Clinical and Clinicopathological Findings of Naturally Occurring Hyperadrenocorticism in Dogs: A Retrospective Study of 17 Cases

  • A retrospective study of 17 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) was performed to evaluate the clinical and clinicopathological outcomes in dogs with pituitary-dependent HAC or adrenal gland-dependent HAC. Sixteen dogs were monitored at day 10, 30 and 90 then every 3 month after first presentation. In each examination, physical examination and ACTH stimulation test and client questionnaire were performed. In 17 cases, eight dogs were successfully treated with mitotane therapy (median dose 16.7 mg/kg; range 5.3 to 50 mg/kg, SID); another one dog showed favorable response, but the clients declined to further treatment before the full control of the disease had been achieved; four dogs showed poor response to treatment. One dog was euthanized due to septicemia. These results showed canine HAC can be medically managed successfully without side effects at the doses used in this study.

면역매계성 혈액장애를 가진 소동물에서 귀비탕의 사용 (The Use of Gui-Pi-Tang in Small Animals with Immune-Mediated Blood Disorders)

  • 면역 매개 용혈성 빈혈(IMHA)은 소동물의 빈혈을 일으키는 가장 흔한 원인 중의 하나이고, 면역매계 혈소판 감소증(IMT) 또한 소동물에 영향을 줄 수 있는 면역관련 질환이다. 스테이드제나 다른 면역억제제를 이용한 면역억압이 IMHA와 IMT의 일차적인 치료법이다. 그러나 적절한 약물의 적용에도 불구하고, 몇몇 동물은 치료에 반응이 없어 다른 면역억제제나 대체의학적인 치료가 필요하다. IMHA로 진단 된 8살의 중성화한 샴 고양이와 IMT로 진단된 8살의 킹챨스 스파니엘이 전통수의학진료를 위해 동물병원에 의뢰되었다. 두 동물 모두 스테로이드제나 다른 면역억제제에 반응이 없었다. 그래서 전통한약요법으로 귀비탕을 두 동물에게 적용하였다. 귀비탕 적용 한달 후 고양이의 농축적 혈구용적과 개의 혈소판 수치에 현저한 변화가 나타나기 시작하였다. 귀비탕을 먹이기 시작한 후 4개월 후에도 고양이의 농축 적혈구 용적이 정상으로 유지되었으며, 18개월 후에 측정한 개의 혈소판 수 또한 정상으로 유지되었다. 이 증례로부터 면역혈액질환이 있는 소동물에 있어 귀비탕은 대체요법으로 사용될 수 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.

A survey of the use of veterinary anesthetics in Korea

  • This study was conducted to investigate actual conditions associated with veterinary anesthetic drug use in Korea, and to obtain responses from Korean veterinarians and researchers pertaining to the use of anesthetic drugs. To accomplish this, a nationwide survey was issued to veterinarians working at animal hospitals and to researchers in the Korean Association for Laboratory Animal Science (KALAS). A self-administered questionnaire-based survey was then conducted in which respondents were asked questions about actual conditions associated with the use of animal anesthetic drugs. The survey revealed that the distribution and management of animal medicines in Korea was quite vulnerable to misuse or abuse due to a variety of factors. Therefore, a relevant regulatory system should be strictly enforced to protect vulnerable individuals from abuse or misuse.

요크셔테리어에서 발생한 난소 유두모양샘암종 (Ovarian Papillary Adenocarcinoma in a Yorkshire Terrier Dog)

  • 10년령의 중성화되지 않은 암컷 요크셔테리어가 심한 복부확장과 출혈성 삼출물에 대한 평가를 위해 내원하였다. 복부 방사선과 초음파 검사상에서 삼출물과 무에코의 낭성 구성물 들을 지닌 복강 내 종괴가 확인되었다. 복수의 세포검사에서 공포화된 세포질을 지닌 종양성 외피 세포들과 현저한 핵들이 관찰되었다. 자기공명영상에서는 잘 분획되고, 이질성의 큰 종괴가 복강 내를 채우고 있었다. 부검 상에서는 우측 난소로부터 유래한 큰 종괴가 관찰되었다. 조직병리학적 검사에서는 종양성 외피세포들로 이루어진 유두모양 구조들로 종괴가 구성되어있는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 환견은 임상 및 조직병리학적 소견들에 근거하여 유두모양의 악성 난소 샘암종으로 최종 진단되었다.

