed in the underground space of urban area due to the effective use of land. For newly installed lifelines or the management of the installed lifelines, many construction activities of excavation and backfilling are observed. Around these area, there are possibilities of collapse or excessive settlement due to the leaking of the pipe or unsatisfactory compaction of backfill material. Besides, construction costs can be saved since the on-site soils are used. The application of this liquidity filling material is not only to the lifeline installation but also to underpin the foundation under the vibrating machinery. On the evaluation of the applicability of this method to this circumstance, the strength should be investigated against the static load from the machine load as well as the vibration load from the activation of the machine. In this study, the applicability of the liquidity fill material on the foundation under the vibrating machinery is assessed via uniaxial compression and resonant column tests. The liquidity filling material consisting of the on-site soils with loess and kaolinite are tested to investigate the static and dynamic characteristics. Furthermore, the applicability of the reclaimed ash categorized as an industrial waste is evaluated for the recycle of the waste to the construction materials. The experimental results show that the shear modulus and 7 day uniaxial strength of the liquidity filling material mixed with reclaimed ash show higher than those with the on-site soils. However, the damping ratio does not show any tendency on the mixed materials.

Vocal nodules and polyps are much more frequent in singers, public speakers, teachers and actors. Voice trauma and voice misuse, at times associated with mild inflammatory reaction, appear to be important in their etiology. It is generally agreed that vocal cord nodules and polyps are inflammatory in nature and they arise in the subepithelial layer of loose connective tissue of the vocal cord. Since the junction of anterior and middle thirds of the membranous cord and has the greatest amplitude of vibration. This is the site of predilection for vocal cord nodules. The author performed laryngomicrosurgery for 70 cases of vocal nodules and polyps at Ewha Womans University Hospital during the period of 5 years. The result obtained were as follows ; 1) Surgical excision is not necessarily the best approach because vocal nodules in the early stages will resolve with the simplest voice therapy. 2) In children, surgery is rarely indicated because most nodules in children regress during adolescence. 3) For patients who use their voices professionally, voice therapy is indicated for three months. 4) If after three month of conservative treatment the cord lesion does not improve and the patient it still dissatisfied with his voice, laryngomicrosurgery can then be considered. 5) The small cuffed endotracheal tube in the interarytenoid space helps to keep the cords immobile and in an abducted position. 6) Removal of the nodule shoule be started by gentle retraction posteriorly and as soon as a tear appears anterior to the nodule. 7) On occasion it is preferable to start the dissection with a siccle knife while the nodule is held on the stretch. 8) Voice rest should be maintained for a week following which the free edges of the cords are usually healed.