In-vitro meat: a promising solution for sustainability of meat sector

  • The in-vitro meat is a novel concept in food biotechnology comprising field of tissue engineering and cellular agriculture. It involves production of edible biomass by in-vitro culture of stem cells harvested from the muscle of live animals by self-organizing or scaffolding methodology. It is considered as efficient, environmental friendly, better ensuring public safety and nutritional security, as well as ethical way of producing meat. Source of stem cells, media ingredients, supply of large size bioreactors, skilled manpower, sanitary requirements, production of products with similar sensory and textural attributes as of conventional meat, consumer acceptance, and proper set up of regulatory framework are challenges faced in commercialization and consumer acceptance of in-vitro meat. To realize any perceivable change in various socio-economic and environmental spheres, the technology should be commercialized and should be cost-effective as conventional meat and widely accepted among consumers. The new challenges of increasing demand of meat with the increasing population could be fulfill by the establishment of in-vitro meat production at large scale and its popularization. The adoption of in-vitro meat production at an industrial scale will lead to self-sufficiency in the developed world.

Evaluation of bioequivalence of two enrofloxacin formulations after intramuscular administration in goats

  • The present study was planned to evaluate the bioequivalence of two commercial formulations of enrofloxacin, which have been marketed as 10% injectable solution after intramuscular administration at a single dose of 2.5 mg/kg body weight to 12 clinically healthy goats The study was carried out on the basis of crossover design. The two formulations were: Baytril as a reference product and Spectrama Vet as a test product. The plasma concentrations of enrofloxacin were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detector. The pharmacokinetics of that data was performed using non-compartmental analysis. The maximum plasma concentration ($C_{max}$), time to reach peak concentration ($T_{max}$), area under concentration-time curve (AUC), elimination half-life ($t_{0.5el}$) were 1.14 and $1.05{\mu}g/mL$, 0.79 and 0.83 h, 5.70 and $5.79{\mu}g.h/mL$, 5.19 and 5.39 h for Baytril and Spectrama Vet, respectively. The 90% confidence interval for the mean ratio of $T_{max}$, $C_{max}$ and AUC were 94.72-116.2, 87.88-97.16 and 86.44-118.72%, respectively. These values falls within the European Medicines Agency bioequivalence acceptance range of 80-125% for both $T_{max}$ and AUC and between 75-133% for $C_{max}$. In conclusion, Spectrama-Vet is bioequivalent to Baytril and both products can be used as interchangeable drug in veterinary medicine practice.

Biological Parameters of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) Fed on Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle

  • In order to determine the effect of various hosts on feeding performance of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, we used 3 mammalian species as hosts, cattle (Qinchuan), sheep (Tan), and rabbits (Japanese white rabbit) for infesting ticks. Five hundreds of R. microplus larvae were exposed to each animal (3 animals/host species). Tick recoveries were 11.0%, 0.47%, and 5.5% from cattle, sheep, and rabbits, respectively. The averages of tick feeding periods were not significantly different on cattle, sheep, and rabbits, 28.8, 25.3, and 26.7 days, respectively. The average weights of individual engorged female from cattle, sheep, and rabbits were 312.5, 219.1, and 130.2 mg, respectively and those of egg mass weights each to 85.0, 96.6, and 17.8 mg. The highest egg hatching rate was in the ticks from cattle (96.0%), followed by those from rabbits (83.0%) and sheep (19.2%). These data suggest that rabbits could be as an alternative host to cultivate R. microplus for evaluating vaccines and chemical and biological medicines against the tick in the laboratory, although the biological parameters of ticks were less than those from cattle.

개 안면신경마비에 대한 오약순기산의 치료효과 (Therapeutic Effect of Oyaksungisan in Dogs with Facial Nerve Paralysis)

  • 한약제는 사람의 많은 질병의 치료를 위하여 사용되어 왔으나, 개 안면신경마비에 대한 한약제의 치료 효과는 현재까지 검토된 바 없다. 개 안면신경마비에 대한 오약순기산의 치료 효과를 조사하였다. 인공적으로 안면신경마비를 유발한 총 10두 대조군(5두)과 한약제 치료군(5두,오약순기산 치료군)으로 나누어 공시하였다. 대조군은 아무런 처치를 하지 않았으며,오약순기산 치료군은 1일 2회, 총 2주간 오약순기산(50 mg/kg)을 경구 투여하였다. 오약순기산 치료군의 임상 지표는 대조군에 비하여 14일(p<0.05)에 유의성 있는 개선을 보였다. 오약순기산 치료군의 혈청 CK 활성 변화는 대조군에 비하여 낮은 경향을 나타냈지만 유의성은 인정되지 않았다. 결론적으로, 오약순기산은 개 안면신경마비 치료에 유효한 것으로 판단되었다.

Quatification of Flavonoid Contents in Chungsimyeonja-tang, a Multi-Herbal Decoction, and Its Protective Effect against Cisplatin-induced Nephrotoxicity

  • Chungsimyeonja-tang (CSYJT) is an herbal decoction that consists with 12 herbal medicines. CSYJT has been shown to have anti-stress, anti-allergic and anti-oxidant effects. The aim of this study was to determine flavonoid contents in CSYJT and evaluate its protective effect against cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity using both in vitro (porcine renal epithelial cell; PK15 cell) and in vivo (Sprague Dawley rat) experiments. In the present study, thee mean contents of baicalin, wogonoside and baicalein in CSYJT were 14.65, 5.27 and 0.02 mg/g, respectively. The CSYJT extract treatment attenuated the following alteration in porcine renal epithelial (PK15) cell: the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), the glutathione depletion and the increase in p53 expression induced by cisplatin treatment. In the in vivo study, rats were orally treated with CSYJT extract once a day for 28 days. Five days before the last treatment, cisplatin (5 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally injected to induce acute renal failure. Increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) levels after cisplatin treatment were ameliorated by pretreatment of CSYJT extract. In addition, lipid peroxidation was decreased and antioxidant enzyme (glutathione) was recovered in CSYJT pretreated kidney tissue. In histopathological examination, CSYJT pretreated group showed ameliorated pathological alteration after cisplatin injection with decreased apoptosis. Taken together, pretreatment of CSYJT could ameliorate cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.

Spontaneously Occurring Chemodectoma in a Yorkshire Terrier Dog

  • A 7-year-old, intact female Yorkshire terrier dog was presented for coughing, anorexia, chest pain and dyspnea. Right lateral thoracic radiograph demonstrated a large mass shape on the heart base with decreased cardiac silhouette and severe right deviation of the trachea with the heart shifted to the left thoracic wall was observed on the ventrodorsal thoracic projection. Echocardiographic examination revealed a large rounded mass compressing left atrium around the heart base without signs of pericardial effusion. On computed tomographic (CT) findings, sagittal CT images depicted the possibility of cranial vena caval invasion and heart base involvement of the mass associated with biatrial compression. Dorsal CT image revealed the right deviation of trachea due to the heart base mass and markedly shrunk lung space was detected on the transverse CT image. Because the dog suddenly had died during the recovery from anesthesia after finishing CT scan, necropsy was performed. On gross findings, a large and lobulated mass was located at the base of the heart. A poorly-demarcated, infiltrative, multilobulated tumor composed of polyhedral cells in solid cellular sheets was confirmed based on histopathologic examination. This dog was diagnosed as a chemodectoma. This case report describes the clinical findings, diagnostic consistency of thoracic radiography, echocardiography and CT, and histopathologic confirmation in a spontaneously occurring chemodectoma with a Yorkshire terrier dog.
